Dick Winters has left us. If you have seen the mini-series "Band of Brothers" or read the book, you will know who I mean. He was a True Hero with True Grit who should be honored and remembered.

Rest in Peace, Sir. And.... thank you.

I cherish the time I spent visiting with him when we dedicated the Ridgeway Hall at the US Army Heritage and Education Center (AHEC) a few years ago. I will never forget the frail man with a walker crossing the stage to make a few remarks, supported on either side by two very large Screaming Eagles (101st Airborne Troopers, as he once was....). The standing applause was thunderous, and he seemed very embarrassed by it all, but that is the man he was. He gave his papers to the library there, and they are available for study by scholars who may have a need to do that, and to military officers at the War College there as part of their studies.

I echo your statement and sentiment, WW........

arrive at the grave safely
in a well preserved body,
but rather to skid in sideways,
totally worn out, shouting
'...holy sh*t ...what a ride!'

I wish I had been there to witness that, Seamus. Tears would have been streaming down my face.
