I read this one a while back and really enjoyed it. It's exciting in a frontiersy sort of way.

"Over the course of three decades, Sven Hedin travelled the ancient Silk Road, discovered long lost cities, mapped previously uncharted rivers, and saw more of "the roof of the world" than any European before him. This epic memoir captures the splendour of now-vanished civilizations, the excitement of unearthing ancient monuments, the chilling terrors of snow clogged mountain passes, and the parching agony of the desert. A worldwide bestseller in the 1920's, it today introduces a new generation to a man of exceptional daring and accomplishment. The book is illustrated with 160 of Hedin's own drawings.
Sven Hedin was born in Sweden, educated in Germany, and spent much of his life roaming Central Asia. He spoke seven languages, published more than fifty books, and won honors and acclaim around the globe. He died in 1952 at the age of 87."
