Mornin’ Everyone!

I have few tidbits regarding the Gathering to pass on.

First of all, the Pig Roast (Pig Pickin’, Pig Pull, whatever you like to call these things) Plans are well under way. A succulent pig and grilled chickens along with all the fixin’s will be supplied EXCEPT for desserts, which we have left open to the wonderful culinary talents of Gatherees. While all types of desserts are certainly welcome, we encourage those of you that have a penchant for colonial fare or cobblers to share your talents with us. Cooking facilitates are few and far between at the Geneva, but the West and East apartments have an oven, stove, and refrigerator. You may not want to wait until Friday night though to sneak a concoction into the fire, because those units will be blazing in preparation for the GAMES the next day. If you plan to contribute, please drop me note so we will know how much space to provide at the games and to help us plan if you will need to use an oven or require fridge space.

For those of you driving…you may want to bring along folding chairs, as “The French Broads” (this is our affectionate term for those WONDERFUL guys we will be guests of, the members of the French Broad Rifle Club – Fitz did I get that correct?) don’t have many sitting areas. If you are able, please consider bringing a few extra, as those flying in I’m sure would appreciate borrowing a spot to take a load off. It will be a long day, so you may want to include a blanket or throw for stretching out on the ground. And don’t forget to pack the sunscreen and bug spray. There are a few areas of shade to escape to and there will some canopies up, but we will all be in the sun (IF it is sunny) at some point during the day. We plan on having the food ready as close to 3 PM as possible, and there will be a few snacks around, but if you think you may be in attack mode by the time the food is done, you might bring some extra snacks for yourself. Drinks will be available on site for purchase, provided by the French Broads, in order for them to make a little money for their organization. This will be great day for all gatherers regardless of whether you plan to participate in any competitions and it will be our final scheduled time together. Lady Ann has planned a spectacular shindig, complete with music, as the culmination of the weeks activities, so everyone please plan on being there for this special day!!

As an extra plea…if any of you have any folding tables (small or large) that could easily be brought along for your trip to MohicanLand, we could use a few extra for Games day. Let me know if you plan to bring one.

Lady Ann…have I forgotten any thing you can think of – care to add anything?

NATHAN WHITNEY – son, I’m out to beat you this year in that Hawk Throw (muttering under her breath….I WAS ROBBED!…little whipper snapper winning my bottle of brandy! Hmmmmphhhh!) No Hail Mary throws for YOU this year!

LODGING – The Geneva has been wonderful to work with this year, and Vicki – the owner, has made it known that she and the girls in the office will be on the look out for any and all loincloth wearers!! She has been most gracious in extending the holding of the room block into May, but as of May 19th – the rooms not reserved open up to the public (Bless their little hearts, they won’t know what hit them if they stay there gathering week, will they?!). She has had many inquiries about this week, so after May 19th, don’t expect there to be any rooms left for long!!! Remember to let me know when you make reservations at the Geneva if you don’t mind! This helps us see where the bulk of folks are and it helps us update the room layout in case folks want to pick a particular spot in the motel. A new update should be available next week sometime. Check the link on the gathering pages. The inquiries about roomies have been either feast or famine. If for some reason any of you have

One folding table, about 24 by 32 inches, coming up (or down, from my perspective). Since I'm bringing a large basket and a framed poster, among other things, I wasn't sure there would be room in my little car for anything else, but my husband assures me the table will fit. He's very good at packing, and it's not as though I'll need suitcases packed with clothes for all types of occasions.

Now about the baking -- Ordinarily the phrase "we need baked goods" evokes in me a response similar to when I hear "we need donations for this poor old dog's surgery" or "the raffle needs help" (translation: go out and buy more colonial stuff, and feel no guilt in doing so because it's for a good cause). I'm pretty good at baking pies and cookies, and love doing so. The problem is where and when to make them. Is there freezer space at the Geneva? If so, I could make a couple pies here and freeze them...oh wait, I'd have to keep them frozen on the way down. Hmmm.... And I could make some cookies here and bring them down in airtight containers, and they would probably be OK for the last day's festivities ... but would my roommates (and, let's be honest, myself) allow them to survive that long? I'll have to give this some more thought....

Regular sized refrigerator with freezer on top in both apartments - CHECK

For any who will bring their own flintlock, please note that the FBR range has a gravel surface in the area used for loading the guns. Now, I am one of those people who will not let the butt my rifle rest on the ground, much less on gravel, so I will bring a small mat to put under the edge of the loading bench. Last time I used the floor mat from my car, but this can be bad if you spill some cleaning solvent or other stuff on it. A rubber mat would be better. And if you bring a hawk, better bring a spare handle and a file to sharpen the blade.

And as long as we are on the subject of games, I as at the French and Indian War Encampment at Fort Toulouse last weekend, and on Sunday they had some interesting games I had not seen before. They had a hawk throw, but at one and one-half rotations. For those of you that don't know, this means that you throw the hawk with the blade to your rear, not your front, and at 9 paces instead of 6. Makes it a little harder. And they had a contest to load and fire a musket three times as fast as possible. Most took about 45 seconds or more, but one French Marine did it in 36 seconds! And they had a sword and bayonet contest. A mellon was suspended from a rope, then swung sideways. The object was to bayonet it while in motion. You got three tries. Then it was repeated with swords. These might be something to consider in the future.

Dang it, Fitz...you're making it really hard for me not to be any sorrier I didn't make that event.

Di, I have a card table I can bring. May need to talk to you about rooming with the "group" the entire time...not sure Claude can make it.

Di --
count on two folding tables and perhaps a card table from me as well. I'll also bring along about six folding chairs and a pile o'blankets for sitting.

See this face? This is the face of a woman on the edge.
