was at the all-you-can-eat chinese buffet in glens falls yesterday, grabbed a few tourist papers, not a real scouting mission,though... still pretty busy there this time of the year... the season there is july 4 until 'lost italian' day (10/12) after which it clears out real fast... up in cedar flow the leaves are in full color now, just starting to turn in lake george village

the amusement park is 'great escape' - a chain, resonable sised

the boat that goes up into the narrows is 'mohican', a 2 decker, about 50 footer, can get up into the islands, and i've seen it up close turning at redrock, which is an undeveloped area of the lake... the mid point of the lake george tactical, and still looking much as in coopers day... a 3 hour tour is $15..20 bucks, and a meal can be had...
it is the smallest of the 3 that company operates, and a full day or night can be spent on a boat if wanted...

theres a few places that do white water rafting on the hudson, expect time, cost and conditions to be not unlike the nohliky(sp??}...

the south side of lake george village is like another kittery, lots of outlet shops...

more to come...

Greetings, All,

I'm so glad to see so much interest in a unofficial Gathering up north. We talked about this years ago but it seems like it might have enough momentum to happen.

If you do want to do it, I suggest picking the dates now, so people can plan. Lots and lots of places to visit but I suggest following the idea of going to Fort Ticonderoga for the F&I Grand Encampment Weekend to see some of the 18thC up close and personal. Ticonderoga has a number of hotels and can hold quite a feww people, but I believe the town of Fort William Henry, being a big tourist town, might fill up quickly. That said, I suppose we can look into booking a bunch of rooms at the big hotel there. It seems like a good place to have our own base camp, and a good location to get to LOTM-specific sites.

As much as I love Fort #4, it's not at all related to LOTM and will take you out of your way -- maybe something for people to see if they have spare time at the start or end of the Gathering.

Way back, I volunteered to help organise; I know Donna knows the area well. Bob Bearor's knowledge is huge and I'll bet we can get him to give us a tour some day, but I know the right people to give an incredible tour of Fort Edward's remains and Rogers' Island. (And let's not forget that Bob is on the FRENCH side!!!)

The Fort Ti event is the last weekend in June, if you want to start there. And we can find out from Bob the dates of the big 250th events nearby.

Let me know if I can help!

YHOS,
Pvt Chauncey

To all potential gatherers...Besides Fort Wm. Henry, I am a member of the Fort George (Battlefield) Alliance which is concerned with conserving artifacts and also the continuing interpretaiton of the site. Fort George is the preserved NY State land which saw continuing warfare from the French war as well as the Revolution and is the site of the massacre after the capitulation of Ft. Wm. Henry. This coming weekend we are reenacting "Carleton's Raid" which was the last and yet another brutal massacre at the site.(1780). This year we will have over 250 participants. I hope to see & meet Kurt. I had been talking with Bob Bearor last week and have mailed him some of the postings that concern a gathering up here next year. Plus- a copy of the Marceau photo which is purported to be him!). Besides my Ft. Wm. Henry shows, I conduct tours for various school groups, etc. which go from Lake George village-- the Montcalm battery sites and his camp site as well as The Lake George Historical Association which has a room devoted to the F&I Radeau and Lake George vessels and artifacts, THE Fort, and the (Fort George) fortified camp and massacre site. I would be happy to be involved with such a tour for gatherers. I am a memeber of the Fort Edward Rogers'Island visitors center and would be available for liason with that site should gatherers want to visit.(A 20 min.ride). Today, I hunted turkeys up on Rattlesnake Cobble. (No rattlesnakes-or turkeys encountered) I use a .62 calibre fusil de chasse flinlock musket for this hunt. From certain points on the Cobble, I can see Fort Wm. Henry. It is satisfying that I can hunt in forests that are so close to the LOTM site and that at least (the land) has retained a wildness that was so crucial to the saga that was the F&I & Revolutionary war period. Warmest regards, Tim

f&i ti runs next year june 26, 27, {i might be a day off}... the gatherings tended to run sunday to saturday, so the end date would probaly be june 26 (sat)... the connection fort 4 has is it was the return point of rogers 'northwest passage' from the st.francis attack... a ranger party is held there the weekend closest to haloween...

at least 3 of us on this list are in 'lake scramble' mode, after that, more agressive planning will take place... will work on having a real rough draft of a possible week, and probaly spin it off as a new topic... possibly a planning meeting in the area?... ti & #4 shut down for the season near haloween, when does wm henry?

now that 'cranky season' is here, time to kick this one back up to the top and add some thoughts...

the 2005 unofficial a-la-carte northern ungathering

timing - week sunday 6/19-saturday 6/25 {week before july 4 week, schools should be out before then}

things on the list to see -
f&i ticonderoga grand encampment
fort william henry/lake george village
hudson river gorge white water trip {about 15 miles, 1 day}
rogers island/visitor center
crown point/chimney point {2 museums, 2 states, 1 mile between}
lunch or dinner cruise on lake george on the mohican
lake champlain maritime museum
some kind of a lake george east shore hike, possibly from shelving rock or pike brook

possible side trips -
cooperstown
howe caverns
great escape amusement park {possible alternate for people not interested in white water}

costs - white water will be the expensive one - near $75, but midweek and a group discount
can help that, the boat may be near $40, but thats also a meal, the theme park may be near $40 also, everything else is museum and park fees, nothing over $10..$15 bucks.. then there's lodging... one next to wm henry may be neat, there are others out of the touristy areas on 9n....

see what happens... a long winter settling in...

It all sounds so good and I really want to be there, but I will have to wait and see how finances are. I have to plan for a vacation at the end of July. Some of my long time buddies that I have met over the internet will be staying a week in northern North Carolina, so I have to be there with them. But I really want to go on this trip too. Oh, why couldn't I have been born rich so that I could go everywhere and anywhere that I want to?????

Love,
Kay

I visited the website, but I didn't see the details. Could you get a little more specific? I did manage to generate a dire warning, though.

Opps, I guess you are not a Studifan "in good standing"! You must have stumbled into our dungeon area where we punish and torture who we wish! ROFL! I have to live up to my reputation of being harsh, judgemental, evil and tyrannical after all!

Yes, you are right, I was not specific enough...go to the MESSAGE BOARD and find the topic "Update on our Gathering". Sorry Fitz! The details are that Wes will be shooting "Dance Hall of the Dead", the next in the PBS Mystery! series based on the Tony Hillerman novels in the Albuquerque area in May. He has invited his fans on the set and hopes to include us as extras in the movie if possible. At the very least, we hope to watch Wes as he portrays Joe Leaphorn. The schedule is still tentative.

Ok, this time I made it, without being captured by Hurons, or ending up in the dungeon. Albuquerque? That's even farther away than Alabama. Why don't they shoot something in Qualla? After all, he is Cherokee. But probably Oklahoma Cherokee, though. Well, y'all have fun!

Fitz,
I don't know if you have ever been out that way, but New Mexico is beautiful. If there is anyway possible for y'all to go, then you really should. I know that I won't be able to make it. In fact, I may have to put off visiting Ros in Arizona till next year. I was wanting to pay her a visit this year, but so far it doesn't look like it is going to happen.

Love,
Kay

I have always wanted to pack my Tilley and my trowel and sign on with a dig in the Four Corners area. I would love to see it and work there a while. It's just that there is so much to be done here. Maybe one day . . .
