Every year, during the Gathering planning and sign-ups, at least once the idea of inviting one of the cast members to the Gathering is brought up. This is great, but usually it is too late. These "stars" require a fee and that can be fairly expensive [not to mention the travel expenses]. Time is needed to raise the money. Numbers [as in number of attendees] helps, too. The larger the Gathering, the easier it is to raise money, obviously.
But, it can -and has been - done:
- 1999 - Eric Schweig - auctioned a mask
- 2001 - Wes Studi - The Magua Meter
- 2004 - Russell Means - Coins for Chingachgook
Remember those fund raisers? They worked. And remember, a couple of those Gatherings involved hiring musicians, as well. Lots of money was required, but good advance planning and some creative thinking got it done - all 3 times.
So, I am just throwing this out as advance notice. I figure, as I said, this will come up at one point[s] or another. The time to start this in motion is as soon as humanly possible ... like, NOW? That is, if it is even desired.
And, the first thing necessary in that process is to set a date ... Sachem has spoken!!!

If a non-gatherer may offer a suggestion in this matter, allow me to suggest inviting Sheila Kay Adams. She was the "humming woman" in LOTM -- sitting on the ground in a nighttime scene within the fort, humming as she comforted a wounded soldier. In the credits her name appears as Sheila Adams Barnhill. Maybe some of you down North Carolina way have heard of her. She is a native of, and still resides in, the mountains of western NC; sings the old ballads and tells the old stories that have come down through her family; and is a wonderful entertainer and very gracious person. I saw her in Harrisburg several years ago. She didn't mention her LOTM appearance, and when I asked her about it at intermission she was surprised that anyone would have noticed and remembered her.
Her website is under construction, but you can still get some info there: http://www.jimandsheila.com

Wow! I absolutely love it when someone points out a new tidbit of information about the movie, whether it be something that I missed in a scene (like the apple press!) or someone who contributed something ever-so-small to the movie.
I have heard the humming just sort of in the background, but have never paid any attention to the woman or her character. Bookworm, this is very cool! Thank you so much for drawing her to our attention!

I'm sure that Rich would back you up on this suggestion, Fitz!
As for me, I would love the opportunity to ask her what it was like to film those scenes from LOTM in which only she and Daniel Day-Lewis appeared - especially, "THE KISS!" |

Why.... Miss-Yer Lay-Fran-say! Does our resident Frenchman, who professes to dislike the English so much, have a hidden liking and desire for Miss Cora Munro... an Englishwoman? Never say it is so!
This is a most interesting coincidence: last evening, I was channel surfing and came upon the Fox Movie Channel. They have been playing LOTM over and over again (Geez, I hate cable TV!) for about a month or longer, and it was at about the mid-way point when I landed on the channel. Guess what scene I got there just in time to see? Yep! The whole Kiss scene, starting at just before the point where the Humming Woman does her thing. So, I was able to really concentrate on her and listen to her humming. Sounded like a very pleasant voice.

I rest my case. She is one of us.
Please, Rich, please???

Some great ideas here! And that's part of Rich's point with this topic, I believe. We all have an idea of WHO we would like to have as a guest at a future Gathering, but so far I don't see anyone with ideas about how to raise money to make it happen, nor do I see anyone volunteering to coordinate such an effort. Anyone? |

Greetings:
Here is another idea--what about "Martin" that is Sebastian Roche? Unfortunately, his scene was cut but HE IS listed in the credits. Bummer. He could still talk about the movie couldn't he? Don't know if he is available or what the cost would be but, what the heck?!! (PS He is Colonel Glover in THE CROSSING and George Washington in the movie that they show at Mount Vernon.
Cheers!

I think that Fitz is right about Madeleine. She has been in contact with Rich and with plenty of advance warning, she may very well be able to be at the next Gathering. Besides, there has always been a male actor. I think that it is about time a female was asked to the Gathering. As for raising money, well, there is nothing better than good ol' donations. In other words, SEND MONEY if y'all want Madeleine or whoever else to be at the next Gathering. We have a bank account for these type of things and whoever sends money, I will send them a flipbook of whichever year that you want of the Gathering pictures. I still have plenty left. You wouldn't be buying the flipbooks, they would just be a "thank you" for helping out.

Well...Since Madeline Stowe hasn't been to one of the more recent gatherings, why not? Let's invite her?
Although we all secretly know who'd I'd like to see at the gathering. |

I am totally sick that I missed this year's gathering!!! This fall, my husband & I were going to take a Mohican tour of western NC. However, the week we were planning to take our little tour the western part of the state was experiencing gas shortages and it was a very rainy week. So, unfortunately, we didn't make it, but are going to wait til spring and hope for good weather. |
