Ditto that! Here in AZ, our monsoon season has kicked in full force, but I know that can't even compare to what you all are going through.
Our thoughts and prayers will be with you all. Keep safe! Caitlin |

This has to be short...I am finally back in the office after a 4 day "holiday" to deal with Charley. Winter Park took a direct hit from the storm. We still have no power and no water, and our yard is a massive obstacle course, with huge trees down everywhere. Fortunately, not a single tree touched our house...our neighbors have huge oaks IN their house. Many roofs and cars were crushed, streets are blocked with trees and debris and it will take months to clean up the mess. But being old hands at 18th century living, we are doing fine. The only real difficulty is dealing with the heat...high 90s during the day, while we are hauling tree limbs, and mid 80s at night, when we try to sleep. No refrigeration, and ice is almost impossible to find, so you just can't cool down. I'm just thankful I don't have to wear wool skirts and a corset in the 21st century!
Back to work...today's task is drafting mountains of FEMA contracts! |

Lady Ann! Thank God you are OK, and that your house was not seriously damaged. I can only imagine what this must be like, and I most definitely would rather deal with our cold and snow than what you are dealing with right now.
Good luck as you clean up and attempt to return to normal!
I saw a heartwrenching story on the news last night about people, many of them lonely, elderly widows, who refuse to evacuate because they cannot take their pets or horses with them. To these people, their animals are their family and their companions and they will not desert them.
They interviewed one elderly lady who rode out the storm huddled in a tiny closet in her home, holding her black lab and her cat close to her. They survived unscathed, the closet held... while the rest of her home blew apart around her. Dear God!
Cannot something be done to allow people to bring their pets with them and leave them somewhere safe? I know how horrible it would be for me to have to leave mine behind, wondering if they would be alive when I came back. I can't imagine it! |

My 3 dogs, two cats and I spent the duration of Hurricane Charley holed up in a closet I had reinforced for the occasion, listening to the winds howl outside (it really does sound like an oncoming freight train) and ominous ground-shaking crashes as trees came down. The MacLeod, on the other hand, spent the storm either out on the front porch or (believe it or not) outside in the yard, coming back every so often to my closet to ask me if I wanted to come out and watch the really amazing storm with him! Right. I've already lived through one direct hit hurricane and they are not to be trifled with. My animals and I will stay in the closet, thank you very much! |

Hi, Ann. I saw Karen on Sunday and we were talking about you - wondering whether you and your hubby weathered the storm ok. Thanks for letting us all know that you're safe and sound. Your description of huddling in the closet, hearing the freight-train winds, the MacLeod making trips back & forth from outside...sounds much like what goes on here during our tornado seasons! Good luck with the FEMA red tape and getting those trees cleaned up.

Ann, I am so sorry to hear that y'all got hit so hard. It's a pain to be without electricity and water. The main thing is that you are alright!!! On Saturday morning, we were on our way from Kissimmee to Apopka to see some friends, and it was pretty bad. Alot of businesses were closed because there wasn't any electricity. Alot of the signal lights weren't working. They had police offcers directing traffic at some of the lights, but at others, we just had to go when we thought that it was safe enough. Let's all hope that the residents of Florida get back on their feet real soon!!! We love you and please keep us updated.

First off, let me say that I'm glad to know you are safe.
Your story of your husband standing outside reminds me of what happened during our huge monsoon storm here this last Monday night. The thunder was just a constant rubble - it never let up and the lightening was striking every second and there was my husband outside during it all video taping everything. At one point he even jumped back and let out a yelp. Nope, he can be the daredevil. The kids, the dog and I pulled all the drapes and practically hid under the table.
I hope things get back in order for you soon! Caitlin |

It must be a guy thing -- if my husband sees a really good thunderstorm developing, he'll jump in the car and drive TOWARD it, and will be very disappointed if he doesn't manage to catch up with it. His dream vacation, which I'm sure he'll take someday, would be chasing tornadoes in the Midwest. Ann, I'm very glad to hear that you and yours are safe, despite the perhaps somewhat risky behavior on the part of one of them! |

What's wrong with chasing storms?!!! Tornado chasing is one of my dream vacations, but if I ever go, I'll have to take some teasing from family & friends over it. They still don't get why people would go to a Mohican Gathering as a vacation! Who is really a breed apart?!! (I guess I am, since I don't spend my vacations at Wally World!)
But I digress...glad to hear that you Floridians have weathered the storm. Let's hope that there won't be another nearby any time soon. |

Only thing worse than Men in Storms...Men with Chainsaws. The winds hadn't even died down before most men in our neighborhood were out with their chainsaws, and they haven't stopped since. The good part is that cleanup is quicker...the bad part is that here in Florida, the majority of deaths and injuries attributed to Charley are due to mishaps with chainsaws. Every guy has to have one...and no branch is too small to need cutting! The MacLeod was quite excited about the opportunity to bring out his brand new, just out of the box monster to start chewing up the oaks littering our back yard. He got all set up to work (this took about an hour), poised himself for his first cut, flipped the switch...and nothing happened. Then he figured that the garage plug was bad, so he rolled up the 200 foot orange power cord, took out the bathroom window screen and crawled in the window to use that plug...then crawled out the window and hurriedly rolled up the cord before the neighbors could see him trying to use an ELECTRIC chain saw in a neighborhood that hasn't had power for 5 days! I watched the entire process, giggling to myself the entire time...the sheepish look on his face was worth the entire hurricane experience! |

A week's worth of laughter for the wifie..... Priceless!
Bows to the MacLeod for giving us all a good giggle!

Thanks for the laugh Ann!!!! That IS Priceless!!!!
So glad to hear you and Bill are safe and without massive damage!
I had a landlord once that I accused of using his chainsaw for therapy - Every time I heard it, which was often as he owned several houses in the neighborhood I was in, I thought "Things must not be going well, poor Dave is having Chainsaw Therapy again!" I would have to run out and LITERALLY guard my bushes and trees!!!!
Nancy - I'm with ya on the stormchasing!!! I LOVE a thunderstorm...sort of...kind of...until wellllll...yea, yea I mean I love 'em!!!

That was funny, Ann! Did you tape record all of this?
Chainsaw? Oh my, thank goodness my husband hasn't found that joy. He does like his leaf blower though. You'd think we wouldn't have any more desert left around here with the way he goes around the house with that thing. We do have the cleanest yard in the block though! |

Dear Ann, That is very funny. I don't think I've ever heard of an "electric" chainsaw. I've got my gas powered one in the back shed all sharp and ready to go. I'm very thankful that we only get the tail end of hurricanes. Usually, just lots of rain. I'm glad you two are ok. Donna |
