Okay, I have been thinking about this alot, so I am going to ask. I know that the plan is to hike up Chimney Rock, right? What if the more athletically-challenged people get tired? Do we just wait for y'all to come back down or what? I have been to Chimney Rock before, but it has been so many years ago that I don't remember much about it. I think that somebody said or either I remember something about an elevator that will take you to the top? Is that right? I'm just trying to figure out all of my options. Can you tell that I am in a lazy mood today?

Yes Kay, there is an elevator....it takes you to....THE TRAIL. THEN we hike out to Hickory Nut Falls (the falls seen over the Sachem's shoulder) via the Cliff Trail (this is backwards from what the park recommends BUT we want to get the LOTM experience of it so we go the way it is filmed in the movie) and then hike back via the Skyline Trail - a bit easier in my opinion (not so many UPstairs and LOTS of DOWNstairs). Each year invariably the group starts out relatively close together and then s-p-r-e-a-d-s out as they traverse the trail. The first part of the Cliff trail is the most difficult to me - I can walk for miles and miles if the trail is flat, but have difficulty on steep inclines (LIKE STEPS) and there are a lot of man-made steps at the beginning. But after that, it is just plum fun! I've never sat out though and wouldn't this year if only I could be there that day
There are so many little tidbits to learn on the trail so stay close to ones that have done it the "Mohican-Way" previously and you'll learn lots! PLUS nothing beats lunching beside the cool waters of the falls! You gotta do it at least once with THE CROWD!

Don't worry about Chimney Rock. It's a piece of cake! The Dupont Forest Death March is what will get ya. |

GG, I am the same way. I can walk and walk, but please don't ask me to walk up an incline!!! It sounds like it isn't too bad, so I will make sure to stick with the crowd. Thanks G.G. and Fitz for making me feel better about it.

I feel the same way about inclines, Kaylynn, but it ain't just the wear and tear on my bad ankles (yes, used to be just one, now there's TWO!!!) but also...little Christina has VERTIGO so sometimes going DOWN and UP narrow little inclines gets a little interesting...but Gadget Girl can attest to the fact I've been up and down with her at least four times and never passed out...so... You can do the Chimney Rock hike no problem as long as you have plenty of water and take your time...the rest stop at the falls is really not to be missed... now, about that DuPont forest death march...somewhere in the middle of that long field we walked through I seem to remember having an out of body experience...but that's another story.

Kaylynn - the stairs are pretty rough - there are many of them - but once past that, it really is very easy. Your thighs will feel the pain, though, in the beginning! |

Fitz, I think I prefer the Death March to the Chimney Rock climb. Like Rich said Kay, the first part of Chimney Rock is tough...take your time, rest when needed (believe me we all do that)...whatever you do, don't NOT do it. You'll want to walk in those footsteps believe me! Can't wait! |

Rich, My thighs are already feeling the pain and I haven't walked up the first step yet!!! I guess that it's time to get the stair-stepper out and pretend that I am walking up the many steps at Chimney Rock.

Okay Theresa, but when I tell y'all that I have to rest every five steps, you're gonna want to throw me off of the mountain. I will just remind you that you told me that I couldn't NOT do it.

Christina, Okay, I need to hear all of these stories so that I am prepared for this "death march!!!"
