Oh yeah ... Had a blast!!! Great images ...
That's Hudson River Psych Ctr.? [or, whatever it was called] I was only there a few times ... to transport patients & I think once for some training of some sort. But, the stairwells sure look familiar! The things I saw going on in those things at HVPC!! [Harlem Valley Psychiatric Center - Wingdale, NY - for those in the dark!]
The Dead Bird photo ... real nice!!
Thanks for the "memories," Jimbo! |

Rich, those pics are all from our old home,Harlem Valley. They look like Building 26 and 28. The stairwell is from our building.Maybe the same one where I was knocked down a flight from a secure resident. That metal door where that guy took a pic of his reflection in the plexiglass might be our old entrance door to the secure ward. The place is like alcatraz now, just sitting there. Brenda, that's where Rich and I were trained to... ah,there's too much fighting going on now anyway, you get the point or 5 point or strait jacket. |

That one pic looking out the window with the bars on it must be Building 26.I can still see the green bars on the windows when I drive by.We were up in the world in our building. They removed our bars and replaced them with modern security screens, remember? |

No wonder everything seemed so eerily familiar!!! It looked like the old homestead, but I thought it said Hudson on the site. I see it all in a different light now.
The Plexiglas shot has to be our old Ward 089 ... or, maybe across the hall? Did the ladies' unit have that? I forget.
How in the name of heaven did you find that web site!?! |

Yep the ladies ward had that too because we started there as the secure ward in 1980 as ward 088.I remember when they put up the plexiglass because so many guys were busy busting out the regular glass with the fine wires running through it.Talk about blood and micro-surgery!! How I fine these things? Surf and turf. Got another one for ya once I figure how to get it to ya.I'm not too bright with all this cybercrap. |

Well, let's see ...
I clearly see the maintenance place across Highway 22. And I can see the ball field [many Little League practices there] and the field beyond where Sid & I once found a severely bleeding [self-inflicted, of course] Charlie Rella in the dead of winter [this after I slipped on a patch of ice, falling on the old - well, it wasn't so old then! - rear end, much to Sid's amusement & delight!!!] and I see our old building and the employee quarters, where I lived for a short time when I first moved there, near your home!
I see, too, the Administration Building, just left of center [though it seems smaller!] where you & I had our first meeting. What!?! NO PHONE BOOTH?!?
All in all, though, it looks quite serene ... as Wingdale usually is ... I kinda wish I were there right now! |

Thanks for another great visual, Rich! I'm laughing while hoping that the only thing hurt was your pride.
You guys have some amazing stories to tell... |

Well Rich, believe it or not,the old battle ground where we once worked will be demolished.Upon the ruins of the once great state facility will sit a major senior complex with stores, etc. It will be a village within a village. Before they start bustin' the place up I'm gonna grab some stuff for my own museum.I want the bars or cage off of a window,I also want to get upstairs and get the sign off the old metal door to our ward which says SECURE WARD.Maybe I'll take a brick from the building and look around for other artifacts.Hey maybe I'll find one of your ponytail holders that you lost during a scuffle, lol. |

What I'd really like you to find for me, Jimbo, is that piece of my mind I lost up there!!
Guess it was just a matter of time before they leveled the place - it's had its day. |

Are either of you familiar with Willard State Hospital in Ovid, NY? I worked there for 6 months in 1964 or '65 when I was a student nurse. Your conversations about the hospitals where you worked sure do bring back memories for me! Chris |

Chris, I do believe Willard is closed. It might have been one of the first places that was on the chopping block.Definitely a dangerous job with no thanks.Alot of folks don't realize what went on behind the walls.I saved many a nurse from being a statistic.Rich did too.Rich, did you pull Leif [omitted] off of Sandy Cannon? Anyway,if they gave out purple hearts in psycho-service,Georgie boy would be displayed all over me.Same for Rich. |

Glad to hear Willard closed. It was one of those institutions right out of the horror films. I had my bacon saved a number of times by other staff members. However, my closest call was at NY Psychiatric Institute in NYC when a young girl caught me alone and beat me against a wall. That was when I decided that psychiatric nursing was probably not what I wanted to do. You guys are bringing back a lot of memories from college days. Chris |

Chris - I had an interview there when I was deciding where to transfer ... I remember a nice "campus" ... but, me memory ain't too good. Luckily, I chose Harlem Valley where I was destined to hook up with Securemann!
Jim - That was some psychologist I pulled "Mr." [omitted] off of, as he was beating her head on the floor ... that was my "famous" parallel-to-the-ground-fly-through-the-air-to-nab-him-right-around-the-neck leap. Not so much as a "thank you," either from that stuck up psychologist. Oh well, all in a day's work! |

Oh yeah, now I remember. That happened in the hallway by the water fountain.I was on 1-1 with a highly homicidal, suicidal, assaultive and altogether not to nice of a fellow out on the ward.It happened so quick that the only thing I remember was Sid laughing and saying how your hair stuck straight out as you were flying through the air. |

Talk about no thanks- Many years ago I saved this individual who was in the process of getting murdered (literally)by big bad [omitted] who was 6'3 and about 250lbs. at the time.I don't think you were with us yet Rich.Anyway,to make a long story short,I met her many years later in Poughkeepsie.I was my usual congenial self and went up to her with enthusiastic greetings and she just looked at me over her glasses and said,"I don't believe I know who you are".SAY WHAT?!! I said to myself maybe she did get a good head shot and forgot. No way.I even visited her after the assault and even when she was on light duty months later.I know what the problem was.She was promoted to the Regional Office and was now very sophisticated.Oh well, just like you said Rich, all in a day's work. |

Good Lord in Heaven, Guys! How did you ever survive those years? Sounds like something out of "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest" (which, BTW, was filmed in the Oregon State Psychiatric Hospital in Salem, Oregon. I was still living in Salem at the time. No... not in the hospital!). Thanks, Brother Jim, for another great Rich-hair-visual!
Nice to hear from you. Stay around, OK? |

Hey W.W,I always wondered where that movie was filmed.Actually those fellows were real mild compared to what we had.The criminal justice system did alot of dumping on us so we just basically had a bunch of hoods incarcerated with us.Of course along side of the real nut jobs.As Custer said: "I think we're surrounded".It's good to be out of the line of fire and now I can joke about it.Rich, I'll try to find that little piece of your mind you left up there. It will be easy because it will have some hair attached.LOL........ |

Hi Rich, The campus at Willard was beautiful, right on Seneca Lake. However, the buildings were, as WW says, right out of "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest": 20 foot ceilings with 25 watt light bulbs, and everything painted seasick green. Very wierd psychiatrists. The whole experience was pretty surreal! Chris |

I remember that lovely green color! Some genius came up with the idea to paint everything pink because it's a calming color and would reduce the level of violence on the unit. They painted pink and the guys saw red! Weird psychiatrists? I can write a book. |
