Had a fairly pleasant experience riding back & forth to Washington, DC yesterday, picking up my 17-year old who was attending a week-long Presidential Classroom - he was in the Law & Democracy program. Met Senator Edwards of NC [D], saw the President, toured many sites, caucused on & presented a mock trial on the constitutionality of the death penalty, etc. Had a great & fulfilling time. For me, it was great to see the Capitol City ... with a good-as-new Pentagon sitting there on the Potomac ...

Whooops ... waaay off topic ...

Not much going on:

Smiles: Added some new smilies - though not the "blowing kisses" that was requested [couldn't find one, yet!]. Here they are:

Editing Posts: As most of you know, the function of the editing posts feature is mainly to correct errors - of omission, typos, etc., not to redo entirely the content. Well, someone has finally designed a way to prevent that, and I think I will be implementing it here soon. We've already had an incident, a while back, where people were rampantly deleting/editing because they were mad at one another. Once this is finished, you will have a time limit to edit a post. Unfortunate for those who have been here since '97 and are fully trustworthy, but hopefully temporary. I've requested an option where prevention of edits can be applied on an individual basis. We'll see ... Meanwhile, if you really need to edit a post after the designated time-frame, you will need to contact me or a moderator, or just leave it be.

Gathering:

On set ... Wes Studi & David Wright

Don't forget Gathering Sign-Ups!!!!!!!!!!!

A Move? It boiled down to this ... our web host felt this site was too busy for the amount we currently pay, and "throttled" our site to prevent so much use [by limiting bandwidth], effectively rendering this board non-functional. We have temporarily had them lift the "sanctions," and are working out a deal. If that fails to suit us, we will be moving to another host ... not the way we want to go, but it might be necessary. Already have a place lined up. If it happens, it'll be in early March.

And so it goes ...

Wow, it sounds like you packed a lot into that day Rich. What a great experience for your son!

With regard to the editing thing: I'm not familiar with the incident you describe (I don't think), but it seems to me allowing folks the ability to edit or delete stuff they regret is a good thing.

Edit: Oops, just went back to your post and realized you weren't there for all that stuff. But you have the vicarious experience!
See, editing is a good thing.

Yeah ... that would have been quite a day!!!! No, he had all the fun, I merely drove 16 straight hours ...

As for the editing, yes, I agree, it's generally a good thing and one of the reasons I liked this format. It can, though [and has], be abused. If you notice, most edits are performed within 5 minutes of the post ... I just set it to 60. Purely experimental - will see how it works. Anyone can edit their post within 60 minutes of posting it ... then, it's in stone! If this results in problems, we'll change it. Like I said, just experimental. Remember, on the old board you couldn't edit at all!

To Cherie - I thought about you guys while on the road. I went in the "back" way, though ... via I-81 & I-66.

Oh-Oh! I think I have been using the editing feature in the wrong manner! I wasn't involved in the "mad-at-each-other-incident"; however, I have edited some of my posts a day or so later, to add more material. Sorry! I'm still learning the ropes here but will try harder to get it right.

Love the new smilies, Rich!

Oh, no ... you're fine, WW. It's unfortunate that responsible posters have to be adversely affected. I prefer to leave it open so that anyone can edit their post, as necessary, any time.

BUT, it can lead to chaos in a thread. Oh Anthony?!? If we all just changed our text over & over, the threads would make no sense after a while. I like o-r-d-e-r. Discussions can't really take place if folks keep going back & changing their previous statements. It just doesn't work ...

So, like I said, we'll try this out - 60 minutes - at least if it works, it's 60 minutes; I don't even know if it works! - then, if it causes too much grief, we'll maybe go back.

Again, we prospered for just about 6 years without ANYONE, even me, being able to edit a post, so I don't really see it as a big deal.

One of my favorite Ben Franklin quotes: Say what you mean; mean what you say. A tall order, perhaps, but worth aiming for ...

Hey, Anth ... at least I gave you a "BS" smile!!!!

I forgot to mention that topics can still be edited, at will, until there is a reply made ... consistent with the notion of conversation flow.

For those who wonder what this "Six Degrees" thing is all about - and I still try to adhere to this "principal" (a Last of the Mohicans???) - see: Six Degrees to LOTM

No, Rich, on the contrary - you are NOT a "Last of the Mohicans" on this one! Love of this film, and discussions about it and related "six degrees" topics, are the reasons that this site took on a life of its own, and became our beloved Mohicanland! It continues to grow and evolve into something unique and beautiful, unlike any other site on the internet. It is a place where those of us who love the film, and/or love that period in history, are free to come and explore, interact with friends new and old, and escape into a virtual community that is wonderful beyond words.

I continue to be amazed at this site, and your ability to maintain it and keep it going - server problems and all! I am so very thankful that your love of LOTM put you "on the trail" in the mountains of North Carolina, and led you to create this wonderful place for the rest of us to enjoy. In addition to all that - and here's a perfect example of "six degrees to LOTM" - you continue to organize and help put together these Great Mohican Gatherings each year!

Thank you, Rich, for all that you do!

Thanks, guys!

OK, in summation, regarding editing & deleting of posted messages:

  • A topic can be deleted or edited at any time, as long as there are no replies [this hasn't changed]
  • A reply has 60 minutes before it is "uneditable" ... We can alter that timeframe from 0-9999 minutes
  • This does not affect moderators, so if you really need something edited badly, contact one of us and [for a slight fee ] this can possibly be done.

Is this fair & workable? Should we allot a longer grace period? What?!?

Sometimes it takes me years to think things over, Rich.

I have to confess, though, I haven't done much editing here. On other boards I frequent, the fact that a post has been edited is automatically noted, with date/time. (Although moderators and administrators with their superpowers can get around this.)

I don't think I've seen this here?

I do understand your concerns, especially if the feature has been used to alter the substance/meaning of posts in a thread. I tend to think of the edit feature more as a way of self-moderating on the one hand and updating on the other.

But your solution seems perfectly fair to me.
