Hi all,
I am new to this forum and I wasn't really sure where to post my question. I have one thing in common with all of you... I just love LOTM!!!! But I have a few questions concerning creating a period mohican kit so I hope that you guy's might be able to help me. My biggest problem, being from Belgium is that I need to find everything on-line and that isn't really easy.
To start with, where could I find some nice looking periodically correct deerskin leg breeches ( you know like the ones worn in the movie by uncas, chingachcook and nathaniel)
secondly I'm looking for a good place for some affordable sashes and leg garters/leg ties.
And last but not least I'm looking for a good place for hunting shirts, preferably like the ones used in LOTM.
Thx for the help to come,
Erik

If you get correct materials and clothing, it will not be cheap. The leggins should be either be wool or braintan deerskin, and will have to be made and custom fitted by you. They should fit the legs very tightly. In the early part of LOTM hawkeye wears shorter leggings with breeches, and later, after Fort WH, he wears longer leggings with a breechcloth. So you need to decide which you want to duplicate. Real braintan is not cheap, maybe $12 or so a sq. ft. One supplier is Wooden Hawk (http://members.aol.com/_ht_a/woodenhawk/tradingco.html). There are others. Do a search on Google. There is also "artificial" braintan which does not possess the characteristics of the real thing.
For sash and leg ties, Wilde Weavery is the best (http://wildeweavery.com/).
For hunting shirts, I like Mike Branson's at Trailhead Trading (http://www.trailhd.com/).
Also, do a little research before you buy. Like The Patriot", LOTM is a movie and not history. Many of the item were not necessarily used during that period, or ever.

Thanks for the info,
those are a few good sites!! but isn't there a site where they both have braintan deerskin, or the replica material and also manufacter custom leggings??
Also, as you point out yourself I am not really up to date on the F&I war clothing. So I was wondering if you could perhabs explain to me what a more accurate outfit for the three lead actors would have been?
thx

Erik; Fitz Williams is correct... Go to www.snowshoemen.com -Absorb the site. In portraying the LOTM period New York frontier, the clothing, accoutrements, etc. would be virtually what New Englanders wore. You may not need brain tanned anything and probably not sashes. Especially no Indian embellishments. These men and their fathers and grandfathers had been fighting the french & Indians for generations. They may have adopted some woodcraft and survival skills but they would not have worn breechclouts or beads or have tattoos. Riflemen's frocks would also not have been here. I am finding out, after all these years, that the fun of this whole thing is not being absolutely correct in everything (we can't)- But to get close by research and the necessity sometimes of having to make things ourselves..or to use materials at hand. You may have to use heavy linen or leather leg ties for instance. The snowshoemen pages taught me a lot..However,the Rangers did embellish somewhat. You may want to check out Private Chauncey's great website: reenacting.net--or find the site-Sarah's Living History page through the mohicanpress search engine. Regards, Tim

Actually, it depends on whether Nathaniel is the adopted son of Chingacook or a white man with a close association with the Mohican Chingacook and Uncas. If it is the former, and this is hinted at, then Nathaniel IS Mohican and would have worn Indian clothing. As I watched the movie, it became painfully obvious that only the title and some of the book was borrowed from Cooper and the rest supplied by script writers.I don't know who advised on Indian clothing for the movie but it was, to say the least, interesting. I read Tim's post and I'm not sure I follow it.I thought Nathaniel was,if not an adoted Mohican, certainly a man intimately associated with the tribe in other words a "white Indian"and as such certainly would have worn Indian clothing and gear or at least very little white man's gear. The hunting shirt worn by Nathaniel was basically a shirt/smock of the type worn all over the frontier by various people.I don't recall the belt/sash he wore or the leg ties. This is a fine action movie of the F&I period but as has been said it can't be used as documentation for mid 18th century Indian gear.I enjoyed the movie in spite of anomalies such as the hockey stick like war club and the early 19th century Allentown rifle. One of my Native friends has called it "The John Wayne F&I Movie"but we have to look at it for what it is ,a really good action movie which happened to be set in the mid 18th century.BTW I also saw The Patriot a couple of times and wondered why they didn't call it "The Rev.War Mad Max" It would be no problem to recreate Nathaniel's clothing since it's pretty generic quasi Indian and somewhat similar to what I suggest to newbies wanting to do northern woodland Indian.I hope I haven't ruffled too many feathers but that's the way I look at this movie.
