Hello Again
I just got my order from Flying Canoe Traders, and they are put together really well. I ordered a pair of Long Gaiter and a couple of pairs of Drop Front Breeches.
My question for this group is that I need to stain them. Right now there are a white canvas.
I am a F&I 42nd Highlander.
I was told that I should stain my pants with coffee, and my Long Gaiter a blue.
I am just wondering what are some other colors that I could use, that this clothing would have been used by some Highlanders?

Was it your sergeant that told you to use thoses colors? I would be more interested in what your officers think than what we will guess since you will be serving with your officers. |

That's the ticket, Kurt!! Thanks for that answer to Jeff.....it's the officers of the unit that can answer those questions...Actually, in Malcolm's unit they have a Board of Authenticity which is in charge of all research and make those decisions which are then supported by the officers.....Many Flags (I've got to find Cousin 1st Sjt. MacWilliam...I keep giving out answers to questions that he should be answering!!)

Just trying to be helpful. Since I joined a Rogers Rangers unit, clothing is more varied since we did not really have a uniform.
I would expect a more uniform uniform in a British unit.
A rule of thumb that will save you money is always discuss with active unit members before a purchase or a modification. |

Hi Jeff,
I might be able to help you out on this, ie. your question about breeches and gaiters worn by the 42nd RHR. Starting in about 1759, orders recorded in a couple of orderly books show the recycling of unservicable tents into breeches for the men. This was done to provide a fatigue uniform that was far more practical and cheaper to replace than the feldhbeg or 'small kilt'. A sidenote, the feldhbeg was a recycling of the feldhmorh or 'great kilt', and it was the original fatigue or marching uniform of the 42nd, circa 1757.
Back to the main question; the canvas breeches were probably closer to a 'coffee-stained' color, due to the weathered and worn-out Hemp-linen tent cloth, from which they were manufactured. As to the style; neither Stewart's or Reid's Orderly Books specify if they were drop-front or drop-fly, they only stated that 'worn-out tents to be made into breeches for the men'. In my group, some of us have off-white canvas drop-front knee breeches to represent this optional uniform. We do not worry about dying them, since local enviromental conditions will age them properly in due time.
On to gaiters; I cannot speak for other regiments, but in the 42nd we do have brown canvas 'marching gaiters' as part of our secondary 'Light Company' uniform. There is record of the 42nd being issued these shortly after our arrival in North America, in 1756 (A procurement contract, dated January 1757 reflected that). The 42nd was never issued the white 'parade gaiters', since we had our own 'unique' caddis bag-hose to wear for garrison/guard mount.
