The 1995 film Rob Roy is one of my favorite films. Lots of action. Great scenery. Many good quotes. Stars Liam Neeson as Robert Roy MacGregor. Tim Roth as Archibald Cunningham was a real hoot.

It WAS a good film, wasn't it?! I really enjoyed it...

But... Liam Neeson's Scottish accent sucked BIG TIME!!! There are PLENTY of good SCOTS actors who could have done this role - and made it sound more authentic. I know that L.N is a great actor... but, I'd have preferred someone else who could 'talk like a native'... After all, it's ABOUT a Scot - so it doesn't seem unreasonable to get someone with a Scottish accent, to take the role!

I know... Sean Connery was a tad too old for the part... MORE'S THE PITY... *sigh*... But his SON could have done it - and done a good job! He normally sounds English but... he can do a first rate Scottish accent (having gone to school in a very select private school in the North of Scotland, and having spent many summer holidays here.) And he's a VERY GOOD actor!

Ah well... can't have REAL HISTORICAL FACTS (not!) AND A REAL SCOTTISH ACCENT ALL IN THE SAME MOVIE, I guess... *sigh*...

Still... as 'entertainment' goes, it was a great movie!

The accent part didn't bother me.
In fact, I did not even notice Liam Neeson's accent lacking.

On the subject of "Scots"- James Doohan, Star Treks' Mr. Scott, was diagnosed with alzheimers disease this week.

If you were Scottish, you'd notice he talked in his native 'Irish brogue', and not with a Scottish accent! I guess it would equate to an American watching a movie about Daniel Boone - and Daniel talking with a German Accent... ?????

But... Liam is easy on the eyes, and has a lovely smile...

Ahhhh yes, I HEARD about James Doohan when I was over at the Gathering... SAD!! Just terribly sad! I can't wait until we CAN 'change the laws of physics'! This condition needs to be ERADICATED! He and his family are facing years of misery... and nothing can be done about it. How awful for him...

I was watching some of the 1932 version of LOTM last night, and there was no attempt made to fake the French accents. One French regular serving with Montcalm did have a decidedly Southern accent, though. I suppose he was with the Languedoc regiment.

I think I'll have to get a copy of this version of LOTM - and watch it again. It's many years since I saw it. And I'd probably get a lot more out of it, now...

I tend not to get upset or irate at factual misrepresentations or mistakes anymore. I take a Hollywood movie to be EXACTLY WHAT IT IS - 'entertainment', and not a historical document. But I always feel a little... irritated, when Hollywood doesn't even TRY to find an actor with the appropriate accent. If we aren't going to have the proper language used, ie. German, Russian, Spanish, WHATEVER, with subtitles, then... at least they could use actors who have the needed ACCENT, at least. Give us a FLAVOUR of the true picture...

And it's not like it's DIFFICULT! There's lots of actors with the appropriate accents. It's a SMALL thing to ask, I think...

But - what do I know????

And THAT is why God made Daniel Day-Lewis! Watch him - and LISTEN to him - in The Crucible, and LOTM, and GONY, and The Age of Innocence, and the films he made with Jim Sheridan (The Boxer, In the Name of the Father) and all of the other films he's made. Lord knows, our beloved DD-L sounds NOTHING like Bill the Butcher in "real life," nor does he sound anything like Nathaniel Poe but when the role calls for it, Daniel is more than capable of delivering a superb performance in EVERY WAY - including mastering ANY accent! BRAVO, DANIEL!

Arguably the greatest swordfight ever filmed. Tim Roth always makes such an unforgettable villian!
