I have been playing around with Facebook, mostly because I have been wondering if a web site I maintain for the South Carolina Independent Rangers, a reenacting group, should have a link to Facebook to facilitate communication. Right now, I am thinking no. But this morning I decided to add both my daughters as "friends" because I thought, how much harm can that do? First thing I noticed was that Facebook accessed all my email addresses and tried to get me to add them as "friends". I deleted this list entirely. Second, within about 15 minutes after I added my daughter, she call to say that she saw where I added her. 15 minutes? She must live on Facebook! So other than a few of my family, I really don't see where I want to be involved with this. And if anyone from the SC Rangers wants info, they can look on the website like God meant for them to. |

Exactly Fitz, - most sites like Facebook, copy your address book, (without your knowledge or approval) and some send out mail in your name asking for those folks to join that social site. - Several months ago I was looking at a new apartment. I had found one on Craigs List, - and responded by e-mail, - unfortunately THAT put me in the owners address book. In this case she was fairly attractive, (divorced airline hostess) and I kept getting mail from her, asking me to join that site she belonged to. It looked like she had sent the mail, - she didn't I'm sure. It wasn't Facebook, but one like it. That stuff's not for me, ... |

Well I am on Facebook in a very limited capacity. Again, this is a test to see if it would work for the SC Rangers. So I get a few emails wanting me to befriend someone or other, and I do. Very selectively. Like Rich, my cousin, WW, my daughters, etc. So now what? Are these people going to send me emails, or what? They already had my email address, so why the need for Facebook? I just can't figure this whole thing out. |

Squeeee.... I feel so special! Miss-yer-Lay-Fran-say "friended" me!
Fitz, it is just another way to connect with people, and especially people you have lost touch with. When I first joined, one of my best friends from high school, whom I hadn't had contact with in about 45 years, found me. It's been great to reconnect with her. I have found that some of my relatives will communicate better this way than in any other, for some strange reason. New? A passing fad?
You don't have to "friend" everyone who asks you. I have turned down people I don't know, or those who I feel it would be a bad idea. For example, I don't have any of my work colleagues friended. I just don't think it's a good idea for them to have that much of a window into my private life. Not that I post any secrets! And you can, of course, delete your account from Facebook when you decided you have played around with it enough. |

First thing I saw was a list of "friends" most of whom I never heard of or met. Why do they think these are my friends? And I would never write anything about my personal life on a public web site. And can't understand why anyone would. People say, "going to the beach next week" which is an add saying "guess what, no one will be home, so come on in and help yourself." I guess it's just like teenagers, and even my 7-year-old granddaughter, that keep a diary or journal. Makes for some interesting reading if you are a parent, but really stupid on their part. "Don't never put nothing in no writing!" (I just love the quadruple negatives!)
Time will tell, I guess. |

Many companies today do a Facebook search on any new applicant, - as part of their hiring process. Naturally, they don't tell folks this, - but what "you put out there" voluntary, is public knowledge. |

I have spent some time looking around Facebook. I saw nothing that would lead me to the conclusion it was other than a raid by savages bent on thievery. |
