Someone mentioned Fort Loudoun as a possibllity for the next Gathering. I was not familiar with it. Recently I ran across their web site, and it looks interesting. It is probably a little too far from the other activities. Take a look, though.

Agreed, Fitz ... a little too far for a Gathering activity, but it sure would make a good starter/finisher for anyone coming or going through that way!
As for me, I had no idea it was as close to me as it is ... it's now bookmarked in my wee wittle head as a place to visit ... and, soon! |

I saw that on their schedule there is a "18th Century Trade Faire" on September 7 & 8. This sounds like a good time for a road trip, and since I have never seen the fort, well. . . Sounds like a plan! And the best part is Fort Loudoun is F&I.
Disclaimer: I do not have any idea what the "18th Century Trade Faire" is nor how good it is, so travel at your own risk.

rich its a nice park and you can spend the entire day there, looking at the fort and the museum plus right down the road is the birthplace of sequoya and a museum . stan

Have you thought about a tour of Pennsylvania's F&I War sites...Jumonville Glen, Ft. Necessity, Ft. Duquesne/Ft. Pitt, Braddock's Battlefield, Ft. Ligonier, Kittanning, Bushy Run Battlefield? They are all near enough to each other, laid out right, that they could all be seen in a few days. Old Bedford Village (check the website www.OldBedfordVillage.org) would be a good place to headquarter for some of it and the site of Ft. Bedford (Raestown) is very near. I am on the Board of Directors at OBV and perhaps a F&I encampment could be put together for you. Pennsylvania is where it all started, you know.

I am planning on being there at least for Saturday. I figure that will just about do it for my wife. I told her we could take some Whitney blankets and a tarp and stay the night, and I got this long silence.

I just returned from Fort Loudoun. That is one trip you need to make. The country side, the fort, the setting, the weather were perfect. Rows and rows of suttlers and blanket traders, regulars, Indians, a cannon, and a lot of really good people. I finally got to meet some of the people I talk to over the phone. It's way too far for the Gathering. I went the long way through the mountains from Greenville, SC and it took from 7:45 until around 2:00 to get there. But we did stop for a while to help some bikers pull one back up the side of a mountain. We stayed until it closed to the visitors. I think the fun was just starting. We came back by Knoxville on I-75 and I-40. That was MUCH faster. I thought about going to Martins Station Sunday, but we were sort of tired from the ride. I will put that off a while. I gotta find a way to get up there next year in period dress!

We just returned from Ft. Loudon as well. We had a good time, saw suttlers we knew from Alafia Rendezvous in FL. Look forward to seeing them again in Jan. Met some Cherokee folks at the Arts/Crafts show down the road from Ft. Loudon. They are interested in the Gathering, going to email them this website. They were demonstrating Cherokee life- cooking, beading, fingerweaving, etc. Stephanie, we saw somebody you had your photo taken with at Spirits of the River!! Guess who?

Ft. Loudon would be fun, but Old Bedford Village is alot closer and Roger K. is good people.

Not to mention the fact that we can do live fire with ball, in a sort of Mini-Fort Freddie style competition during the off-season.
