OK. here is my tale of tales, late very late as it is; as usual, our journey to the East (or the Sherman's march; subsitute Sweetser's) march to the sea [Eastern Coast that is] started at 9pm the evening BEFORE we were to leave; my sister Karen received a phone call telling us our tickets were dust; our flight was cancelled; would this be a problem????? Well, my sister pumped her arm and said 'Yes"; (to those who don't know, my sisters only come to the Gatherings because I, Jo, love the movie, they could care less.....)(but they LOVE the people they've met so they come again...and again...)...but upon thinking of her sister's thunder was able to secure tickets from the SFO airport to Charlotte to ASheville....always a trip for us to go to the Gatherings...
and so it begins....

to be continued....

We had a very mundane trip east; no cattle calls for flights; no missed seats; but NO FOOD unless one bought a meal.....Asheville Airport is very very nice; no one was anywhere around unlike the other airports we had arrived in for this 4th journey for the Great MOhican Sachem...we got our rental car; found a place to eat...although it was Fathers Day...at a steak place and then on to Chimney Rock to our great place to stay at the Genvea Inn...when we pulled in, we met Karen, what a great welcome! a great hello, and before that, the Whitney's, our buds for all time....it was so great to see these people....I was able to go down to the room of ARiels' cabin....what incrediable things to see!!!! I am sorry I don't remember who I saw (a medical problem with my memory....) but my name went on so many things...I thought of Kate and how she would be proud of what was offered for getting...

OH, there is one thing I forgot to tell, on our way, because our flight was changed...we were pulled out of line for a "secondary" search...no offense to the 911 tatics...but...sisters trying to blow up each other?... we were flagged off to the side and had to show everything; our shoes, our inner waist parts of the pants, our bras, everything....towards the end of the search, they asked us where we were going...(always a unreal tell, heh!); so Kathie told him we were going to a Last of the Mohicans reunion, at which point, he pulled out a program with the back page first - with the "butts" and the letters "LOTM" on them; and he said: "I don't want to know anything about this....go along"...." So we were able to board finally...

OK, Jo. Hold on a minute here. Maybe no one else picked up on this... but I just gotta ask something. You said that you had to show everything, even your bras. What!?! Do I understand you correctly? What did you have to do... unbutton or lift your shirts and flash your... er... ba-zooms... at the guy?

I am having a real hard time with this one. Help me out here.

And yet we are not allowed to "profile" suspects?!?!?!

I must admit I've never been searched like that - that sounds a bit harsh (If you were Diana Ross you could have complained!) it is always a lady that searches women on flights I've been on! AND he didn't want to know about the LOTM reunion? What a git! Think he forgot to take his happy pills!

Jacy and all,
Sorry to be so late with this; we didn't actually have to "show our bras"; "or show anything" of note (not that we've anything to show anyway...ha, ha!) but we were taken out of line, placed on plastic chairs next to the mass populace going through the general metal detector machines, while they - a woman with a "wand" dragged it next to every bit of clothing we had on; especially our bras (as we found out later someone in Europe had a bra bomb on)...but we only had to turn down our waistband of our jeans - ??? to show the inside studs??? to show we had no bombs....and yes a lady searched us with a guy there with him seaching our handbags yet again; she was VERY polite and proper right in front of everyone else streaming towards the flights they were going to; (I apologize if I said anything to lead your imagination astray); I am only a bit upset as to the fact the airlines switched our flights which made us "S" on our tickets (printed by the airlines) - secondary flight "risks" not any real reasons of us being "suspect" to speak of; and if this is the way the government choses to "inspect" flight risks; then we've got to be afraid;...but then agian, this is not the forum for this or my political opinion. I was able to keep my mouth shut as I took my shoes off, showed my stomach....etc. Whatever. I guess that is how the administration hopes to find terriosts; everyone who has a ticket changed by the airlines after the airlines cancelled a flight; beware. It took us over an hour to get through all of the check outs; luckily we had the time; would most people???? I think not.
I have been searched much more throughly back in 1971 in Cyprus when they were at war with Turkey or had troubles then; but that was in a tent away from public preview and everyone went through the searches; male and females. And it was VERY FAST and VERY efficient. However, another story for another time! On to the Gathering!!!! As the gentleman (which he was as was the female guard - ever so nice! Which I want to say; nothing against them at all; just the silly system!) said as he looked at our Program Guide - "I don't even want to know" but we did and we were eager to get there!

We were able to get on our flight to the East Coast and land in Asheville. We had always landed in Charlotte and driven to the Gathering meeting place in Chimney Rock; but because it would be a week long; and we had no extra time to drive to the Gathering; (yes, we do have husbands and family!!! Ha! a week with hubby doing the dishes and laundry....another post!)

What we have loved about arriving into Charlotte was that bus to the rental cars; always a great amount of fun! And trying to find the freeway west from the Charlotte airport??? Well, another story. After 4 Gatherings one would think we would know the way out of the airport and onto the I-40 or whatever by heart...another story...(once we ended in South Carolina....); but this time (we always have fun, let me remind you!; we laugh a lot and hard!)(So hard, we miss the exits we are to take...); we landed in Asheville; a great airport; we expected to see Rich there as a welcoming committee; but got over that as we tried to get the rental car and find it in the parking lot; finding a place to eat in Hendersonville was a challenge (they do not feed you on the airlines unless you want to part with $10.00) as it was ! gasp! Father's day and at 8pm every place was FULL of familes...but we finally found this steak and sweet potato place; before I fell completely asleep we got into the Geneva only to run into..........

stay tuned!

Hi Jo,

many thanks for the e-mail, I've replied to you - hope you get it!

Thanks for clearing it up for me! I was a wee bit worried!
When me and my boyfriend go to the airports, it always seems to be us that are stopped and searched - I must look dodgy or something! Once I even had to go through one of those bomb detecter units that shoots wind at you in all sorts of weird places!

Keep us informed!
