In your opinion are human beings the dominant species of the planet because they've won this leg of the evolutionary race or is it because they are made in the image of God and are here to reap the benefits of the planet he created for them?

Depends. Taken in the religious context, we are made in God's image but are not divine. Our souls will live on, but whether damned or at one with God again, remains to be seen for each of us.
Scientifically, we are OF God in the sense that we are all made of stardust. For that matter, so is the monkey. As are all living things.
However, "I defy ANYONE to say that General LEE is descended from a ape".

Physically, we are members of the animal kingdom, but I believe that only mankind has the ability to do good or evil. The choices we make in this life, will be answerable in the next. God continues to test us, both as a people and individually, because He knows our true potential. Just my thoughts on the topic...
