Great news!!! A movie theater has been reserved for our viewing of LOTM during the Gathering. This is a new location, very nice, and we'll arrange dinner on-site before the movie. I think you'll all be pleased with this theater; it's impeccably clean and the video and audio systems are terrific! Look for some changes in 2010's Gathering line-up, and maybe a surprise or two! Stay tuned...

Hi everyone! Looks like some familiar faces and maybe some new ones will be on hand at Gathering 2010. Since the photos of our movie theater for this year didn't work on the Gathering info page, I wanted to post a link so you all can see it: http://booneassociates.com/moreprojects.html I think that is the company that did the restoration work. Anyway, it's a beautiful site and I think we're in for a real treat. I went by and checked the sound and visual quality and both are awesome. Looking forward to it! |

I was just thinking that since the Gathering is centered more to the west this year, in the Canton area, folks coming early or staying later might like to visit Cherokee and the Great Smokey Mt. Railroad. Also, this June 27 is the 250th anniversary of the Battle of Echoe near Franklin, NC. As far as I know nothing will be done to commemorate it, but it would be an interesting place to see. |

Fitz, I didn't know about that battle in Franklin but that sounds interesting. Franklin is a nice little town; our CW reenacting group participates in a heritage festival there each summer. It is also the home of Nikwasi, an ancient Cherokee site where the only thing left is a mound. If you are driving through Franklin and you blink, you will miss it, nestled in between used car lots, fast food places and gas stations. Still, it's interesting though: http://www.maconnchistorical.org/nikwasi/ |

Yeah, in June 1760 Col. Montgomery marched in relief of the garrison at Fort Loudoun. He got as far as Franklin where he was attacked by the Cherokee under Oconostota. After heavy fighting both sides withdrew, and a little over a month later Fort Loudoun surrendered.
The rest of the story: A year later the Brits came back in strength under Col. Grant and laid waste to every Cherokee town they could find. The Cherokee were forced to make peace or starve. |
