I am starting to reenact for French and Indian and Revolutionary War. I am wandering about shelters. Did they use Lean-to's at that time? What about diamond flies?

Skin that en' pilgrim and i get ye' another one.

The type of shelter you would use would depend on the type of impression you do. There is a great deal of documentation available for regular military, ranger, militia, civilan para-military, native, etc. You can even use on-line sources to aid you, most of the folks out there have pretty good sites.

You may want to order a catalog from "Track of the Wolf, Inc." They sell a number of historically based tent designs including:
Whelen style Lean-To shelter
British infantryman's 1750-1780 era bell back tent
Primitive Lean-To(based on a french trappers design)
Revolutionary war A-frame tent
1750-1880 bell back tent
Civil war era U.S. army wall tents
1840-1865 U.S. Army Officers tent
1860 civil war enlisted man's shelter
Revolutionary war era marquis tent

The catalog includes illustrations that could give you an idea of how to construct the tents on your own as well as selling complete kits.
The catalog also includes: Gunsmithing supplies and services, muzzleloaders, tomahawks, knives, clothing, tradegoods, books, buttons, blankets, books, etc...
It can get pretty spendy but it's a good way to get an idea of what's out there.
I think the catalog is about $10, it's over 400 pages and chock full of illustrations and photos.
You can either order from www.trackofthewolf.com or call 1-763-633-2550. Even if you never order from them it can be a great reference tool.
I'm sure there are some other folks with similar suggestions, good luck!
