From a beautiful Blue Ridge sunrise, at Gathering 2000, to posting here on the Mohican Board, Dana Steckler, Dana S., our beloved WooHoo Girl, exuded spark & spunk ... life. She always brought good-natured wit and friendship to this place. I never heard a bad word said about her. She was interesting & interested. Through this Board, and the many fine people she met here, she was sucked in to the world of reenacting and finger-weaving. She was a true joy to be around here in Mohicanland.

She has been ill for quite some time ... many of you here now never got to experience the exuberance this woman brought to the table. She was special.

She is gone now. Just 5 years ago, nearly to the day, she was alive & bringing life to all around her at the Third Mohican Gathering. It is hard to believe that she is not with us any longer ... very hard.

Dana had two boys. Please remember to keep Kyle [18] and Steven [15] in your thoughts and prayers.

Memorial contributions can be made to Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure (breast cancer research and support) www.komen.org

Dana lived in Indiana. If any of you in the area would like to be at Memorial Services for her, you may contact Jayne for that info.

This is a sad day ...

I never knew Dana, outside of her e-personality, but she seemed to me to be a person who was kind, thoughtful and full of life. She also was one never to face adversity lying-down. Unlike Scott Bubar, I never really had much interaction with her, but I will still miss her presence here, just as much. Take care Dana, and remember that you now have friends at your destination, as well as at your departure point. I know that Scott will give her a bonny Mohicanland-style welcome...

I am so very, very sorry to learn of this. I didn't know Dana at all, but I wish I had. She sounds like such a lovely person. Too young, much too young...

Dana, I hope that my Gary is walking beside you with his arm around your shoulder to welcome you into Heaven.

Rich,
I am so sorry to hear about Dana. Unfortunately, I never had the pleasure of meeting Dana or even posting a message to her, but I have only heard good things about her. I know that she will be greatly missed!!! I will keep her family and friends in my prayers.

I knew Dana well. We joined the board around the same time, we shared emails before our first gathering, we were both first timers at Gathering 2000, we shared a cabin together with Marcia and Kate, we shared the infamous sleeping-bag-for-three with Ilse, and I had the complete pleasure of being a guest in her home the following year.

Dana looked at the whole world with wide-eyed wonder. Everything she saw, and everyone she met was interesting and special to her, and it was impossible for that not to rub off on you when you were with her. She was a humble, modest, unspoiled, beautiful woman. She had no idea how totally gorgeous she was - inside and out. Like Rich, I can't imagine anyone ever having a bad word to say about her.

There aren't really enough words to do Dana justice and I will miss her presence on this earth so much - it just became a duller place without her. I fancy there is an awful lot of "woooooo-hoooooing" in Heaven about now!

But from her, I will take more than one valuable lessons for how to live and enjoy life for the rest of MY life. The most important of which was learned amongst fits of giggles in a tiny cabin in the middle of North Carolina five years ago, when Dana, Ilse and I came to this profound conclusion....

"Life is too short for blow-drying!!"

Rest in peace, my humble friend - I was truly blessed to have known you.

From your devoted friend,

HM

This is just devastating news. I knew she was very ill, but she
was fighting right up to the end. My prayers go out to her family
and her good friends. Thanks for your post, Adele -- life is
indeed too short for blow-drying, and a lot of other stuff that
we drag around with us every day that we somehow become convinced
is "important."

Rich, thanks so much for posting those pictures and for your nice post. And you too, Adele - we have certainly lost a vibrant, contagiously curious and beautiful MohicanLand soul!

It has just broken my heart to know our Dana is gone! I am so, so sad!I was able to visit with her for a brief time in April and will always treasure being able to spend more time with her. One could never spend enough time around Dana!!! There was just something about her that drew you into her, into her spirit. When she would talk about her "curiosity du jour", I would always be amazed (and envious I must admit) of the way her mind worked. There are people we cross paths with in this life that seem to be "old souls" - seem to know their path and how best to move through this life. Dana was NOT one of those people. It seemed to me, each day she would be seeking some new knowledge, some new passion that would better define who Dana was, YEP, she was definitely a seeker!

After the 2000 Gathering, Dana wrote the ultimate Post-Gathering reflection she titled, "I Remember..." and she proceeded to mention a brief remembrance of each person she had met, never mentioning a single name. We each knew which memory we were though. I looked for this post recently and sadly, was not able to find it. This was also during the time of the famous Gathering Website Hacking, so perhaps it is lost

So anyway, for DANA, I remember...

Your beautiful smile!
Your insatiable quest for knowledge and experiences!
Your hilarious descriptions of you working as a painter with "all those guys!"
Your concern and love for your boys!
Your precious "Indiana" accent!
How you shyed from hugs, but later learned you can't see a MohicanLand friend and NOT get hugged!
Your energy - which still shined through even during some dark and painful times!
WOOOOOOHOOOOOOO!

Dana didn't want to talk about leaving this world. Some, including me, thought this might be a bit naive or that she was in denial, but I have just today realized...that Dana wouldn't have done it any other way! Ever hopeful, ever faithful, ever open for the possible!!

I will ALWAYS remember Dana!

Jayne will be attending her funeral tomorrow and I will be with you in spirit you dear girl. Thank You Jayne, for helping to keep us all connected - YOU are a very special person!!

Dana was a lady with an enormous gift for enjoying life. And I'm so very sorry that the world has lost a truly lovely lady who laughed a lot and made people around her smile so. There aren't enough people like Dana and the world is a much sadder place for her leaving it.

Dana, you were an inspiration... I remember meeting you that first day of the Gathering and knowing that you just HAD TO BE the 'Woooohoooo!' girl! I remember your great enthusiasm for all things 're-enacting'... I remember that pic you posted of youself in your newly acquired 'longhunter's' gear... I remember how thrilled you were to receive that beautiful powder horn... I remember how you showed me how to finger-weave... I remember those wonderful deerskin bags you made for Ariel's Cabin... I remember - oh, SO MANY things...

You will ALWAYS be a part of Mohicanland. You belong here. Nothing can change that. God bless you, dear friend.

My heartfelt sympathy goes out to her family and especially to her boys... May the Lord take care of Dana and her family and may he wrap his arms tightly around this family in their time of pain.

Remembering always...
Love
Kate.

I never got to meet Dana personally, but I do remember that when I first entered this wonderful place in 2000, she was one of the many people who embraced me and became a wonderful and fun online friend. I am so sorry she has left us. I have sent up prayers for her family and friends, and also am fervently wishing that the many friends and family of mine who have gone on before me will walk up and greet Dana with the warmth she greeted me and all who she met in Mohicanland.
Rest in peace, Dana.

My head's still in a bit of a muddle since saying farewell to Dana yesterday. I never dreamed five years ago that the picture I took of her at the sunrise would be used in a post such as this. It's slowly sinking in that Dana is gone...she was so determined to keep on living. But that was Dana, according to her family - stubborn and fiercely independent. A week and a half before she died, I visited Dana in hospice. She was looking over some pictures of a house that her nephew bought, hoping she would be able to live there for a while with her boys. Even then, she was thinking of paint colors and how to decorate.

Dana's funeral was one of the most personal and loving services I have ever attended (and I've attended MANY...way too many). A video of pictures ran continuously throughout the service - Dana as baby, sibling, bride, mother, friend. There was even a picture of Dana's trekking gear, all laid out neatly on a folded wool blanket. A niece sang a favorite hymn acappella with a very sweet and beautiful voice. Dana's sister, Donna (a minister from California) gave the eulogy. She was a dynamic speaker and truly brought Dana to life with her words and stories. What struck me most was that Dana was Dana, no matter where she was or who she was with. No pretenses, no put-ons. The family described Dana as the same ever-inquisitive, fun-loving person we all knew. Donna spoke of Dana's unique way of looking at the world, always examining and reexamining anything that interested her. She turned every experience into an educational one. As Donna jokingly put it, she learned more from talking to Dana about art, painting, architecture, gardening, music, the French & Indian war, etc, etc...than she could from any institution of higher learning!

Part way through the service, Donna asked those of us attending to share our own thoughts and stories so we could get to know Dana better through the eyes of others. I passed along the words of love and caring that many of you expressed to me personally or on the board. I let them know that Dana's passion for history and her fascination with the F & I war led us to our friendship and to North Carolina in 2000, where she immediately made many loving and long-lasting friends.

Finally, Dana was laid to rest next to her father. Her casket was carried from the hearse to grave, to sounds of bagpipes playing in the distance. "Amazing Grace"...and not a dry eye amongst us.

Dana's spiritual journey was intensified during her last year and a half. As part of that journey, she spent many hours talking to her sister long-distance. One day she called Donna, and as usual she began with "Hey it's me, Dana...don't you think it's interesting how so many people wait until they're dying to get close to God? You've got to tell people not to wait. Tell them - live each day like it's their last."

I for one am going to try to take Dana's wisdom to heart. I'm going to miss those phone calls - the ones that began with "Hey Jayne. It's me Dana".

Peace to you all,
Jayne

Jayne - THANK YOU for putting that into words. I KNOW that was hard for you!!!! As Joyce said, not a dry eye here either! I am SO GLAD you were able to share how you (WE) felt about Dana. The service sounds like it was just beautiful! I know that too was hard for you but you never hesitate where friends are concerned.

I can just hear her saying "It's me, Dana!"

My heart is heavy and hurts. I have been away at an encampment at Cook Forest since the 16th, and have not been up to date with our Board. A few moments ago I had some time to look at some of the previous posts and found this............

I never met Dana in person. We corresponded on and off Board, and when she decided to jump into reenacting, I sent her some items she'd need from my "Yard sale" box, stuff I no longer needed or had replaced, so she wouldn't have to spend lots of money getting started.

When I found out about her illness, my prayers went out for her daily. I am deeply saddened by her loss, but I know she is in a better place, and in peace at last. Now I will remember Kyle and Steven, and pray that they are OK. Their Mom was a wonderful lady. I am truly sorry I never met her in person.

Rest in peace, Sweet Lady.

My father's people say ... at the birth of the sun and of his brother, the moon, their mother died ... so the sun gave to the earth her body, from which was to spring all life. And he drew forth from her breast the stars. The stars he threw into the night sky to remind him of her soul. [the sky] So there is Dana's monument ...
