Anybody here somewhere in the area of 3:30 - 5:30 [EDT] yesterday afternoon? Not much going on, was there? It was very weird ... I knew something was going on; actually, I thought we were being hacked ... again. I was updating some files, transfering back & forth ... this was earlier ... and very strange stuff was going on.

  • While editing in the "members ranks" section, the whole format of the table suddenly changed, and there was a woman's picture - I assumed it was one of the avatars, though after what happened next, I'm not sure about that - repeatedly running down one of the table's columns! I clicked, "refresh," and all went back to normal.
  • The two little icons, in the posting area, that represent "add an URL" & "add an e-mail"? Those were replaced by some image I had never seen! I ended up having to upload the images from my back-ups!
  • On the Board's main page, just under the Newsletter sign-up thing, in black, was the message ... generated by the server ... that such & such database fields had been deleted! [they weren't] Again, a simple refresh fixed that.

So, I continued on my way ... doing my little thing ... POOF! All of a sudden, the site was gone! HACKED!!! I KNEW it!!! But, in reality, it wasn't a hacker ... a server hard drive had gone beserk & then bad ... in a couple of hours it was replaced and we were back up. And that's why we were gone, if you tried to visit around that time!

Bad News Department: Mark Baker's Sons of a Trackless Forest has gone through its second print run and will very soon be out of print. At the moment, there are 10 copies left, so if you've been meaning to buy a copy, better act NOW! No guarantees that there'll even be one for you, but ... see: Sons of a Trackless Forest

New On The Board: Several new things are "functional" on the Mohican Board now. You may have noticed some.

Insert in Place - As you post, if you use the Forum Code at all, you may have been mildly annoyed, as I was, that you constantly had to play around with your cursor while inserting code. Most of that is fixed now - in Basic mode. You can highlight specified text, click on the code you want [i.e. bold, italics, etc.] and it surrounds the highlighted text with the appropriate tags. PLUS, and this made me happy, it no longer adds the code only to the end of wherever you are in your post - forcing you to cut & paste if the tag is an after thought. Now, you can place the cursor anywhere in your post, click the tag or smile icon, and that's where your code will appear. Very nice!

Animated Smiles - Speaking of smilies, there are now some animated numbers to choose from!

Private Messages - This functions much like a Hotmail account, only just within the Board. You've got an Outbox & Inbox and can send basic e-mail messages to other members. This is only activated if you are logged on. There's a message center on the main board - again, you'll only see it if you are logged in - down by the Active Users & Statistics section. Plus, there's a Private Message icon displayed in the topic posts & the Members list.

New Rankings - Since there really was no consensus, I kind of mixed it all together. Some Cooper, some Mohicanland. The last rank was borrowed from Huggy. Most everybody lost a star. But, just think of the feeling of redemption you'll experience upon regaining that lost star! These ranks can easily be modified at any time, so suggestions are always taken! [Still no new user field showing in posts - the Gatherings Attended one - but, I'm one step closer!]

Gathering Comments: From the sign-ups, here are some of your thoughts for consideration:

Rich...whoever wrote the following lines....must have been reading my mind!!

As long as I'm going to be destitute, I might as well do it somewhere with nice scenery.

I am almost tempted to use that as the Thought For The Day!!

Really! Cherie' purchased his book for my birthday earlier this month. She asked him to sign it, which he did, but he also wrote a "happy birthday" note too. Nice guy! The book is incredible. I'm glad I got a copy before it runs out.

Glad Cherie did so, Marc. The book's great ...
Though I had hoped Mark Baker would be able to attend GVI (as a guest), & though he had expressed a desire to do so, it looks like he'll be otherwise engaged next June. (Good for him, bad for us ...)
Ah well. Back to the drawing board.

The book is fantastic, and one of my web site-related "treasures" that I've accumulated over the years [along with our DDL letter, our raw interviews on tape, all our Gathering memories & photos, the recently acquired ES pendant, a bill of sale from Forward Pass, etc. etc.]. Ours is one of the first, cloth-bound, copies [#61] personalized & autographed, and on page 319, a watercolor done by Mark [he colorized different drawings in the different numbered copies].

Darn! I wish he could've come ... would have been the perfect touch to a day of colonial-style Mohican Games!
