Old Betsy, my desktop PC started doing the "Wonderful One Horse Shay" thing a year and some ago, but with a little nursing hung in there.

The situation became more critical recently, and with a considerable amount of dithering, I decided to get a laptop as space is at a premium here, and I have visions of going 'wireless' at some point and wandering about the house computing once I come to terms with the security issues.

(I should note that I'm not exacty an "early adapter" when it comes to things technical. I have yet to use, much less own, a "cell" phone.)

But it appears that these things come with DVD/CD drives these days, and feeling self-indulgent, I said what the heck.

I only have a handful of DVD's for my own use, and I think it's unlikely that I'll ever have the patience to watch an entire movie on this thing, but of course my first trial was LOTM.

After hopping about a bit, I watch the "burial ground" scene, and was quite surpised. I never saw the film in the theater--only on TV. In spite of the small picture area on the laptop, it is very intimate--more so than TV, and I was much more aware of the nuances.

I think it has something to do with the physical proximity: The screen is at about the same distance as you'd hold a book, and has a similar feel of immediacy.

I occasionally watch DVD's on my desktop and like that intimate feeling as well. I imagine a portable DVD player would give you the same effect.

Never watched it on a laptop, but I used to use Lainey's big 21" computer monitor when getting screen captures & the like ... The DVD, to me, did appear better on the computer than on the TV. Intimacy might indeed be the byword! It kind of sucked you right in to the scene ...
