This is the first installment of the part entitled: "...A Finish To This Damned War" 1764-1765
“Unpleasant Surprises” by Sgt. Munro
Fort Pitt, The Ohio Country
24 April 1764 / 0930 Hours
Marching through the night, with only a four-hour respite; Sergeant Munro, Corporal MacIntyre and Welethetowaco arrived at the main gate of Fort Pitt. The hatchet-faced Corporal Trench, of the 60th Royal Americans, was present and inspecting his posted guards. Munro and his party halted at Corporal Trench’s direction, as he examined Welethetowaco.
Stepping back, with an ‘all-knowing’ look on his face, Corporal Trench then said, “He is obviously an Oneida of the Iroquois Confederation, and since they are neutrals I am ordered to allow entry.”
As Corporal Trench motioned the party to pass, Sergeant Munro said, “There is no tricking you, eh Corporal?”
Corporal Trench was about to respond, but Munro and his friends walked away through the covered gallery, toward the parade ground. Duncan pretended not to notice as Ian threw Corporal Trench a quick two-finger ‘archer’s salute’ from behind. Once on the parade, Corporal MacLean greeted them with, “Sergeant, Corporal, I am glad to see that you arrived safely.” Then MacLean came to attention and saluted as he continued, “Captain Welethetowaco, sir, ‘tis good to see you again.”
Returning MacLean’s salute, Welethetowaco replied, “Corporal Gordon, I am pleased to see you well.”
“Gordon, my brother will be staying with us for a few days. Will you see that the lads prepare a proper welcome for him?”
“Aye Sergeant, it will be a pleasure.” Corporal MacLean then added, “Sergeant, the Captain needs to see you as soon as possible. He is in his quarters.”
“Very well, I shall go at once.” Turning to Welethetowaco, Munro said, “Brother, you go with Ian and Gordon, and I will join all of you shortly.”
As Welethetowaco departed with Corporals MacIntyre and MacLean for MacKenzie Barracks, Sergeant Munro walked toward the Officer’s Barracks. Once there, the orderly directed him to Captain Graham’s room and announced his arrival.
“Send the Sergeant in, please.”
Sergeant Munro entered Captain Graham’s sitting room, where he found his commander finishing his morning tea. Saluting, Sergeant Munro said, “Sir, you wished to see me?”
“Yes Duncan, please be at your ease.” Captain Graham said, motioning toward one of the chairs. Once seated, Graham continued, “Duncan, I have some bad news to relay to you. Six Pak escaped custody of this post on the night of the 22nd.”
Visibly surprised and upset, Sergeant Munro asked, “Which of the lads was so careless…”
Interrupting his sergeant, Captain Graham said, “It was not the men of our company on duty when it happened. Captain Grant is conducting an investigation into the incident, in the meantime do be careful.”
“Aye sir.”
…Meanwhile, at Fort Niagara:
Major Cooper was seated in his office finishing his dispatch, detailing the mission against the Miamis to General Gage, when the door was abruptly opened. Seeing Brigadier Bradstreet enter the room, Major Cooper rose to his feet, and said “Good morning, sir. How may I be of service?”
Smiling, Bradstreet responded, “I have here an order for the disbandment of the Queen’s Royal American Rangers.” Unfolding the sheaf of paper, he continued with, “You and Captain Patarcity are to be placed on half-pay, and the men are to be drafted into the 46th Regiment of Foote. Sergeants Metz and Thacher are to have their warrants recalled, with the option of enlisting as private soldiers in the 46th Regiment.”
Major Cooper was aware that General Amherst, gave such an order prior to his recall, but he hoped that General Gage would have succeeded in having it rescinded. Apparently, the Horse Guards were in agreement with General Amherst. Appearing not at all surprised, Major Cooper then asked, “When is the order to be made effe
