My favorite scene is still the first scene I ever saw. I ran into LOTM by accident a few years ago while channel surfing and TNT was showing it over and over. I stopped channel surfing because of the music but stayed put because of the scene. A young man, apparantly an Indian, was scrambling almost on all fours up a steep rock slope, and then the scene panned beyond him to the complete beauty of the blue blue blue Blue Ridge Mountains. I didn't know what movie I was watching, and I certainly didn't know what story was going on that resulted in this scene, but I was gripped. I mean, gut-wrenchingly gripped. I watched to the end with almost no word spoken in the movie, and by that time I figured out this must be LOTM. I then watch the next two consecutive runs until about 2 or 3 in the morning.
I don't know why but I still find THAT scene the most poignant -- something about the man running for some desperate purpose while the grand and ancient blue mountains watch, and that music plays in the background...

There a many, many reasons I love LOTM, but the main reason I saw it 15 times in theatres was the love scene! It was incredibly well choreographed, but looked natural, and the expressions on Madeleine Stowe's face were simply sublime. This scene is more deeply stirring to my blood than any other love scene could possibly be! Definitely my favourite love scene of all time. If I could watch only one scene in LOTM, this would be it! How about you guys?

I never posted in this thread, I think because I was having such a difficult time picking just one scene to be my favorite. But I think I am ready now. I approached it this way: if someone told me I had to pick one scene and one scene only to watch if I were stranded on a desert island , this is the one I would pick.
From the moment Nathaniel tells his friends that he "has a reason to stay" and that the reason "is a lot better looking than you, Jack Winthrop"... to his purposeful stride as he walks through the fort, past the people resting and past the dancers, comes up beside Cora and takes her hand to lead her away to the rampart... I am in Heaven!
The music (The Gael, isn't it?), the lighting, the setting, the situation, and the utterly raw romance of that incredible attraction all work together to make this scene one of the most sensuous movie scenes ever made. I just adore it. |

Thanks to those of you who revived this thread -- I would have missed it otherwise.
My favorite is the scene inside Cameron's cabin, after Chingachgook, Uncas, and Hawkeye have been welcomed by the Camerons and Jack Winthrop. A relatively brief scene, but it establishes so much -- that these people of different backgrounds are very fond of each other, that they find themselves in a dangerous environment, and that for the moment they've found fellowship and refuge around the table. The golden lighting mimics firelight so beautifully, and the interior of the cabin is so visually rich -- I want the camera to pan slowly and look into every nook and cranny so that I can see what's there. (And then -- let's be honest here -- I want to OWN all of it! That, to me, is "Early American" decorating!) Of course, on second and subsequent viewings, the cabin scene also has an aura of sadness, because of what happens later. All in all, one of the many scenes that showcase the director's brilliance. |

First of all, I love the whole movie! But one of my favorite scenes is the scene before the love scene of hawkeye and cora. The way they find each other and follow each other to a quiet place without saying a thing... love it!And ofcourse the scene where they were hiding in the graveyard...

My favorite is the beginning, one of the first few scenes, when Duncan runs from left to right, then, all of a sudden, he trips! okay, so its not the most heartfelt moment in the movie...but you have to admit, its funny! |

Though I love all the scenes with Uncas, my favorite scene in the movie is "The Glade," when they are hiding from the Huron and the French in the burial ground. Cora comes and lays beside Nathaniel and he tells her of his past, speaking of the "sky" as a "mounument" to his folks and the Camerons, which is a wonderful tribute. And the music playing in the background is hauntingly beautiful. |
What you give of yourself is priceless. |

There are many scenes that I like. Among them my favoriate are the energetic elk hunt scene, the quiet, yearninglook Uncas gave Alice in the river walk scene, the bittersweet moment when Uncas pulled Alice back from the waterfall and the two of them embraced each other, and also the climatic, heartbreaking cliff-top scenes. |
