Ann, Wade, and everybody else in the path of Frances, please stay safe!!! Ann, you get the animals and get in your closet!!! Wade, it might not be as bad for you, but don't go out playing in the rain. Okay? Everybody stay safe and let us know that y'all are okay after Frances passes through. We love y'all!!!!!

We made it through another one...no damage or trees down this time, mostly because all weak trees and limbs were previously blown down by Charley. No flooding for us becuase we are on relatively high ground, but coming into work today was interesting. The lake and river levels were way over the banks, flooding out fields and yards...and levels will be even higher by the end of today.
We boarded up for Frances, as did all of our neighbors, and most of the state. All that plywood is staying in place, as Ivan may be paying us a visit by the end of the week. If the activity of this current hurricane season continues, I may have a generator-run hot tub installed in my closet, as that seems to be where I am spending most of my time. |

Playing in the rain dumped by Frances would have indeed been hazardous....in our area she dumped buckets at a time, enough to drown one careless enough to attempt breathing outside during the rain bands! The winds were another story...Frances alternated periods of hot, dry high winds with periods of drenching rain (I know about the winds because that's when I would be hustling the 5 dogs staying with me...my three plus my daughter's 2...outside for quick breaks). And the skies stayed red during the storm...very eerie.
Well, I can say that the reenactment experiences have finally proven eminently practical for the 21st century. No electricity? No problem! I have candle lanterns and an open fire to cook on, and a plentiful supply of dried foods and clean water laid away. We thought about donning our 18th century gear for the event...but nah...it's still 90+ degrees in the Hurricane State! |

So good to hear from you, Ann! And what a nice contrast from the news I read this morning about the hot tempers  flaring down there. I'm glad you and your hubby can deal with adversity so well  , unlike many who unfortunately aren't equipped with emergency supplies...or such hardy dispositions! (Not that I blame anyone for being testy over such awful conditions in such horrible heat, especially when Mother Nature is being so relentless with yet another blast headed your way!  )
Do keep us posted as much as you can so we know you are a-ok down there!

Lady Ann, what part of Florida are you at? I'm in Jacksonville Beach and Frances, for just giving us the outer winds gave us hell! A huge tree fell in my backyard and the tree beside my house had a good section of it's branches fall, barely missing our htree windows. Our street had alot of felled trees and debree and luckily noone was hurt. I hope everyone around your area is okay.
Good luck Floridians...hopefully, Ivan will swirve off in another direction.

| My sunny disposition during times of adversity...like hurricanes... may be the result of the MacLeod putting, at the top of our supply list, a big fat 'ol box of Whitman's chocolates. I normally do not indulge in my chocolate addiction...but during hurricanes, earthquakes, tornados and other natural disasters I allow myself unlimited access to the Whitman's box. It is cheaper and safer than Prozac, and in my opinion, much more effective. As for the looming Ivan, bring him on! |

And, let's not forget Western North Carolina - the wind didn't amount to much, but the RAIN!!! Asheville has been declared a disaster area ... and it is! The Swannanoa River [the one that runs by Spirits on the River & generated the "falls" inside of the "cave"] and the French Broad River have bpth flooded badly [not to mention numerous smaller creeks & streams!]. Gasoline got mixed in the water & the City of Asheville had to shut off the water supply. Lots of flooded - and closed - roads. I-40 on the Buncombe/McDowell county line was closed this AM due to a mud slide. Darn! I couldn't get to work! I think one lane is open now, so I shall try anew in the morn.
Overall, quite a mess here in Mohicanland! Pass the chocolates, please! |

...and now, the lovely Frances is hitting us in southern New York! It has been raining heavily for about 5 or 6 hours now. We have flood warnings in place. And it is supposed to continue into Friday, I believe.
I would have thought she would be all rained out by now. |

Yes Rich Mohicanland is a mess. I've heard the Chimney Rock area got hit again pretty bad but I haven't seen any photos. Luckily my house is not flooded, so I consider myself very lucky. However, the road and bridge which connect me to the main road are GONE... just washed away! So I'm stuck until the bridge gets fixed. The little stream that washed it away has always remained several feet below the bridge, so I have never had any fear of that stream overflowing. The amount of water is just incredible. At least the power came back on, thankfully!
I fear for our friends at Spirits on the River. The pictures of Swannanoa River Rd are not very encouraging. If you get a chance, go to www.citizen-times.com and check out the reader-submitted photos.
And, pass the choclate, please!

| Ivan flattened Grenada yesterday. 90% of the homes on the island were totally destroyed. Today our local newspaper prominently featured a picture section on the destruction in Grenada...followed by the latest map of Ivan's projected path, putting him directly on my doorstep about 2:00 a.m. on Tuesday morning. Great. 160+mph sustained winds. I'm getting the 5lb. box of chocolates this time. |

Steph and Rich, I saw photos on the Raleigh news of the Swannanoa River and the Lowes that it flooded. Seems there was a guy trapped inside that was later rescued by raft. Is that Lowes not near SOTR? Flip and the gang were the first ones I thought of when I read about that. You guys stay away from driving through that water even if it seems shallow - I saw several small cars swamped right after Charley, thinking it couldn't be that deep. When we flooded after Dennis/Dennis/Floyd it tok several days for the flood waters to crest, so it may be bad a few more days. Of course my flat lands don't act exactly like your hilly lands  when it come to water runoff. If you guys hear about Chimney Rock ro SOTR please let us know!

WEll, my thoughts and prayers are with you all in Florida!! and the states north of that as well; unfortunately, out here in California, we ONLY hear about Florida; not any other rain swamped states as the hurricanes move onto land...
Marcia is ok; just heard from her; for all of you that know her...
Stay well the rest of you; can't imagine Ashville a diaster area!!! Is Lowe's in that commerical lot of stores near SOTR? Seems my sisters and I took a long walk around the parking lot; we got to SOTR early that day as we didn't get lost (or we got lucky!)...wow, at least earthquakes won't usually let you know there're rumbling through....

Just talked to Vicki at the Geneva in Chimney Rock and they have just eeked by with no damage. She was worried about the Tiki Bar, as were WE, being that it is situated closest to the river. The town of Lake Lure lowered the lake by two feet prior to the rains in anticipation of flooding. Even so, the waters were plunging over the dam, but enough to avert extensive damage. Vicki said she prayed all Tuesday night to be spared and prayed all Wednesday night thanking God they were.

I am a diabetic, so I will be dead from the chocolate intake long before the size of my thighs impedes my exit from the closet. Jim, I'm going to remind you of your words in about 4 months when you start whining about the cold and snow again.
Ann, you piqued my curiosity and I looked up the official schedule of hurricane names. I find it interesting that the names stop at "W." I wonder why? For typhoons, which are the Pacific version of hurricanes, they continue all the way to "Z."
Another item of interest... in 2006, Hurricane Joyce will come along... hopefully she won't be too nasty. Also, they repeat the list every few years. For example, the 2004 names will be reused in 2010, except for any that get retired. I'm not certain what the criteria is for retiring a hurricane name... perhaps its intensity or damage amount? |
