I hate to admit this, but I had to watch the movie a few times before I caught the quote by Hawkeye in the Cameron's cabin that someday the right woman would come along and say "You're the one. . ." Then when he and Cora are discussing why he didn't bury the Camerons, that's exactly what she said, and that made him take a second look. Did everyone else catch that early or did it take a while?

| Mountainheart - this has come up before and while a lot of us thought we heard the same thing thing at first - I think she says " You know them well?" talking about the Camerons. Did I get that right y'all? If not - chime in! |

The first time I watched LOTM with closed captions on, I was SO relieved to see Cora actually said "You knew them well."  It sounds EXACTLY like "Then you're the one" -- which makes no sense in the context of their conversation. (He's been talking about why they've left the bodies at the cabin, so I'd always wonder, "He's the one WHAT?"  ) |

I thought exactly the same thing. Then I asked about it here and GG is right. She says, "You knew them well." I had to replay that sentence about 10 times before I finally heard it the right way.
I am just the opposite. I always hear it as "You knew them well." I wonder why some of us hear it as one thing and others hear it as something else???

OK OK OK OK, I also heard "you're the one". I seriously thought I was hearing things because that line didn't make any sense to me either. Probably, after watching the movie 20x's, I decided to turn on my close captioning on my TV, and then I read the line in which she says "You knew them well." It was also a very confusing time for me. Good Lord, I thought my ears were playing tricks on me.  |

Before I watched the movie with captions, there were a couple of instances where I never could quite grasp what was taking place in terms of dialog ... the main one that comes to mind is when Cora and Hawkeye are under the falls and they're arguing back and forth about jumping into the falls. Cora says "go, save yourselves" and then something like "if the worst happens and one survives, something of the other does too". That particular exchange was one I just couldn't make out, maybe over the noise from the water. The captions finally cleared it up for me. (I think the whole sentence may have been cut out in the DVD version -- anyone know for sure?)
The funny thing is ... as much as I couldn't figure them out on my own ... once I read and heard what was really being said, it was as if I'd always known!  |

Funny, my hearing isn't the greatest but I've always heard it as "You knew them well." What took me a long time to get, instead, was what Duncan says to Hawkeye at the Huron village as they are leading him to the fire. Something like: "My compliments, sir, take her and get out." That one took me several watchings to understand. I never thought of checking the closed captioning!

| Wow, those lines also had me confused. The one before Duncan gets roasted and Cora's comment to Hawkeye in the cave. I also had to turn on my captioning to understand what was being said through many parts of the movie. To be honest, I thought that Cora was trying to tell Hawkeye that she was pregnant. I'm not sure if this has ever been discussed in this forum, but the way she tells him "if the worst happens and one survives, something of the other does too". I was sure she was trying to give him a hint.... |

| Ok I always heard "you knew them well" from my first viewing til now. The only part of the movie that still has me baffled is what Cora meant when she said "If the worst should happen and only one of us survives...something of the other does too". I too thought she was trying to say that she was pregnant. But then I thought about it and if Hawkeye is the one that survives then there would be no baby. So what is she talking about? |

| Lol I always heard it as "You knew them well?" too. As for Cora's comment to Hawkeye under the falls, I just thought that was the *coolest*, most romantic thing to say! The pregnancy part never crossed my mind until now! My husband and I both lost our Moms not long after we met, and not too long before the movie. So I think that line had a special resonancy for me because of that. They know they are really in love: and in the midst of all this death and destruction taking place around them, I think Cora's saying we will still carry each other in our hearts. So, if only one of us survives - the other lives on too...? And yes, they did cut those lines form the DVD!! I have no earthly idea why (other than editing for time?)! My favorite misunderstood line is one that someone on another topic mentioned had come up before I think I was even part of Mohicanland... "I cannot be an indigent schooner."!!! :-) I'm guessing that was a mishearing of Alice's words to Cora in the fort's infirmary, when Duncan comes in and Alice says,"I must manage. I cannot be an invalid schoolgirl." Those shotgun mikes do have their shortcomings... |

Mountainheart -- when Cora said "if the worst happens," etc. under the falls, that IS what she says, as far as I know ... I don't know WHAT I thought she said before I found out the actual words, b/c I couldn't understand it at all.
I never considered Cora trying to tell Hawkeye she might be pregnant! I guess it was because only a day (or a few days) had elapsed since "the kiss", so it never crossed my mind that pregnancy would be in the picture ... but it's interesting that it sprang to mind for so many people! |

Back when I thought Cora's "You knew them well" line was "You're the one"... here's how I made that line fit in. Although, I must admit that I felt it was a little bit far-fetched, I thought she was implying that she had some sort of fore-knowledge of Nathaniel. I thought perhaps she had heard of him and his daring exploits over tea in a drawing room in Albany. Watch the look on her face just after she says that line. It could be construed as a sort of awe or amazement that she was actually meeting this mysterious person she had heard about.

Wow WW! I think you just wrote your own backstory for that scene: and it was a *good* one! It does make perfect sense in that context. And the look you mention could also be one of assessment - like she's sizing up his character (uhm, among other things...). ;-) |

| I can see that happening but I don't think the English cared in the least bit about any americans despite what could have been said. But that woul've made an interesting piece to the movie providing they added a scene with Cora hearing about the infamous Mohican. |
