With the current daily barrage of social woes and strife there still are a few that simply goes beyond my feeble comprehension. This is one that takes the cake. WARNING - only read this if your blood pressure is under control or if you have a suitable tranquilizer available! Folks, how did we let our nation and it's people get so screwed up and dysfunctional? This is a good case where I would support mandatory sterilization after no more then two children (and in this case that's being generous). I wonder what this nice little family unit cost the taxpayers and don't forget to add in the fathers prison and court costs!!!!!! Lord help me keep my head on my shoulders and grant me the grace to see the Christian way to address situations such as these, Amen!

| I wouldn't go so far as to ask for sterilization, but I agree that this is a case of entitlement-syndrome. It is rather quickly spreading through our culture and our Government is encouraging it in most all they do. To see just how widespread it has become, just watch a few episodes of Judge Judy. I am amazed and bewildered at some of the attitudes I see there ... |

Rich I understand your concern over my statement on mandatory sterilization and while it does sound stern and radical let me explain my rationale.
I want to stress that I am not racially biased and state that while the family profiled in this article is black, the problem knows no skin color or ethnicity. It exists among all groups in all geographic areas.
First, If memory serves me correctly the average number of children per family in America is slightly under two (remember this is an average but for sake of rounding lets call it two). Now why is two the average number of children, I argue that most "responsible," parents with modest or limited income realize the true cost of raising and educating a child and realize they are usually limited in surplus monies for additional children. Parents with higher income or more resources who are able to provide for their families can afford additional children as they may see fit. I share the sentiments expressed in a bumper sticker I saw the other day which said "DON'T BREED IT IF YOU CANT FEED IT!" As blatant and inflammatory as this statement may first appear, in retrospect, there is great truth there. I feel so sad for these children having to grow up in this environment, they truly are the innocent victims and need to be provided for. I do agree with the mother in the article when she said that "children are gifts from God." Responsible parents have to consider the "quality," of life and plan for funding that level of lifestyle and expectations for each and every child. Sadly we are at a place in American history in which there no longer exist the expectation that the next generation of American will enjoy a wealthier and more abundant life. What future do these poor children inherit? The article is telling when the reported tells of the young man giving a bottle to the younger child, (case in point of the irresponsible parent is illustrated further in that the older children assume the support and nurturing role of the parent resulting in the parent not having to meet the demands of additional children while "enjoying," the resulting increase of benefits) while the other children find their own amusement barefooted among the squalid conditions replete with dirty diapers. If you did not know otherwise, you might think this scenario to exist in some poor third world country not America in the 21st century.
Secondly, what if you were able to guarantee yourself a "raise," approximately ever 10 months to a year. That is basically what these irresponsible parents are able to do. I won't go so far as to say it is premeditated but it appears there is little to no negative impact in doing so and therefore their irresponsible attitude is rewarded. In reading this linked article it is obvious that there were charges or at the least concerns from Florida children services that there were "Negligence," and apparently some danger to the safety and welfare of the children. I am at a loss as to how this mother was able to have her children returned. If you remember this same mother has already had 3 children attain the age of 18+ and were off her benefits, I would bet that since psychology tells us that we are a product of our environment, that they also will adopt the lifestyle as it is the only way of life they know. I contend that we have to have some way to break the cycle and teach responsible and accountable lifestyles. We simply have to find a solution and quickly, as we have seen that community organizers and social change progressives are pushing voter registration which basically ensure a growing and active base to continue to enhance and enlarge entitlements and redistribution of wealth. With the increase in retirement of the baby boomers and the down economy, there are fewer income producers with less revenues to try and fund these programs. It is simply a matter of time to where there will be more dysfunctional voters to continue to return social progressive candidates to office then more centrist or conservative voters. This is a recipe for disaster in my opinion. I also believe this is the reason that social progressives are pushing for the immigration reform bill with some form of amnesty. It ensures a fresh supply of entitlement dependent and dysfunctional voters.
I have no problem with being charitable and helping folks that can't help themselves and do it quite often, but that should be my choice not forced upon me by government.
I hope my post does not offend my Mohican Land family and though it might help if I was able to explain what my reasoning was behind my original post. |

I guess the Christian way to address this situation would be to volunteer to send an organization some money for those children and pray for them. They are innocent in this instance and the only way they are going to feel God's love is through a human encounter. We can't do anything about the attitude of the parent(s), but we know for a fact that God loves each and every one of those kids (and their parents, for that matter!) |

| The real problem here, - is "what type" of children will she, and others like her - raise? In no way am I against giving folks who truly need it a "helping hand" - but assistance shouldn't turn into a life time project, which too often happens. |

As I noted here before, and will yet again, that there is a difference between a 'Social Safety-Net' for those truly in need of help, and a 'Social Hammock' for the terminally lazy
