Hey Rich,
Headin' out in the morning and should be in Chimney Rock mid-afternoon/early evening. I checked out the weather for the area as well and it DOES look nice for the weekend. I've yet to be at Chimney Rock without a beautiful blue sky. Soooo looking forward to this. See ya at/with the French Broads!

Theresa, Stephanie, and Caitlin & Jeff, Thank you for the well wishes. You've just given me some of those warm feelings I get when I'm with all you gatherers. I'm glad Rich gave that lousy weather report. It helps me not feel as bad not being there. Here's hoping for a great 2004 event! I hope Rich and Elaine get enough of their well deserved break this year so they'll be raring to go for next year. Bye for now.... |
Been onboard since 1998.

Don't worry, Donna ... I'm raring to go with the 2004 Edition right now!!! And ... as for this year, it's still raining. Our Cherokee Adventure looks like it would have been pretty much a rainout!
Theresa ... you be safe! Weather ought to be nice soon ... You know, every year at the Gathering, at Chimney Rock Park, it's been gorgeous! Wouldn't have been this year. But, I've a feeling it'll be blue skies for you tomorrow!
See you at FBR! |

Yowsah!!!
Has the weather taken a turn for the better around here, or what!? Absolutely gorgeous out there right now for what would have been our Dupont Forest day ... I think? Forecast is the same for tomorrow!!! And, actually, it turned out to be not too bad on Thursday, after that AM downpour, so this Gathering would have turned out nicely, weather-wise, after all ... Opening day, at CRP, would have been a sure downer, though ...
Yes, Steph, see you tomorrow!
Gee, it's nice out ... COOL, low humidity, not a cloud in the sky! Theresa, GG, et al must be grinning ear to ear right now ... looking up at The Rock! |

The weather is spectacularly gorgeous. That's the good news. Now for the bad ...
We have lost 5 potential Gatherers to the Alice/Uncas Syndrome [AUS]! Wonderful lasses, these kind souls were. Here's the proof:

They will be missed ...
I'm off to play with their ghosts, plus a few live bodies collectively known as the French Broads. An old-fashioned shootin' match!
Yee-haw!
Anyone?

Yes, Virginia, there WAS a 2003 Gathering.
Same crew as above plus Rich, Mac and me. Rich was presented with the results of the "Federici Project", and will have all that he needs to dress in 1750's period fashion at the 2004 Gathering! Who needs Daniel Day-Lewis? We got Rich!

I was just going to say that, Steph!!!
I suspect we'll hear some more from some other un-Gatherers who attended this year's un-Gathering as soon as they safely arrive home. Quite the imaginations they have. Some riotous pictures hopefully to come.
After the above photo was taken, six of us went over to a very quiet Spirits on the River for a delightful meal on a beautiful evening. We chatted there for what, 3 hours?
Suffice it to say, I had a great day. Thank you other 8 for making it so! As Fitz mentioned, I was in for a shocking surprise ... I'll say some more on that in another post in just a bit.
Oh, and as of this AM, the total projected number of Gatherers for the 2004 event has reached 52!
What are you waiting for? |

So glad to hear you all had such a good time. Rich we can't wait to hear of your reaction to the gift. We soooo wanted to be there to share the moment with you . But just wasn't in the cards. We did however hike to Bridal Veil Falls the Saturday before. And let me tell you. The water was so high you couldn't walk up the rocks on either side of the falls the whole way. Near the top you had to forge your way through the brambles to get to the waterfall. Once underneath it, there was so much water coming over it you could hear NOTHING!!!!. It was wonderful. The only part I didn't like was the fact the on the trail there I stepped on the tail of a snake!!!. Now anyone who knows me knows how I feel about snakes . Need I say more....
I can't wait to see you all this time next year!!!!! |

Not forgotten, just not photographed. He may be a convert to flintlock shooting. As well as some of the ladies. And don't forget Bob Penland, who was on the other side of the camera at the time the picture was taken. And the other FBR's who were good enough ot put up with us.

Cherie, We were all wishing you could have joined us at CRP but I'm glad you got to visit Dupont. I was there in April and you're right, you can't climb up the side of the falls because of all the water! Hickory Nut Falls at CRP looked a lot different due to the water also, it was beautiful! And loud! Have you ever seen a big round table sort of thing at one of the picnic areas at Dupont? I can't remember which picnic shelter it's near. Anyway it looks like an old grist mill. You can sit or lay on it and spin around and it's great fun, although I'm sure that's not what it's there for. You should try it! :-) Missed ya, Steph |

I'm glad to know that you "un-gatherers" had a good time! I thought about you all several times during the weekend even though I was pleasantly occupied elsewhere. I sure look forward to seeing some pictures and reading more accounts of your time in Mohicanland. Wishing you all well! Karen

Steph.. I do believe I have seen that wheel like thing. I believe it is by the picnic area there near triple falls. We died on that wheel during the "2 mile" hike that first year... I remember lying there thinking "I'll never do this again" BOY was I wrong Marc and I will be back there again this coming Saturday to hike the 3 falls we did'nt do two weeks ago. |
