For many years, here on the Mohican Board, I heard of this film ... seemingly a sort of cult-classic among Daniel Day-Lewis fans.
Partly because it stars DDL, and partly because it was newly released on DVD, I bought it to see what the fuss was all about ...
Well .. it's a long movie - on 2 discs - and I've only watched part 1 so far. The movie also stars Juliette Binoche & Lena Olin - 2 of the most gorgeous women ever to be paired in the same film! Never again will I look at a woman with a hat on in quite the same light!!!!  I'll tell you that! Most erotic film I have ever seen. Very weird,too ... but, I gotta admit, I'm hooked. As I await the time to watch the 2nd part, I cannot get a feel as to whether this movie will have a happy ending or a tragic one ... it appears capable of going either way.
So, DDL die-hards ... tell me again what you think of this movie [but don't give away the ending, please!!!] ...

| I thought it was an excellent movie, Rich -- weird, as you point out, maybe because it doesn't have the usual straightforward kind of plot that we're used to, but compelling for the same reason, as you have no idea what to expect; also very intelligent, beautifully filmed (no pun intended, though you're right about Juliette and Lena), lots of offbeat humor. Possibly my least favorite DDL role, only because I prefer heroes to bad boys (though he does evolve somewhat). It's a movie that might have more of an impact on those of us old enough to remember the phrase "Prague Spring" -- the scene of the Russian tanks coming down that narrow road outside the apartment building was quite chilling. And as for those lovely ladies, well, Rich, if you haven't gotten to the part where Juliette photographs Lena, you ain't seen nothin' yet! |

I loved it, myself. Intensely erotic, thoughtful, beautiful
cinematography. I won't even go near the ending -- all I will
say that it's totally unexpected and very moving. I though Lena
Olin was fantastic -- when I grow up I want to be just like her!
*LOL* Juliette and DD-L were terrific as well. I was so happy
to see that this has been re-released, and I'm sending in my
order as soon as payday comes around. I haven't seen it in years,
and I'm really looking forward to it.

You just so keep hoping Tomas will "straighten up and fly right", but..... Loved the movie, loved the ending and I actually liked Daniel in it, a bit scrawny though. I thought Juliette Binoche was most beautiful though in Chocolat and I am STILL trying to get up the nerve to cut my hair like hers (LORD - I sound like a teenager)!!!
Yes - this is a must-have on DVD I think also!

Doc-y Poo, Ya got that right! I think I would try being a cobbler before resorting to his CURRENT hair style.
THE GOOD NEWS IS.... Daniel is slated to be working on a new film called There Will Be Blood based on the Upton Sinclair novel OIL! and directed by PT Anderson which should begin filming in May in Texas and Mexico.

Must've had more of a feel than I thought, for the ending was neither all happy nor all tragic ... quite a movie. Very different - as you say Bookworm - in the telling. Very good! |

| The late great Marcia once referred to this film as "Incredible Longness of Movie." Have to admit that was the way I felt when I first saw it. Later viewings after I "discovered" DDL showed me what a really fine film it is, you just have to have the endurance and the patience. Not a film I'd watch over and over again, but one I'm glad to have seen. If you haven't read the Kundera book, and you enjoy metaphysics and literature that's a little cerebral, I highly recommend it. |

I enjoyed the movie immensely, the second half more than the first. The ending really caught me by surprise.
My least favorite DDL role is in Eversmile, NJ. I can't even sit all the way through that movie. It's his try at comedy, and in my opinion, he fails miserably. Has anyone seen it? Opinions?

| You're right, Chris, that IS his worst role (Stars and Bars was pretty bad, too). I don't think it's his fault as much as it is the fact that in both cases the directors didn't decide exactly what they wanted their movies to be, so they sort of go off in all directions. |

Hi Bookworm,
I also agree about Stars and Bars, but thought I shouldn't put too much anti-DDL in one note. Actually, I am a huge DDL fan. I can't wait to see the new movie. Has anyone seen Jack and Rose? I missed it in the theater and haven't seen the DVD offered anywhere.
