President Obama has announced how he will divide the $1.4 cash award that accompanied his Nobel Peace Prize:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/03/11/AR2010031104076.html?hpid=moreheadlines

All very worthy charities, IMHO. The largest donation will go to Fisher House, which provides housing for families of veterans being treated at military and VA hospitals. More than 2/3 of the cash award will go to American charities, in case anyone's keeping track.

BTW, I thought "Fisher House" sounded vaguely familiar. It turns out that this was the charity (among others) to which Denzel Washington made a sizable donation several years ago, although the circumstances generated some confusion in the press:

Mary,

Who pays the taxes on this, is the award 'after taxes', or is he tax exempt? I really don't know....that's why I ask. Africare is American-based, as is the Central Asia Institute, therefore making his gifts 100% American.....as it should be, IMNSHO.

Certainly nice to hear Mary, - doesn't change my view of his politics of course, but the right thing to do.

you can keep "The Change"

I'm still trying to figure out exactly what was the great act of global peace accomplished by 'The One', which caused the Nobel committee to nominate him in the first place.

I didn't know the answer to your tax question, Seamus, and researching the question only confirmed my suspicion that this is way beyond the Federal Income Tax I course I took in law school. Here's the most definite statement I found:

http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-503544_162-20000311-503544.html

Apparently he's asked the Nobel Committee to distribute it in accordance with his wishes, and by doing that he won't incur tax liability or receive tax deductions.

Much like the million-dollar plus legal opposition to the release of his birth certificate and college/university transcripts, as well as the location of his Selective Service Registration, we will probably never know the truth behind his premature selection by the Nobel committee either...

Timely donation of questionable prize money (possibly as a response to abysmal poll numbers) notwithstanding, he still remains our 'Undocumented President'

Polls, schmolls. That the prize money would be donated to charity is not a recent decision; the President stated he would do so shortly after learning that he had won the Peace Prize. It's only the identity of the recipients that's being announced now.

And you know, Sarge, if you asked ME to produce my birth certificate, I'd have to answer that I don't have it. Never did, as far as I know. Presumably one was given to my parents, but if it still exists and if not, what happened to it, are questions I can't answer. What I do know (because I work in the building next door) is that on the first floor of the Health and Welfare Building is a sign pointing toward "Birth and Death Certificates." I'd follow that sign, fill out the required forms, pay the required fee, and accept whatever they gave me -- presumably a duplicate birth certificate or the equivalent. If that wasn't good enough for you, and assuming that I was still feeling cooperative (questionable, at that point), I'd hunt down copies of local newspapers and look for announcements of my birth. During the campaign Obama took steps equivalent to those I've just mentioned. And if a duplicate birth certificate and a newspaper announcement or two weren't good enough for you, I suppose we could move on to sworn affidavits from people who knew my parents way back when . . . or I could say, "You know what? I'm done catering to your paranoid suspicions. Deal with it."

Then why 're-report' it now?

That may be so, but then again you wouldn't have a law firm like Perkins Coie blocking every attempt at the release of the previously mentioned records, from October 2008 to the present day, and all to the tune of $1,666,397.01

...Or would you?
