The book I'm thinking of is more an American Revolutionary War novel set near the end of hostilities in the Ohio River Valley. It was written by a dentist from Pennsylvania who by happenstance had come into possesion of a notebook belonging to one of his ancestors that had been secreted in a picture frame and was saved from a rubbish fire. That dentist wrote three books based on that notebook and before long was paying the highest income tax of anyone in these United States.
The novel is "Betty Zane" and yes, that dentist wrote a lot of cowboy stories. In the introduction, Zane Grey talks of hearing these stories as a child and he writes a fast paced, gripping yarn. I don't know how historically accurate it is but it sure is fun.
"Betty Zane" and "The Spirit of the Border" (has more to do with Lewis Wetzel) are available at http://gutenberg.net (obligatory JFC content: all 5 Leatherstocking books are available along with other gems like "The Lake Gun") but "The Last Trail" is only available in paperback or try your local library.
