Poll Question:
Well, you can never plan too early for a Gathering, so here is a poll for anyone that may be planning on attending the 2006 Gathering.
Which month is better for you to be able to attend?

Choices:

3rd week in June
3rd week in July

I looked at June 2005 (can it really be 2005?!!). The "third week"--do you mean the week of June 12-18, or June 19-25, which is the third FULL week? I haven't checked for 2006 yet, if the next Gathering is in 2 years...

I'm asking because June is still school time for those of us up North! So later is better, in this case. I'm not sure how many are affected by the school year, but it was the reason I couldn't attend at least 2 gatherings!

Just my 2 cents...!

A GATHERING IN 2006???! WOO-HOO!!! COUNT ME IN!!!

As for the date, the third week of either June OR July will be just fine with me! One of the main reasons I could not attend the Gathering this year, was that it took place during the FOURTH week of the month - and my company always has their monthly Board of Directors' meeting on the fourth Thursday of each month & since I'm "THE ONE" who is in charge of that, I couldn't get away!

Very much looking forward to attending in 2006! And let's start working on DD-L to put this event on HIS personal calendar, as well!

Okay, I'm confused. Is it Gathering 2005 or 2006?

The next Gathering will be in 2006. Trying to give some of the gatherers a rest. I could go every year, but some live very far away, so we decided that two years from now will be best.

Nancy,
It looks like the third week in June 2006, will be from the
22nd-25th. I'm not counting the entire week, only the four days that we will be there. When does school get out up there. We are usually out by June 5th, sometimes earlier, but then again, we don't have to make up the snow days that y'all have to make up. I hope that June works out for you!!!

Given the humidity in NC in June, wouldn't it be worse in July?

Well... Diana and I were talking about another Gathering and this was one of the issues that we talked about in regards to planning another one. A few people we talked to actually prefer the idea of an AUTUMN Gathering for a change.

There are many folks who find Table Rock and Chimney Rock Park a bit of a... challenge. It's ESPECIALLY challenging when the climbing involves hot weather, with sun beating down. A few of us thought that a Gathering in the Autumn would make walking and trekking a little easier. Speaking for myself, I think I'd be giving both these activities a miss, if it were July - and I'd hate that. As mentioned, humidity can make walking difficult. For us that are very fair skinned, walking in the HOT SUN is very difficult, even with lashings of sun screen on.

Folks who have done these activities before, have given them a miss this year. Some were heard to say that they didn't want to expend the effort needed to do it in the heat and sun, when they've done it before.

An Autumn trek would make things so much easier. Can we consider this?

The problem with Autumn for a Gathering is that school is in session, and thus many of our Gatherers would not be able to attend, as they either have children in school or are teachers. Given the high percentage that fall into these categories, we are having a hard time even trying to find a date in the summer that will accomodate the most people, as the window is so narrow. Personally, I would LOVE doing a Gathering in cooler temperatures, but not if I have to forgo the pleasure of Gathering with the Whitneys, the Goldens, Nancy (Dances with Beagles), the Harbisons, all the others who would have to skip because of a teaching schedule or having children in school.

Claude and I would have to miss an autumn Gathering as well, unless we had it the one week I'm off. As warm and humid as both June and July are, summer seems to be the best fit for everyone as far as scheduling goes.

I share Kate's concern about the heat and humidity (I wouldn't even consider any other vacation that involved outdoor activity in the summer sun!), and understand also others' concern about the school year. So I voted for June, but I'm so happy to be given another chance to attend a Gathering that I'll show up at whatever place and time the majority chooses.

What about the middle/end of May? I'm not familiar with NC weather conditions then, but school would be out and it shouldn't be too hot yet.

Hey Caitlin

School is not quite out mid-to-end May for us here in the south. My sense of it is.... is that June/July is going to be the best bet.

Hate to jump in when the planning is so well under way....but....some other thoughts bounced around between some others of us were possibly having a mini-Fall-gathering on the off years of a BIG gathering for those that can get away, enjoy the fall foliage (breathtaking if timed right), and enjoy some cooler treks to the big hikes (CRP, Table Rock) - no guests, no special events, just movie sites and fall colors. I usually go every fall anywho so perhaps a few could meet up a fall or two for some site hiking and save our coins for the BIG EVENT every other year (which would be WONDERFUL in cooler months, but should be when the most folks can make it - they are what make a gathering)!

P.S. Halloween in CR is a blast! THERE ARE ghost stories to be told!

Just a thought! I'm sure there are more out there. All opinions ARE welcome!!!!!

GG Hope to get some pics and tales (involving blow-outs and such) up later this weekend - must.......rest............!

GG,
An autumn mini gathering sounds great. I wasn't for sure if I could really hold out for two years anyway. I know that Kim would want to be there too. The cooler temps would be very nice. Let's try and make sure to do that next year!!!

One thing to keep in mind when scheduling an event is the Mohican Games day. If it is a given that we will have the Games at the next Gathering, then we will have to have them at a time when the FBR does not have one of their own events scheduled. For instance, the weekend of July 9-11 is a major shoot for the FBR. We could not have had the Games there at that time. They have a shoot on the second Saturday of each month, and a championship event around the first of October each year.

As things stand now, either June or July works for us. Fall would be wonderful (I've never been to NC during the autumn colors), but I would also hate to miss people who couldn't make it during the school year.

Well... by Gathering in the fall, I actually DID MEAN Gathering during the Fall break. Indeed, *I* wouldn't want to lose Gatherers who can only make it outwith school time, either! But... having gotten a terrible sunburn during the Games Day and knowing that other folks DON'T do trekking and climbing well during hot, sunny days, (and indeed, didn’t do Chimney Rock or Table Rock this Gathering for that very reason), I wanted to bring the subject up.

However, if a 'mini-gathering' can be done during the fall, (and I know from experience that it CAN), then that seems like a really good compromise... Fall in them there mountains is SUPERB!!!

Since we are a year closer to the Gathering, I thought that maybe the people that haven't voted yet as to which month would be better for them, could do that now. That way, we can start planning for 2006.

Wow this is a 'oh my' moment for me.

Last year I went to Gatlinburg in Octocber for one whole day. Was supposed to be 2 days but got cut short because of my traveling cohort. Anyway on the drive back (8 hours one way thank you) we made a pack to come back to the Smokey Mountains at least once a year. Not sure if she will make it but I had planned to. Already had a wonderful cabin scouted out just outside Gatlinburg.

Ok back on topic. I think a fall gathering is a great idea because of the heat factor not to mention the 'skeeters and other biting bugs. What if it was planned around Columbus day and was a long weekend? Would that work for school folks?

If in the summer I think 3rd week in June is good.

Is anyone still planning on going to the area this fall?

Sunshine
