Let me interject my own thoughts here:
I voted for Answer #1 ... moving it to Sunday. This all comes about, btw, in an attempt to accommodate one Gatherer who has asked about the possibility.
Anyway, that aside, I like the idea. First of all, by that time, we've seen all the locations that we're going to see, and therefore folks can easily identify the maximum number of locales, saying, "Hey! I was just there!!!" This is particularly nice for any newcomers to the Gatherings. Secondly, it really is a "main event," worthy, I think, of closing the Gathering with.
The problem comes in ... and this is why I posted these two polls simultaneously ... when you consider the raffles [a mute point if no one steps in to actually coordinate them!]. They, too, are an ideal closing event .. filled with interaction and the like. So, then when do we do the raffles? I guess we could just flip flop them, and do 'em Saturday. They tend to inspire a late night, though. I don't know.
I should warn any potential volunteer ... doing the raffles does impede on your Gathering "fun time." There's work to be done ...
Because of the lack of a volunteer, I'm of the mind to chuck the whole thing ... maybe even Ariel's Auction ... and simplifying the whole she-bang. Perhaps just setting up the room for displays and for "traders" to sell wares, as time permits.

As far as having a raffle to offset future expenses, I don't think that is a biggie (for instance this year, the kitty is empty - NO BIGGIE). BUT!!! I would hate to see the tradition of Ariel's cabin fall by the wayside. Kate did such a wonderful job originating this and Jayne carried on in perfect fashion. Perhaps we could sort of combine the two, all proceeds going to Ariel, and have everyone bring at least one item, if at all possible. Those items being either homemade (in true Ariel's cabin tradition), OR home state theme related (like last year's baskets), OR LOTM related. Some items could be raffle worthy and some items might be silent auction worthy. Besides, it is a great time to mingle and win special trinkets that add so much to Mohican memories. Each year I end up spending a bit of time with a gatherer I hadn't gotten to know very well.
I think ending the festivities with the movie is a fine idea! I know the particular person who couldn't make the movie last year would have been THRILLED to have had it on Sunday!!! My vote was for either, but the movie would be one of the worst things to miss, so I say go for it for a finale!

Rich and GG,
Here are my thoughts on the raffle/Ariel's Cabin issue. I voted for Sunday night for the movie, mainly because I always felt having the raffle on Sunday night was a kind of let down. It has always been such fun and a time when I talked with folks I hadn't really spent any time with until that night. Then it's pack up and move out. I think the idea of simplifying the raffle and Ariel's cabin is a good one, but I would hate to eliminate it completely. I'll send my thoughts on alternatives later. Need some mullin-over time! Jayne

I can live with that. I think I like the idea of a Sunday movie night closing ... Soldier #2 in uniform ... the whole bit. A real climax ... And, I certainly don't want to not do Ariel's Raffle ... Ok, ok, we'll do it! I'm anxious to hear more thoughts/suggestions on this stuff. I'm all ears [well, except for this huge nose!]
Ann & I discussed, even at the last Gathering, the feasibility of doing the raffle [Ariel's, that is - unless a volunteer comes forward, or someone has another take on this, I think the general raffle might have to be history] at the theater itself ... or maybe at the Mohican Games on Saturday evening. That might be excellent! Winding up a full day of hanging out with one another with our traditional "getting to know you" after-raffle session - with still a full day to go. Of course, the logistics of hauling all the stuff might be prohibitive. I don't know, really. Just throwing stuff out there for you to mull over.
Very open to - seeking, in fact - suggestions ...
This could be a very good Gathering! |

It does seem appropriate that since we are all together because of our love for this movie, that the movie itself should be the Grande Finale. Besides, after all the hiking, rafting, mountain climbing, shooting and getting up at the crack of dawn each morning, we'll all be ready for an evening of eating pizza while collapsed in front of a movie screen. Any chance we might squeeze some recliners into the theatre this time?
Pat
PS--Just kidding. I could never fall asleep while Daniel's onscreen.

Hi all. This is Ariel Segal. Just wanted to say thank you to Rich for broaching the idea of a Sunday showing. Now, given the progress of my Master's thesis, I may or may not even come to the Gathering BUT I still strongly hope to. The Sunday idea might work very well as a finale indeed!
Wanted also to say hi to Gadget Girl, Rattlesnake Woman,etc.etc. How is everyone? I'll try to post more during winterbreak in January.
Sincerely, Ariel Segal
P.S. For thesis research, I went to Amherst, MA this summer. Also beautiful and lots of Colonial type history in the area. Anyone been there? |

Ummm....guess I am a minority voice on this one! I like the Sat night show, mainly I think, because I enjoyed spending the last night all together as a group with the opportunity to have a chat and a drink together. I don't know how it was last year, but I felt that the raffle ran on a bit too long the previous two years, but I enjoyed the relaxed sitting around the camp fire element of the last night....
I guess I just have visions of seeing the movie and then everyone trickling out the movie theatre and drifting away!
Just my 2 cemys worth!

Which is exactly what happened in Year One of these Gatherings ... some people did linger in the parking lot, but there was no real "closure." And that is why, largely by Marcia's doing, the raffles became the Finale.
So ...

Hi, Carol,
At the top of the page for this Board, you will see a link On the Trail...Home. Click on that link & then on the button that says Mohican Gatherings...on Top of the World! You will then see links to all of the Gatherings, including The Great Mohican Gathering of 2003! Click on that link & you will find quite a bit of information, including dates for the next Gathering.
See you in June! |

At first I thought the idea of a Sunday "grand finale" was great, but I have to agree with Huggy. I too have always enjoyed the "relaxed sitting around the camp fire element of the last night". Talking about great Gathering moments, exchanging info, heated debates about who looked better with their shirt off during the lacrosse game - DDL or Uncas...
Saying goodbye in the parking lot, like the first Gathering, felt empty. caitlin |
