Been sitting here musin' over the happenings of this past year and - a thought suddenly popped into my head (as they do! )... Are the Great Mohican Gatherers of 2004 immortalised in stone yet????

I can't help wondering if Mohicanland is now officially part of the 'River Walk' in Chimney Rock. Anyone know?

If any of you folks are close enough to check it out, could you perhaps also get a pic of 'our' brick in the pavement and put it up on the Board here for us, to let us check it out???

WISHING EVERY ONE OF MY MOHICANLAND BUDDIES A HAPPY AND PROSPEROUS NEW YEAR!!!!

Hi Kate!
Back around September, Donna wondered the same thing and asked me to check it out. Before I could make the trip up there, we had major flooding in this area. There was an interview on a local news site with some Chimney Rock official (can't remember who) about the Riverwalk being destroyed. I don't know the extent of the damage or if it has been rebuilt yet. Any other locals know? I've had a terribly busy few months and haven't been up there to check it out. :-( Sorry.....
Love

Steph! Hi there!

Gosh, I'd forgotten about the flooding and how that may have affected the Riverwalk!! WHAT A DREADFUL SHAME!!! The Riverwalk is SUCH a pretty place to spend some time!!!! Having said that, I guess if it's only the walk that was damaged, we can be thankful for small mercies (thinking 'Asian Tsunami' here - and 90,000 deaths so far, thousands of casualties and with many more poor souls to be accounted for!! How dreadful is THAT!!!!)

Well... I do hope that C.R. can fix the walk - it was a brilliant scheme and I LOVED the idea that something so much fun (Gathering) would have a permanent stone to remind everyone that 'once we were there'...

You're SORRY you haven't checked it out for us????? WHAT A SILLY BILLY!! OF COURSE you were too busy! You had a WEDDING to go to!! I do hope that you and Jule had a wonderful day!!!

Yes, if someone else can give us any info, that would be good. So good to hear from you, Steph - have a HAPPY NEW YEAR, my dear friend!!

Yes you're right, Kate.... the Asian disaster puts all of our problems in perspective. Yes, our floods cost property and even lives, but nothing on the scale of what those poor people are facing.
I will do my best to check on the River Walk soon!
Happy New Year!
Love
Steph

Native of the area here........ last I heard before leaving the country the River walk was still damaged. Due to the impending winter the park and surrounding tourist traps usually do not mend storm damage till spring when better weather can be counted upon. Seeing that I am going to be away from my beloved mountains for two more years, it will be nice to see the repairs done when I return home.

Hey there, Demetre,

THANKS for that info! Not repairing things till spring makes sense.

I can well understand how you would miss those mountains, sartain!! It's such a beautiful place to come from! Still... you know you're going back home eventually. That's the main thing! I have JUST LOVED trekking over to NC each year, to see it all that breathtaking scenery.

Mind you, I lived in Germany too for three years (twice, actually) - it has it's beautiful areas too, but... there is never anywhere like 'home'!! (And MY home has some pretty spectacular places too.)

Again, thanks for the update... Chimney Rock is very special to us and it's good to know what's happening re: the River Walk.

No worries... it was a pleasure to find people so interested in what I have sometimes taken for granted so many times. Hope those stones can be replaced so that future generations might look around and find small monuments to some wonderful people and places.

Here is a little news blurb from our local news station's website, WLOS:
River Walk Repairs
One of Rutherford County's main attractions is close to recovery following the September floods.

Crews are rebuilding the River Walk in Chimney Rock after it was washed away by the rain-swollen Rocky Broad River.

The town's Mayor says this time around, construction crews are adding steel and concrete reinforcements to protect it from future flooding.

The walkway stretches about a quarter mile along the riverfront; it should be open to the public by Memorial Day.

So that's that for now!!!

Great to hear that, Stephanie! It was too beautiful a place to lie in ruins for an undetermined period of time!

THANKS FOR THE UPDATE, Sweetie!

Here is an update regarding our brick on the Riverwalk sidewalk:
Recently I checked into it and found that our brick is made and ready to be installed. It was going to be installed last fall but then the storms and flooding hit, and all installations were put on hold until the repair equipment is out of the way. The man I spoke with estimated that our brick would be installed in about a month. I will try to check back during the summer and, if possible, post a picture here on the site for all to see....once, we were here.
Thanks to Donna for her efforts in ordering the brick!!

"Oh Man!" They "screwed em up".... How could they....
I wrote it very clearly for them......

1928 instead of 1998.....
My last name could use one more R

They should have called me if they weren't sure. Those stones cost
enough...
How hard were they to find? Are they out there easy to see?

Guess I'll have to bring a little chisel the next time I go and
try and make that 2 an 8...

Well,,,, I still think it's cool that we left our mark....

What'll all think?
Thanks Steph for checking them out and posting the pics...

Unbelievable. You know, you guys really do have the right to complain and demand that they redo them and make them correct. It if were me, I certainly would. There is just no excuse for those kinds of errors, and it is very poor business.
