Anybody going this weekend? 3rd Battalion Pennsylvania, The Augusta Regiment, Burd's Co'y will be there wit 17 soldiers and Camp Followers. If you are there, playing or watching, look for us. Our camp will have 18" square dark green flags with a gold III on it at each corner, and the red ensign and Company colours in front of my tent. Stop by and say "Hi!"

This is one event I would like to make. I have heard nothing but good things about it. It's just a really long trip for me. So, maybe one day. |

We hope to be there next year, because we alternate between Niagara and Ti every year as our "New York Trip". That way, Graham's Coy. will be there in 2008 for the 250th, with our brother 42nd RHR Units from New England and the Great Lakes area.

Duncan, me lad! You were sorely missed at Cook Forest. McMillan had to take care of your Port ration! How is Lady Munro's foot? |

Hi Kurt,
I am sure we will cross paths at some point. I will be certain to seek you out!
I was pleased to have Schroth's represented at Cook Forest, and I am sure Capt. Schroth and the others had a good time. I hope you can come next year! |

Hi Seamus,
Sorry I could not make it to Cook's, it sounds like everything went fantastic as usual. I will be at Braddock's in July, hopefully we can finally share some Port then. Lady Munro is 'crutch-bound' for the next couple of weeks, and is scheduled for P/T after that. She sends her regrets for getting to see her favorite officer, since she originally planned to bring all kinds of goodies for you to enjoy with the Port.

Aye, Duncan, I will have a fresh supply at Braddock's in July, and look forward to sharing it with you. Hopefully, the lovely Lady will be able join us there. Give her my love and my7 best wishes for a speedy recovery.

Will there be a big turnout for Braddock's? I haven't seen any numbers. Nor have I heard that a lot were going. They extended the deadline for registration which may mean they are short of people. |

Fitz,
I saw George Reilly, one of the planners at Cook Forest and asked that very question. He said they were pleased with returns so far, but gave no numbers, saying he didn't know since it was someone else's job, but he had heard they were good. I have reservations.............we'll see. I think they extended it because it was an unrealistic deadline originally.
We'll let you know! |

I registered on March 23, so I am going regardless of the numbers. I have been thinking about swinging by Pittsburg and seeing the Clash of Empires exhibit. I ordered the book that goes with it. It's got some interesting things. One is the capitulation that Washington signed at Fort Necessity. It is also signed by Capt. James Mackay, the commander of the SC Independent Company. His signature is to the left and slightly above Washington's, so maybe he signed first. It also has Langlade's commission and his coat, but the coat is from his time as an British Indian Agent. |

Great plan! You will absolutely love the exhibit! I have been there. You will not be able to take photos or make sketches of anything, however. There are signs posted that say you cannot even take pen and paper in! Gurds are everywhere and are very attentive.
I will see you at OBV!! |

Well, after gathering all of the courage I could muster (if you will pardon the pun ), I made a spur-of-the-moment decision and attended the Grand Encampment! I had been wanting to see this event for several years now and just never made it. I really felt as though I needed a little get-away, after all that has been going on in my life over the past 8 months, and it was, indeed, just what the doctor ordered!
No, I didn't get to camp, unfortunately -- had to stay at the Super 8 and was very fortunate to be able to take advantage of a last minute cancellation -- but I did wear my "real clothes" on both days. So I was able to nearly completely Time Travel back to the French & Indian War. And it was... er... Grand!
I met up with Seamus and his men, briefly, a couple of times, was introduced to our Kurt (yes, it was great to meet you too, Kurt!), did some 18th century shopping, watched battles, toured the Fort, attended Divine Sunday Service, did more shopping, sat in the shade and people-watched, and just about wore out my fan trying to keep cool.
On my way home the following Monday, I stopped at Saratoga Battlefield National Historic Site. That was my first visit there and I was quite impressed. I thought the lady ranger/employee was going to slobber all over me when she found out that my 4th great-grandfather fought there with his regiment, Scammel's New Hampshire. They were smack in the thick of the fighting at Bemis Heights, the day Simon Fraser was killed. Great place that is well worth visiting.
All in all... a wonderful 4-day getaway! |

Ah, yesssssssss...........WW, it was so nice to have youthere! I knew you'd have a wonderful time! I enjoyed meeting your brother, too. I trust he also had a grand time! It certainly was hot, for sure, but that seems to be normal for Ti. Been there, too, when it was solid mud. BUT!! No matter what the weather is like, Ti is a fascinating magical place, and I never tire of being there.
I'm so glad you came, and I hope you will do so again! Gonna come see us at Old Mill Village in August? It's real close to home! |

Thank you, Seamus! You are very kind. Yes, Terry enjoyed it very much, as well, although he suffers greatly from the heat and dampness of the air.
I hope to be able to visit you at Old Mill Village. That is another small, but very nice, event. We will see what is happening by then.
BTW, I spoke with our mutual friend Adiondak last evening. When I told him of my journey to Fort Ti, his eyes popped nearly from his head as he exclaimed, "You drove all the way up there? You are braver than I!" Although he has attended in years past, I feel that his advancing age and dislike for driving after darkness sets in keeps him a little closer to home.
And you, Sir... will I see you at Newtown this year? It will be a much smaller event than last year, but still a nice one. Hope you can join us.

In regard to the numbers of reenactors expected at "Drums in the Forest" held at Old Bedford Village later this month, the Corporal of my British unit gets updates regularly, and the last count was over 500 and still counting. That doesn't sound too bad to me. I'm lucky this year because Bedford is only about an hour away from me (and others in the Pittsburgh area). I'm really looking forward to it, but I've been told that this time I HAVE TO COOK! I'm usually the only female in the camp, and I hate cooking at events, though I will gladly sew on buttons, mend shirts, etc., whenever asked. I also have to Always clean off the table before the evening meals because it's usually disgusting after the guys get through with all the stuff they do, like cleaning muskets, snacking, spilling beer, etc. Of course, they only spill beer when they're at events that allow its consumption.
I attended the F & I event at Fort Niagara (right on Lake Ontario), and it was a beutiful weekend! There are always a ton of French Canadians there, speaking French and partying in the castle, which lends a big dose of reality to the event, and the BEST 18th c. sutlers anywhere in the country! I have always wanted to attend Ticonderoga, then wend my way across the Adirondacks during the week on my way to Niagara. I call it the Ti-Ni-Loop, and every time I"ve planned to do it, something has happened to make it not happen. But some day it WILL happen! |

Rose,
I will be at OBV, too. I think there will be several others, such as Sarge, Fitz, Ens. McMillan, and maybe more. Maybe we should have a mini-Mohicanland Get-together?
Sounds to me like your unit is taking advantage of you! We have duty rosters, posted bt the Sjt. We have cooks, cleanup, wood/water gatherers, and camp cleanup is everyone's responsibility. Duty Rosters are posted daily, duties rotated by the meal, and no one is stuck with a distasteful duty for the whole event. It seems to work well for us, and fellas who don't ordinarily cook at home have learned it ain't all that bad. We team newbies with the experienced. Our ladies aren't "stuck in the kitchen", either! |

Seamus, The Mini-Mohican-Get-Together sounds great! I already know The Sarge and the Ensign, since they have camped nearby my 60th before, but I'd love to meet more!
The cooking detail is not as bad as it sounds! As a rule, there is usually only one meal — Saturday Evening — that is cooked for the group. The rest of the time we have cheese, hard sausage, fruit, bread, etc., and whatever we want to bring otherwise for ourselves or to share. The Corporal is a PERFECT Corporal, and barks out his orders like the real thing. Strangely enough, nobody complains if they have to go get buckets of water or fill all the canteens. They just do it. He has a commanding voice. But we love him anyway.
The cooking I will have to do involves slicing potatoes and kielbasa into the bake oven (not called a Dutch oven until the early 1900s), adding some water, and tending to it while it cooks. There will also be saurkraut (the Corporal is German) from a can or bag and eaten at room... er, I mean camp temperature (or chilled, depending). If there are Indians about, they will eat any leftovers and usually wash out the bake oven as well. They have dubbed me the all-purpouse wench, since I'm usually the only one, but I had to change it to the MULTI-purpose wench, because there are some things I will not do.
See you at Bedford! I'll try to bring something special for our Mohican Mini-Soiree.

...also, the cleaning of the camp table is Not something that I'm ordered to do at all. Those guys will eat at the table no matter what it looks like, and I can't stand the sight of it. Uck! So I just get out my basin, soap and linen rags and scrub it down really well before the food is ready. At one point, the Corporal suggested that it was my job to clean all the muskets, and that didn't NOT go over well. First of all, NO! |
