Poll Question:
In the past, we've debated - and polled - on whether to show the 35mm theatrical version or the DVD expanded version. One year we considered showing both. Mute point, really, because though the theater talked of implementing a DVD projection system, it never happened ... until now. The system is in place and I am told that the quality is excellent. Further complicating the issue this year is that Russell Means has asked us to show the DVD-version, as he wishes to speak on the closing scene. One thing to consider in all of this, NOT showing the 35mm version saves us in the neighborhood of $400.
BTW, in the past, the theatrical version has always won out.
So, what to do?

WOW, Rich!
You've put up some tough polls before but this one is made up of some truly tough choices! I'm going to have to think about this a bit before I can actually cast my vote!
I LOVE the original version & greatly miss ALL of the deleted scenes on the DVD version and on the other hand, the quality of the DVD is definitely superior to the original 35mm theatrical format! How's a girl to choose???
Since Russel Means is requesting the DVD version, and has asked to make comments on the closing scene, I think I'm going to lean in the direction of his request - I mean, that was an awesome closing scene & to have the man himself there to speak about it is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity! But I'm still going to think on it some more before I cast my vote! |

Rich, I cast my vote for the DVD version. I believe that we really need to consider Russell's feelings, and it would really help to save that $400.00 and use it towards other needs!!!

Hi Rich, I voted because I wanted to be able to see how people voted, but I am not attending the gathering, so be sure to exclude my vote when you calculate the results. I voted for showing both versions for several reasons. Of course, the first being that you can never get too much LOTM. I believe we need to honor Russell Means' request. However, tacking his final speech onto the end of the theatrical version would interrupt the continuity and ruin its effectiveness. On the other hand, there is a lot to be said for the theatrical version, which is my favorite. If you show the DVD version first, the Means and others who are not particularly interested in seeing the theatrical version could head for home, and those who wanted to could stay. That might also accommodate those people sitting on a waiting list. Just a thought for your consideration. Chris |

Nothing like a consensus of opinion (HaHaHaHaHa) I know, it's early yet!
One question - will it cost MORE to show both?

I voted for showing the DVD version. Not only can we save money and honor Russell's request -- the gracious thing to do, since he's our guest -- but also this is probably the only chance we'll ever have to see the DVD version on the big screen. (And we can always recite the missing lines.) |

Hi All: I'm voting for the DVD. I know Russell wants to really talk about the closing scene. It may be our only chnace to hear him speak to it. And as someone else said, we can probably ALL recite the missing lines. Ros |

Ros! After all this time ... still "Lost in the Wilderness!"
Chris! Shame on you! Of course your vote counts! 'Nuff said on that!
GG! No ... not a penny more ...
We'll keep this poll going another week, or so, then we'll discuss it. To me, we HAVE to show the DVD - in some fashion - No brainer, really. Only decision would be do we show them both, or just the DVD, or the theatrical & then just the closing on the DVD ... there, I eliminated ONE option! |

Before I vote, I thought I would just ask...
If we want to see BOTH versions of LOTM, how will the 'management' of the theatre feel about us wanting to sit through TWO showings of the movie? And... will it cost more for their time, if they have to stay on to run the movie after the DVD? Not that paying extra to see both would bother me but... just trying to consider all the angles. If they were willing to stay open to run both, then... there's no problem, I would/could sit there all night and be happy!
Now... if that WASN'T an option, I thinnnk... I'll plump for the DVD. Remember, I've ALWAYS sided with you in this R - Chingachgook's closing sililoquay is a WINNER, as far as I'm concerned!! And as many others have said, in deference to the guest, it's only polite to try and accede to his preference, if at all possible.
This is the point in the movie where the audience glean the most understanding of the character's personality - where he comes from, who he is and what happens when he goes. Therefore, it's pretty much inevitable that this scene is the one which Russell would most want to talk about. Why invite him to the Gathering, if you don't really want to hear him talk about his feelings on the character - the 'man'? (Rhetorical question - not you personally!) My feeling is that you can't invite the man - and then cut out his best scene!! I say we save that kind of behaviour for the 'cutting floor men'!!
Just MY view...

I agree with Kate, we are inviting Russell to come to the Gathering, after the movie is the best time for him to speak, I love the orignal, but it is getting a bit worn, it would be nice to see the DVD version on the big screen. Just something a little different for those who have been to other Gathering. |

Hi,
If we show the DVD version, we will miss the most important dialog of the entire movie. As everyone knows from the last gathering, it is my motto. Words of wisdom from his father, "Don't try and understand them........" you fill in the rest.

To update, as I see this has been missed.
Based on the theater's input, we've decided to show the 35MM theatrical version, as usual, followed by the last 20 minutes, or so, of the DVD version, so that Russell can address his final soliloquy.
We hope that this is the best of both worlds. Theater will open for us at about 6:15 & we can linger and eat/drink for a spell prior to the showing - all to the LOTM soundtrack, of course! |
