In "The Attack on Martha" by William Anderson[Posted June 26, 2002 on the mises.org website] the following statement was made:
"No doubt, (Martha)Stewart's scalp would look mighty fine on the pole of a career prosecutor seeking political fame or future legal fortune."
Since Mohicanites are perhaps the best living experts on matters of scalping, what are your thoughts regarding the desirability of Martha's mane?
(Disclaimer: I wish Martha Stewart well. The question of whether the "Decorating Diva" would provide a government official with an interesting "decoration" is to be understood as Mohicanland chit chat.)

Well, I know little about the current mess Martha Stewart apparently finds herself in - too busy scouring the backwoods of NC looking for Osama - but I know this ...
Her scalp is not meant to hang on my coup stick ...
Perhaps, the scalp of say, Julia Roberts, would be a bit more attractive ... |

Poor Martha Stewart ... the woman everyone loves to hate. Regardless of her quirks & reputation for dotting her i's & crossing her t's in words like bitch, the truth is that Martha Dearest is resented for her success. She built her emporium from nothing, & she did it literally from her (no doubt, well set) kitchen table.
Anderson's right. Stewart's scalp means a career boost for some savvy, opportunistic prosecutor. She's a scapegoat. Her alleged crime? Insider information. Big deal. That's the story of money - if you've got lots of $$$$ to invest in a company you also expect to know how healthy that company looks. Martha Stewart's accountant saw some unusual selling of the company's stock. He called Martha. Martha called the CEO & asked what's going on. Told the company's product, which had received glowing initial write-ups, was not getting an anticipated FDA approval, Martha decided to sell. (The untouchables in the financial world call that 'smart money.')
She's hardly got a monopoly on obtaining information. That's what parties on Martha's Vineyard are for! She's also not entirely on the receiving end of a 'head's up' alert. She signed a potentially lucrative exclusive deal with KMart shortly before KMart tanked.
She's getting heat because she's an easy mark. After all, everyone loves to hate Martha!

Funny that someone from the (geographical) country that created Latin should be upset with Latin taglines. (Funny only -- not stupid or foolish, OK?)
Most latin phrases used in American or British English are left-overs from a time (19th century and before) when educated people knew English, French, and Latin in addition to their native language.
It MAY (in some circles) be considered slightly rude to put these quotes in without a translation, unless the author assumes that most of the audience will recognize it.
If you'd like to look up some of these, there are a number of sites on the internet that help. Try searching for the phrase "Latin translations" on your web browser.
Meanwhile, here's one for "Nemo Me Impune Lacessit":
This latin term, often associated with mourning bands and Police Memorial Day, means literally; "No one injures (attacks) me with impunity". The motto of the Order of the Thistle. It was first used on the coins of James VI. of Scotland (James I. of England). How it became associated with the badge mourning band is unclear, however, those of Scottish and Irish descent, who held positions in the ranks of police departments over the years, may well have been the influence.

Correct wpmacleod, I like your style. The phrase is also the motto of the Black Watch (aka 42nd Royal Highland Regiment, the old 43rd Regiment of Foote). Since I am a police officer as well as an F&I Living Historian (Sgt. Duncan Munro of the 'Black Watch'), I felt it was appropriate. Since the 'Black Watch' is an ancient and well known regiment of the British Army, I thought that at least three-quarters of the readers would recognize it, no insult was intended.

I seem to recall back in 1990 that a fellow by the name of Neil Bush was involved in an S&L scandal but nothing ever happened to him.Seems that son after his daddy started a war(I went)and everybody forgot about it.It seems that in the USA who you know or are related to determines as to wether you'll get charged with a crime or not.

What is most reprehensible about the continuing public persecution of Martha Stewart is that it is political smoke and mirrors: The government can't (read "won't") catch up with the big fish associated with Enron, who seriously damaged us, but are doing a big "Look, see? We're doing our job because we've nabbed someone famous!"
Strike two for gummint boys: Martha saved $50,000 in the stock deal -- for her, that's pocket change. She stands to be fined a maximum of $150,000 -- I'll bet over $1 million of our taxes has already been spent in advancement of this {expletive deleted} prosecutor's career.

Martha Stewart is a businesswoman and celebrity. She became very successful in a business involving home decorating, craft projects, and similar things. Her company publishes a magazine "Martha Stewart's Living". She is more well-known in the United States than she is elsewhere. Here is a link to a recent story about her.

Ilse,
My participation in the Board has been limited due to extensive travel, but I have found a way to log on from the road. I am currently in the area near Washington DC where a sniper had been active (he has apparently been caught).
I am curious as to what got you interested in this thread, since you had not previously known about Martha Stewart? As a relatively new member, it is interesting to me when a posting of mine gets a large response (I also got a large response to "Political Confessions--If you Dare" also under the Lion's Den)

Thou hast quoted me out of context. If you'll note, I first explained that it is considered impolite to put foreign phrases in your writing unless either (1) your audience is expected to know them, or (2) you give a translation. For the curious, I added a source for and a translation of the latin quote that first prompted Ongewasgone to object to their usage.
