I need some help. I'm a high school student who was assigned to do some questions on this movie after watching it and I'm in need of some assistance to things I didn't understand. If anyone who really knows this movie well can help me, I would much appreciate it.
I know this is basic but for one, who was Jack Winthrop and what was so special about him and what did Nathaniel think of the people living on the frontier?
What was Major Duncan Heyward's opinion of the colonists?
Why was Magua seeking revenge?
I feel real stupid but again, I'm a student in need of help and I did not understand the movie too well even though it was very good.

I don't mean to be rude, but you didn't understand why Magua wanted revenge??? - IF you saw the movie, you didn't pay attention very well!

If you sit down and watch the movie, the answers to your questions are all quite clear. While this site is probably THE most comprehensive site on the internet dealing with this movie, it is not a one stop shopping home work answer service.

WATCH THE MOVIE AGAIN! Good Luck!

It's OK. It's OK. But GG is right!

If you watched it in class, you probably were not able to fully concentrate and pick up on every little tiny nuance... like we fanatics do! I know full well how teens can be and I am sure there were plenty who were goofing off and making fun of everything.

My suggestion is this. If you have the time before the assignment is due, rent or borrow the VHS (which is my preference over the DVD) and sit and watch it thoroughly and carefully... paying very close attention. You will easily have all of your answers.

It isn't a "deep" movie intellectually. You don't have to struggle to figure anything out. It's all right there -- every wonderful, enjoyable second of it!

When you are done, why don't you come back here and post your thoughts? We would love to discuss it with you then. We just don't want to give you your answers!

Good luck, and enjoy!!

I also agree with GG and WW. If you watch this movie again, I guarantee you will end up understanding it and loving it. The movie in my opinion is a masterpiece so all I can say is to give it another shot and if you don't own it yet, try to rent it for your assignment. According to my knowledge, the DVD is the one available for rental not the VHS version. Good Luck and please come back to discuss it if you wish.

I can actually see very clearly why it's hard to see why Magua wanted revenge. It's kind of hard to understand and catch, but if you watch it closely enough, you can find it.

I don't understand why nobody wants to help you!!! I will try. It has been a while since I watched this movie.
I think Jack Winthrop stole Magua's wife from him and later left her.
Major Hayward wanted to marry Alice and settle in America.
Nathaniel liked the idea of settlements and people making good use of the land.
I could be wrong so it might be better if you did watch movie and try to make sure I'm right. I hate to give you the wrong answer.

LH4384--we have a long-standing 'policy' here, if you will, that we don't do someone's homework for them...pure and simple. It has been pointed out for LH8750 why we don't, and how he/she can get the answers to his/her questions. Education is the name of the game....and 8750 has acknowledged that, being an honor student, he/she should have known better. Research is a big part of education. If someone gives the answers, and someone else gets the grade, it sure doesn't help the questioner learn how to find an answer on his own, now does it? I have no problem in sharing where information can be obtained, but I'll not do the work for someone else! Education requires an investment of your own time and/or money.

WW is right--".......sit and watch it thoroughly and carefully... paying very close attention. You will easily have all of your answers."

After reading your 'help', I think you need to watch the movie again, or perhaps just stick to analyzing the Alamo. Watch out for Dillon, though, if you do that!

Actually, in the 1932 version, it was Alice with whom Duncan was in love. Then, between 1932 and 1936 everything changed.

Hi Fitz;
I haven't posted very much: but I'm getting a little less self concious about it. I got a kick out of your comment on Chief Joseph Brant's age at the time of the story! :-) I'd thought the age thing was a bit off too, especially after the second time I saw the movie: but never did bother to check it out. Lurking 4384 is being facetious, I think. For all we know, he could be a History prof. who's trying to get even with all those students who cheat in class!:-o I'd say more of what I think of Hawkeye's view of the settlements: but on the chance that our first Huron lurker (8750) hasn't yet turned in that assignment, I better refrain.

I used to be Lurking 4384. But I have now changed. Yes, I was being facetious. When you are given a ' school project' you, the student are to to do the research.
As for the DDL last of the mohicans, that is indeed a great movie. I have seen it dozens of times and I will watch it many more. But.
When I watch these movies it is from an historial standpoint.
As with all of hollywood movies, they are made for enterainment. We, the watchers can only hope that they do try to be historial correct. I would give this movie a 9 1/2 out of 10. Personally I do like the BBC Last of The Mohicans better. That story is closer to the book. Also the 1920 silent movie is great also.
I hope that the student does their own research from now on. That way your grade is yours, not someone who is doing the work for you.
Yes, I will continue to study the Alamo too.

ARGH!!! If you want to chap my hiney, come to the internet to find all your research answers. I work in a middle school library and when students come in to do research the first place they want to look is the internet... for which I put total blame on the teachers. Dig into those encyclopedias, take a gander through the 900's of the dewey decimel or the biography section, ask about the endless resources available in your library on various and sundry topics. As much as I enjoy the internet and all it has to offer, looking something up and simply printing it out is not research. If the LH's want to consider this site as a research tool...which it certainly is and can be...spend a little time here and peruse. Who knows, you could possibly find your answers here afterall.

Couldn't have said it better myself Theresa. I personally don't like to do research on the internet because half of what you think you are learning is not accurate. Stick with the books. It kills me how lazy the new generation has become. I'll never understand why they think they can get everything the easy way without working hard for it. Oh well, guess we are getting long in the tooth around here!

Now hold on just a minute here! If I understand correctly, you are implying that people who don't care to hand out school-work answers on a platter are to be blamed for causing some misguided high school student to get ahold of guns and blow away his fellow students? Well now, that is certainly warped logic, if I have ever heard it! I, for one, highly resent this.

And we actually were being quite gentle. Firm... but gentle. You should hear us when we are really on a toot! In reality, we were trying to help this person by offering sound parental-type advice.

Bet you're a high school student, aren't you, LH6217? Well, wake up and smell the coffee, as Ann Landers used to say. And do your own homework... preferrably in a library, as Theresa said. You'll be all the better for it and may actually learn something.

"Bet you're a high school student, aren't you, LH6217?"

Actually, WW, you'd lose that bet.

If the kid had someone else to turn to, or thought he could understand it by watching it again, I don't think he would be asking; but assuming he doesn't and can't, what better forum to come and get answers/another perspective. So you have a policy of not doing the kids homework, that's good, but don't tell him to watch the movie again and pay attention this time. The questions he asked are fairly obvious and I've only seen the movie twice, but maybe this kid has some kind of comprehension problem....and he's turning to someone he doesn't know to get help because he doesn't want his friends to know he can't grasp the obvious......or there maybe any number of reasons he turned to this forum.

My point is, don't dismiss kids so harshly---ok, so you say you weren't being harsh, you were being firm. I still feel that if he had someplace else to turn, he would have.

....course, I'm a pushover for a sad story, and maybe this kid in trying to "get over", but as an adult with nothing to lose, I'd rather err on the side of being helpful. If this kid is clever enough to try to con you, then he's clever enough to know that he'll someday have to pay the piper.

Thanks.

LH6217,
How does it help a child to give them the answers? What do they learn??? Nothing, except for finding an easy way out of homework!!! Nope, you are way off base on this one. GG, WW, and the others refused to give LH8750 the answers because they do care about children and want them to do their own thinking instead of someone else's. If the child is an honor student, then there is no reason why they can't go back and watch the movie and find out all of the answer's on their own. Even if they aren't an honor student, they still need to try to find their own answers, even if they are wrong, at least it was their own work.

All right. I have a couple more things to say, and then I am done with this subject.

1. This student, by his/her own admission, is an Honor Student. Most generally, honor students do not have comprehension problems. Most generally, honor students are clear thinkers who can grasp simple concepts presented quite obviously in a movie. I repeat: I suspect that for whatever reason, he/she was not paying close attention. Furthermore, all of the answers to the questions could be gotten by simply reading the script that is posted on this very site. There is a wealth of information here! I just got the feeling that this student did not want to take the time to look.

2. If you will re-read my original post in answer to this student, you will clearly see that I was far from harsh or dismissive. I offered a very valid suggestion, and that was to simply watch it again. Do you see that I also invited the student to come back here and discuss it with us further? I meant what I said.

3. I never accused this student of trying to "con" us. And I don't believe that he/she was. In fact, the student seemed quite embarrassed and contrite about the whole thing, and that is precisely why I attempted to appease the situation. I am very sorry that this student did not take my invitation to come back and discuss the movie with us. We would have gladly helped out in that way.

We have several "young-uns" here who are regular posters, and we treasure their participation. We'll even help them with their homework, should they ask, but we won't just hand them the answers!

And now, LH6217... I extend the invitation to you. Why don't you register and join us here in Mohicanland? We'd love to have you! You will quickly see that we are not the horrible ogres you seem to think we are.

Cheers!
