Poll Question:
I'm going on a scouting trip next weekend to make final arrangements for Gathering VI Bunking booking! A new location (Camp Mishemokwa) has been discovered that is a strong possibility and is 20 minutes closer to Asheville in Gerton, NC. You've likely been through this hamlet on the way to Asheville from Chimney Rock. It used to be a summer camp and is now open for group bookings. At press time there is a potential scheduling conflict with another group, BUT it still may be a place to keep in mind for future gatherings (OOPS - I didn't say that Rich!) if this next summer isn't a go. With that said...please check out the link and see if this is something you all would like for me to persue. COST: Without having negotiated any group rates yet - 40$ a night each, which includes 3 meals each day and access to all facilites and grounds (pool and waterslide included).
http://www.camp-mishemokwa.com/indexevents.htm
A little birdie has whispered in my ear that a return visit of the MacWilliams is a possibility, so permission for an encampment area is also to be considered. I really hesitate to give much consideration to hotels/motels that don't lend themselves to easy group mixing. NEVERMIND the fact that parking in a parking lot 2 floors and many steps away from a room, with ALL THE GEAR AND GADGETS I lug with me everyday, would get quite tiring (and we all know how we have to manage our fatigue levels!!!).
SO...is a bunkhouse atmosphere something the majority would find fun or is the old tried and true Geneva still the way to go?
I'm leaving Friday, so thanks for your prompt replies to this poll!

GG,
A bunkhouse setting is really no problem for me at all. I still voted for the Geneva, though, because I didn't get a real feel for this place from their website. I like being in Chimney Rock actually. It adds atmosphere, I think. As for the 3 meals each day, I don't think that is beneficial to such a group. We will be out during most of the day? Maybe I just voted for the Geneva, because they have a bar???
All in all though, it doesn't make a real difference to me. I'd be happy and content in any place you choose.

Hi Ilse,
Good Points! Regarding Meals - That's where I think some negotiating on the price might come in, and/or perhaps Michaela could provide bag lunches on the one, possibly two days we could use them. True, there is no bar, and from the holistic atmosphere portrayed on the site - I wondered if libations such as "Ping" and "Shrub" would be welcomed and she assured me that was no problem. And there was no problem with an encampment area. Hard to beat a Tiki Bar though!!!
I'm with you, Ilse! I love Chimney Rock, know where everything is, and would be happy, happy, happy no matter where the masses wanted to stay! And being the gadgeted sort I can load up any MohicanLand-bound vehicle with bug spray and some Clorox clean-up wipes. Have Gadget Will Travel!
To address Karen S. and Kathy W. multi-legged creature concerns from the other bunking inquiry - I recently returned from a weekend in the Geneva cabins on Lake Lure, and have stayed at the Esmeralda Inn in the last year - each time...I encountered BUGS . I'm beginning to think the mountains, or more specifically Chimney Rock' locales, are just a buggy place!

I checked out the website and it doesn't look too bad. But.... my major concern is no air-conditioning. After being in the heat all day I look forward to cooling off in a room. I can't sleep well if it's too hot. So for now, I still go with a motel room. That place has a lot to offer though.

I'm new, but I'm all for BUGS over no A/C! I know what I look like after roughing it for 5 days, and I wouldn't want to put you guys through such an ordeal. My vote is fot the Geneva and the BAR! Cost is still a consideration, but I'm built for comfort. PS - My idea of roughing it is a La Quinta Motor Inn!

This Camp Mishemokwa place reminds me a little to much of Fort Bragg! I started having flashbacks! I would prefer a blanket and an oilcloth.

GG, looks like you've got your work cut out for you, making a decision on this one!
Since I've yet to actually stay at the group lodging location [though I have thought about doing so], my opinion probably should be taken with a grain of salt:
The first two years, at the Bunkhouse directly across from CRP, it seemed, to me [especially in year one], that those who stayed there had added a whole new dimension to their Gathering experience. So, from my perspective, it seems like the group lodging, bunkhouse-style, was a very positive thing. Of course, the Bunkhouse was el-cheapo! What was it, $15 TOTAL? ... for 3 nights?
Which leads me to the question: Is that $40, quoted above, PER person, PER night??? If so, I'd think it way too expensive for the type of accommodation offered, especially considering that, as Ilse points out, the meals - or most of them, anyway - would not be at all necessary.
If the price were right, though ... I'd consider it a very good option ...
All that said, the Tiki Bar at the Geneva ... right there in the grand shadow of THE ROCK ... makes it ideal in many ways. Ok, no phones or clocks ... and lots of bugs [unavoidable here, I'm afraid], but waking up to the sight of Chimney Rock, and returning from a hard day of hiking to the pool & bar ... plus, the availability of the Gathering Place room for raffles & stuff ... I don't know ...
I voted for the known ... The Geneva. BUT, if the price was right, I would switch to the Bat Cave/Gerton bunkhouse-style deal. The addition of bag lunches, on the couple of days they were needed, would be another plus for that.
If it were me ... |

One of my big regrets about not making it to the first two gatherings was missing out on the Bunkhouse experience! Personally, I liked the Geneva, and I never saw any bugs (which is a miracle because I hate the damn things!). I found it clean and very welcoming (which bearing in mind our popularity at Bear Den, was quite refreshing!). And of course, you can't fault the location...to me, that was perfect.
I wouldn't mind where we were, but I think being altogether in a scenic location (rather than a hotel that could be anywhere) is preferable. Rich also makes a very good point, and that is, for most of us...money is a huge consideration.

You guys are making this so easy!! Keep those votes and comments coming though!! One thing we hope to maximize this next year, especially if staying at the Geneva, is coordination of bunkin' buddies if one desires to do so. Last year we really didn't take advantage of the East and West end apartments (and remember the first year, the West Apt. - the nicest one sleeping up to 7, was out due to the owners needing it for lodging after the fire). I also plan on talking to the Chimney Rock Inn (several gatherers have taken advantage of this lodging alternative in the past) and the Four Season Cottages to check their rates and have them available for consideration in case some think they just can't go the Geneva, but want to be close to the group. Both of these are within EASY walking distance of the Geneva!
There are also a couple of places to check out in the Burnsville and Linville area this weekend, and I think Camp Mishemokwa is worth at least layin' eyes on it and seeing how low a group rate we could get, meals and all considered. At least, we will have scoured all the Western NC possibilites just to make sure we aren't missing out on an even better place!

I looked over Mishemokwa's website and agree, not having A/C would definitely stink (no pun intended). Add to that the community showers and the price of $80 a night (for two)... it's not even a close second to the Geneva. I don't particularly have a problem with the semi-primative setting (I encountered much worse while in the Marine Corps), but I know for a fact that my better half would have definite opinions on the matter.
I still vote for the Geneva. Sure... there's no phones or clocks, but that's one of the reasons I enjoy going on vacation. Heck, I have a cell phone and there's alarm on my wris****ch if I really need them. Besides, the people at the Geneva have always been accomodating, there's a pool, the Tikki is awesome, they have meeting rooms for the raffles and such, if the McWilliams' show up (which I hope they do), they have a place for their encampment, and... the atmosphere (Chimney Rock village, CRP, the river behind the Geneva, etc.). I guess everyone know's how I voted.

Hey, GG! I also voted for the Geneva for many of the reasons cited already; but I'm open to new adventures - so whatever you decide, I'm with ya. Have fun treking around CR and surrounding areas. Wish I could join you. Jayne

Since I'm on a budget, I voted for "cheapest", although the bunkhouse sounds fine as long as they allow dogs. Yogi and I did a lot of tent camping when we were staying last June, so rustic doesn't bother me. Just hope the weather's as perfect as it was for the last gathering. Pat

Hey there, GG!
Although I didn't stay at the Geneva last year, that's the accommodation that got my vote. I did have the opportunity to check out the pool area & the Tiki Bar, though - most inviting!
If my husband comes back with me to Mohicanland in June, it's most likely that we will make use of our 22' camper trailer, as we did last year. IF my husband does NOT come along, I might go with the group accommodations. I agree with the idea of maximizing the coordination of "bunkin' buddies" this time around, also. That would make it more affordable for everyone, as opposed to each person renting separate rooms.
