This past weekend was Doc's Tactical in Ohio... one of the best events in the country. The weather started out rainy, very humid and almost HOT! We sent up our tents Friday night and it felt like summer, but by midnight the moon was out and the air was like silk. On Saturday, I didn't keep track of how well the skirmishes in the woods were going, but I could tell that the guys were all having a blast, no matter what. The winds picked up and blew hard most of the day. The 42nd's dining fly got loose from it's moorings and lost a whole corner in the campfire... but Sgt Wilhill from my unit saved the day and showed everyone how to turn it into a wind break. I have a photo below of our own Sgt. Munro from the Board holding one of the wind break's poles. Maybe he'll comment on how the weekend went from a soldier's point of view.

We ended up with a pretty neat place to eat, drink and be merry. The moon was bright again that night, and the air crisp and cold, then Sunday the day was blue and golden and pretty near perfect.

Funny you should mention that, I am preparing an after-action report of the weekend and shall post it later in the week. I like the photo, but does my butt look that big?

I'm sorry, Sgt. Munro, but I can't see your butt!

But I thought you all looked pretty good in your kilts, and was surprised (if not disappointed) that with all the wind blowing there wasn't a lot More to see! You are all pretty expert at keeping the proper decorum (well, except for the one young lad, but luckily he wasn't regimental!)

Here's a picture of some Rangers in the Woods at Doc's... proud of their snug little wilderness camp. I believe their names are Finny and Paul (AKA The Druid):

Actually, their names are Flynn (or Flynny) and Paul. Better known by those who read my stories, as Ranger Hicks and Rifleman Flynn. They are both members of Patarcity's Company of Rogers' Rangers, and we were lucky to have them with us for the tactical.

blueotter then asked: Maybe he'll comment on how the weekend went from a soldier's point of view.

Why yes I will, and I apologize for the considerable delay. I was hoping to also include an after-action report of Great-Great Grandfather Hector Munro's exploits during the 'Siege of Fort Randolph 1645', but alas I was unable to attend at the last minute, so only the 'Engagement Near Fort LaBusse 1759' can be told...

It was unusual to have a dry weekend at this event, but most fortunate for the functioning of our weapons. The turnout for the Crown Forces was very small, with Graham's Coy. of the 42nd RHR being the only Regular unit (Excepting of course, Sgt. Wilhill from Gordon's Coy. of the 1/60th RAR). But, as they say, 'size doesn't matter', and we did not let that deter us from conducting offensive operations.

We were able to bolster our numbers, thanks to some 'accidental diplomacy' with the Ohio Nations. A Native friend of mine came into the camp and asked if I had any cartridges. Without thinking, I gave him two hand-full of cartridges, two carbine-sized flints, and offered him a drink. (I know what it is like to get to an event, only to discover that you forgot to refill your cartridge magazine and/or forget your flint wallet) Then, stepping into his character, he thanked me for the gifts and hospitality, and bemoaned the lack of gifts from the French at the fort. He also promised to bring some of his brothers, who were also dissaffected with their French Father, to fight alongside of his British Brothers.

During the largest engagement on Saturday, my friend proved true to his word and arrived with over a half-dozen of his best warriors. This was very timely, since Graham's Company was already playing the 'hammer' to Bagley's Company 'anvil', with Frenchie in the middle. Our own Rangers were busy keeping a good part of the French Flank Guard pinned-down (Rogers Rangers are the best! They are like having your own 18th Century SEAL Team), as the woods errupted with the world's finest Light Infantry... Our Native Allies!

There were many engagements, and 'missions' that weekend, but the above battle was by far, our finest hour. Afterwards, we issued the King's Ration, and settled down to cook our rations. The night was filled with singing (led by the 42nd's own Corporal MacIntyre, of course) and merriment. I do look forward to next year already...
