A few weeks ago an acquaintance asked me when it was that I would be going to "that Last of the Mohicans camp." If that's what the Gathering is, it'll be a double first for me -- first Gathering, and first trip to camp. Considering the challenging schedule that Rich has laid out for us, maybe merit badges wouldn't be a bad idea!

Hey Bookworm!!! Welcome to the board - We've been waiting for you!!!!
Regarding the merit badges - YOU HAVE NO IDEA!!!!! AND...if we can induce those MacWilliam Boys into coming, then you can really count on a F&I War era "campsite" experience, complete with stories and tales and yarns like you've never heard, none of which are fueled in the least by mysterious amber liquid! (AHEM.....yeah right!)

Hi, Bookworm!
Welcome to Mohicanland! I do believe you must be the lawyer-lady (waiting to have access to a computer) whom Rich mentioned some time back in one of his Weekly Updates? We're so glad you are able to join us!
I haven't been to a Gathering, but from what I have seen and read here, it is my belief that for some of those hikes and events a Congressional Medal of Honor would be in order!

I'd LOVE to get some merit badges...never had a chance to in my extremely lame Girl Scout troop. All we ever did was pick up trash for "community service" and take one ill-fated semi-camping trip to a local state park where one of the idiot leaders tried to cook inside the tent and nearly asphyxiated everybody! So MERIT BADGES would be great...let me see, Gadget Girl, what should we give them out for? Tomahawk Throwing? Surviving Bataan Death March? Breechclout Lifting? Ping Slinging? This could be a fruitful idea... Christina, the Disgruntled Ex Girl Scout

I think I may still have my Girl Scout handbook and Claude could possibly have his Boy Scout one. We'll look for those and try to figure out the merit badges that could be earned from this Gathering. There's got to be plenty. |

Now, you know Adele was always an excellent award-giver-outer. Adele, ya comin'? Got any ideas to add to meritous gathering acheivements? Adele, you can't imagine the award opportunities the Nolichucky affords!
First gatherer to set their duck free on the river - WITHOUT 'EM! (Rich? Sound familiar?)
Gatherer with the reddest knees (from sunburn)
Gatherer with the bluest duck arms (won by Jane last gathering!)
Gatherer with the most blood trailing behind them (That would be Dane last gathering)
Gatherer that keeps their camera the most dry!
Raft group who first injures their guide so that he has to take the train back to home base.
Gatherer to first get claustrophobic from having to wear their ENTIRE RAFT GEAR SUIT on the bus trip over the mountain -WITHOUT hitting anyone in the head with their paddle!
OHHhhhhhhhhh, the possibilites!!!
AND CHRISTINA...you know I love the idea of getting in on some Ping Slinging - long as it's being slung down throats and not into the air!!!!

That was SUCH a funny image of Rich, in his cut offs, standing on that little boulder in the middle of the "RAGING" river, watching his duck head on down the river (sans occupant).
"Uhhhhhhhh, what do I do now?"
I expected to see his thumb go out any minute. As it was, you did have to "catch a ride" to get to your duck that someone else had snagged for ya, didn't you?

So, where's my merit badge?!?
If I remember correctly, one of the guides downstream caught my duck. I joined a crew in a raft for the last mile, or whatever it was, that we had left. I was waaaay too exhausted to put my thumb out, much less try to catch that darn duck. Too funny. Great day!!
You know what? Jayne, of the severely black & blue arms after that day, has signed up to do it again!!!! What a warrior! Though, I feel it's a safe bet that she'll choose a raft this time down the river!! |

And to think I was only kidding with the merit badges idea! Well, if I had ever had any idea of going out on the river myself (and believe me, I didn't), this thread has convinced me -- I'm going in a raft with a bunch of other people, so that we can all share the blame if something goes wrong!

Well Rich & GG!!
Thanks for the memories...
Actually, I don't recall pain - but I sure looked bad! You're right about the raft, Rich. No duck this time, mainly because I had to work so hard to stay afloat that I missed the scenery. Decided I'd take it easier and enjoy the views this time.
Theresa - I'll have to raid the boxes in storage, blow off the dust from my old GS handbook, and see about those merit badges, too!

Thanks, Kurt, I reached the site with no problem. I had no idea there were so many! There are a few that maybe we should try to earn BEFORE the Gathering -- emergency preparedness, lifesaving, and (I shudder to think) swimming! |

Well, I won't be getting any merit badges that have to do with water. I want to participate in everything EXCEPT the river rafting!!!

Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh..............GG, Theresa, Rich.......uuuhhhhhhhh.......gotta tell you guys something.....can't keep it under my hat any longer....of all the folks in Mohicanland.......uhhhh......I have known Bookworm the longest. She has seen me at my best, probably at or close to my worst, has shared my table and her table, has babysat my kids, has been to the mountain to my cabin with her hubby, Dave, and, in fact, we attended their wedding in Gettysburg. I have helped her carry her hang glider up narrow stairs to her apartment.....yep! This little lady is a daredevil!! I have known Bookworm.....what a perfect name....for nearly 30 years, and was never prouder of anyone than when she decided and announced that she was going to law school, and then did it.......in real style, too.....a "non-traditional" student, as they say. And when Dave came into the picture, he, too, hit the law books and is now a practicing attorney. Mohicanland has a top-drawer new citizen, for sure!
Bookworm...Nancy and the girls say "Hi!", and there is a special note from Jennifer, the Uno queen--"GO, MARE!!" (She'd get impatient when BW took what Jenny felt was too much time making a decision on which card to drop. Damned kid could beat us all at Uno and she was only 5.....) |

Awwww.....gee...don't know what to say.....thanks, Seamus. Yes, Nancy and SEamus and the girls , and I go way back, to when I was lonely, newly divorced, and newly resident in their community, and they opened their home and their hearts to me. For those of you don't know, and many of you probably do, there are no bigger hearts anywhere. They are the classiest family I know. And between their cooking and my baking, we have certainly eaten well! (Not only was I the slowest Uno player, I was also the slowest eater.. . seems like meals always ended with someone saying, "well, when Mare's finally done..." I haven't gotten faster at anything, Jenn!) Seamus has also been a great influence in keeping alive my interest in the 18th century; I doubt if we'd have a Griffing print on our wall or a continuing subscription to Muzzleloader magazine, to mention just two instances. And as for his worst, I don't think I"ve seen it -- can't recall anything that even comes close! Thanks for everything, buddy.
About the hang gliding: I really like heights, and when I was young and without "hostages to fortune," it seemed like a good idea. But I didn't get far before realizing that I didn't have enough upper body strength to make it work (that's why Seamus was carrying the glider up the stairs). I'm older and wiser now, and my husband and my dog need me, and I'll be very careful on the raft, I promise!!! Please don't make me go in one of those little things by myself!!! |
