Here is today's LOTM trivia question.
What scene did Michael Mann consider to be the most pivotal point of the film? Was it....

1.The elk hunt scene
2.Hawkeye's reaction to Cora at the Cameron massacre scene
3.The kiss scene
4.The meeting between Magua and Montcalm
5.The massacre scene where Magua finally gets revenge on Colonel Munro
6.The waterfall scene where Cora urges Hawkeye to save himself
7.The Huron village scene where Duncan gives his life to save the others
8.The Uncas vs. Magua scene
9.The Ching vs. Magua scene
10.The ending scene with Ching, Hawkeye, and Cora

GG,
You do know that if you go with #6 and IF it is the right answer, then Theresa gets the point since she was first. Are you sure you still want to go with #6?
Remember, I am very flexible with this game if anybody wants to change their answers.

Okay, I can't give anybody any points, because no one guesed the right answer. I am going to post the question again, only this time there will only be three answers available. That means that somebody has got to get it right.

What scene did Michael Mann consider to be the most pivotal point of the film? Was it....

1.The elk hunt scene
2.Hawkeye's reaction to Cora at the Cameron massacre scene
3.The kiss scene

Remember, the first one to post the correct answer gets the point.

Kaylynn,
Just a wild guess... Is the most pivotal point in the film (according to director Michael Mann) The Kiss?

Would the correct answer be available on the director's cut DVD version, with the commentary turned on? Wouldn't know first hand, I have a region 2 DVD version.

Oh well, thanks!

I wanted to take a stab at this yesterday but I was at work & didn't take the time to post an answer; but even before the number of choices was reduced, my guess was #3: "The Kiss."

I recall reading the fact that Michael Mann re-shot this scene repeatedly, until he got it just the way he wanted it - but I've also heard that he did that with many scenes in LOTM! In regards to this particular scene, I believe one of his comments was that "The Kiss" between Hawkeye & Cora "wasn't naked enough" (taking that to mean he was looking for raw passion from them, even though they were fully clothed) & shooting went on until well past midnight.

Poor Madeleine Stowe...she had to spend hours & hours kissing DD-L! I've said it before & I'll say it again: I don't know how much they paid her to do this movie, but just for the opportunity to shoot this one scene, I would have done the whole thing for FREE!

Theresa,
You get the point today. You were quicker than G.G.
Even though the way that I phrased the question was a little misleading. I asked the question from memory (something I should never do!!!) instead of looking at the book, and it didn't say "the most pivotal scene in the movie." It said "a pivotal point in the movie." But, it was the only scene in the book that mentioned it being pivotal, so the answer will have to be the Cameron massacre scene.

Vee, I got the answer from the biography about DDL by Laura Jackson.
Here is a little excerpt from the book.

Michael Mann saw the Cameron massacre scene as being a pivotal point in the film. How best to handle the resulting confrontation between the two leading characters was a matter of deep debate between himself and Daniel. It was only one twelve word line of dialogue - the important issue was how Daniel said it. Mann described it as a moment of killing rage. Echoing an observation of actor Jack Sheperd's, he maintains what he discovered at this time that there is a unique kind of fiery anger inside Daniel which cannot be called up from the outside, but which emerges unexpectedly and entirely of it's own volition.
Both actor and director agreed that the scene required controlled rage, but neither wanted the tired old muscle-flexing-in-the-jaw method of delivering it. In the end after several takes, as Mann had inwardly relied upon, Daniel's spontaneity suddenly took over. Finally, after the umpteenth take, he turned and strode downhill towards Cora. As he reached her, it was clear that he was applying great restraint in not laying violent hands on her. His eyes, often romantically described as smoldering a hole in wood, conveyed an undisguised and incandescent fury. It was original and believable and for Mann summed up best his determination to cast Day-Lewis at all costs. Specially pinpointing that particular moment he has since insisted, "That's why I wanted him to play Hawkeye. To elevate this whole movie, story, novel to immediacy."

Here is the score:

GG-1

Diane and Vee, hang in there. I still have plenty of questions.
BTW, I would have guessed "The Kiss" too!!!

Madeline Stowe was so exhausted on the last day of filming, so Daniel did something for her. What did he do?

1. He brushed her hair
2. He massaged her feet
3. He applied her makeup
4. He brought her food to her
5. He helped her get dressed

I know......poor Madeline

Kaylynn,
I LOVE trivia questions! DDL applied her make-up and did a good job, according to Maddy, if I recall the article correctly. I have no intentions to rain on your great trivia thing going on here...this is so fun! But here's one for you!so you can have fun too: Uncas carries Hawkeye's blanket roll when they all leave the fort; Dad carries the rifle for him. Later in the movie however Uncas only has one bed role. Where does he lose the second one; or maybe he decided it was too heavy....
Consider this "extra credit" as we wait for the next question from Kaylynn!
Loved that book quote; it was great of you to take the time to write it for us.

That's the answer, although Jo has already let the cat out of the bag.
Just kidding Jo.
As for your trivia question, I don't have a clue!!! But I bet that Theresa could answer it. I might have to go and watch LOTM again so that I can answer it.

Okay, here is the excerpt about the makeup. Just read and dream girls.

Stowe has fond memories of when, on virtually the last day of filming, she was literally too tired to put on her own make-up. Dan, exhausted himself, applied her mascara and eye liner for her, whilst wearily telling the assistant director, (urgently urging his presence back on set) that he was going as fast as he could.

Okay Jo, I am going to try and answer your trivia question. I watched LOTM again, because it has been a long time since I have seen it, and I notice that Uncas has one blanket roll on one shoulder and has the other one on the other shoulder when they leave the fort. During the masaacre scene, I noticed that he only has one blanket roll. I think that he handed it back over to Hawkeye, even though I never could tell if Hawkeye had a blanket roll. In one scene, it looked like he did.
