Well, bad morning ... second attempt at posting [and writing] this!
Remember the game we used to play here? Posting old photographs and then trying to guess who it is? Encore! Encore! Here you go:
Can you guess? And, which one?
Continuing along the lines of last week's State of the "Union", I'd ask you to please read, when you're in the right frame of mind, this: Future of the Gatherings Announcement.
OK? Please, don't try to read between the lines, there's nothing there. I think, if you really mull this over, it's not that bad ... and, it could turn out quite nicely! There are many factors at play here, and I discussed a few, but one thing that really pushed me over was last June's unGathering. It was so very, very nice to just be there! Not have to worry about anything, just enjoy the moment. I would like to experience a Gathering in that manner ... I really would. I hope you can understand my rationale and why I chose just now to blurt it all out. So, please don't be sad - we've got a [hopefully] good one coming up.
Speaking of, two recent posts here on the matter. If you missed 'em: ANNOUNCING...THIS YEAR'S GATHERING GADGET! and One Last Push For Russell Means .... Regarding the latter, things have perked up a little, but I'm still not quite certain we're going to raise enough to cover their airfare. All I can say is God Bless the "Gathering Committee"! PLEASE NOTE: On Day One, Chimney Rock Park, we've moved times up a bit. It is now 8:30-10:30AM at the Pavilion, with breakfast at 8:45AM sharp. The Park opens at 8:30 or we might have moved it up even earlier - count your blessings! This is to better accommodate our afternoon jaunt to Pisgah National Forest to see the locations of The Elk Hunt and Tracking the War Party.
MyDoom is MyPainInTheArse! Department: At least with what I have to work with, setting up filters is causing grief. I think I've got it straightened out now, but ... again, as was the case last week, Thursday & Friday were particularly heavy. Though I didn't resort to deleting entire mailboxes this time, I did do a lot of wholesale deleting and may have missed some good ones, particularly if there was an attachment. Once again, if I haven't responded to you, send 'er again, please. Sorry about this.
E-Mail Of The Week: NONE! I probably deleted it!
Slow Poke Pokin' Along Department: With my clunkity old computer - will be 6 years this August - and my dial-up connection, I may experience this worse than some of you do, but ... relief is on the way! My web host has once again clamped down on bandwidth usage ... in the early morning hours, things are just fine, but by lunch time - EGAD! - excruciatingly slow. I've sweet-talked them into relaxing the restrictions a bit, and it all seemed ok yesterday - though hard to tell because Saturdays are usually a low-bandwidth day. If you're getting frustrated, as I am, bear with us. My web host says:
We are in the middle of a network revamp. The network project we are focused on right now is going to be a radical improvement which will increase speeds by a huge amount and it will be faster than you have ever seen it.
If true, it is scheduled to occur by nightfall on this coming Friday. We'll see. After all, that is Friday the 13th!!! I am looking forward to the change!!
Forgot To Mention Department: Made navigation just a little easier last week. Whether y

That's a toughie Rich. I'm going to go with the obvious and say that the little girl looking off to the side is Lainey because she is much more interested in where the next debate is than having her picture taken.

I'm guessing the little girl top right is Lainey...the one with the mug in her hands. I think she's a coffee drinker these days. |

I "third" that! Even though I have only seen her in pictures, that's my guess too. Top right: Lainey at about 8 years old.
BTW, I am glad that my computers at home and at work are not to blame for the horrible time I was having getting on to and maneuvering around the boards. I suspected it was your host server, Rich. Whew! Hope they get that fixed pronto! |

Congratulations, Kay, Jim, and Gadget Girl! Youse know a Lainey when ya see one! Lainey, at nearly 4 years old and innocent.
The rest of you ... well, what can I say - you win the consolation prize: a 3 day/4 night, all expenses paid, debate with TGAT!!! Yee-haw!
BTW, the one you picked is her older sister, Victoria. Jimbo, Perry [Elaine's brother who served time at the crazy house with us - as an employee!!!], is the young fella to Lainey's right with no shirt on. |

What a surprise to find this photo here ... and even more surprising to read how quickly an identification was made!!! How'd y'all do that?!
Jim, do you remember my sister Georgia? That's her on the horse ... On Sunday morning her 18 year old son [student at NC State], my nephew Joseph, while on a ROTC skiing trip in West Virginia, had a terrible, terrible accident. Skiing the last course before heading back to NC, he crashed into a tree. He suffered head injuries & a broken neck. He was airlifted to Charleston Medical Center - critical condition & no movement in his arms or legs. So, so sad ...
On Sunday, he underwent two surgeries to stop bleeding near his brain & to remove a blood clot. Unconscious & very critical, apparent paralysis, a bruised heart [initial assessment that he had a tear to his aorta proved negative], who knows what else - obviously, the first prayer is for Joseph's survival. [This is an incredibly good kid - works hard to realize his goals & dreams in life.] By Sunday evening it was confirmed he had suffered a broken neck & the prognosis was, assuming he survives, he's facing total paralysis from his neck down.
Monday was very scary ... he's on a rotating bed [to prevent clots] ... bleeding near his brain continued & attempts to stop it did not seem to be working ... his blood pressure kept dropping & wasn't coming back up ... all day it seemed he was going to flatline.
Monday evening ... an incredible turn around! He was talking & very coherent [no memory of his accident], his blood pressure stabilized, the bleeding stopped, his respirations improved, he felt pain!!! And, surgery to remove the splintered bones & insert a metal disc, which was scheduled for late this week [assuming he didn't deteroriate more] was moved up to today.
This morning at 7:00 ... surgery to remove those splinters, insert the disc, & assess the spinal cord damage to make the final prognosis regarding paralysis. [His neck IS broken & his vertebrae IS shattered.]
Do you believe in miracles? Well ... surgery went well. To all of our amazement, despite his obvious paralysis right now [he has no movement in his limbs] & the shattered disc, the doctors saw NO spinal cord injury!!!! I don't know much more beyond this yet, but, whatever happens, knowing he has no obvious spinal cord injury [very surprising to the doctors!] is as good as it could possibly get!

Your poor family has had rather a lot to contend with this last year or so, hasn't it?
Having been through this sort of experience with my brother, my thoughts are with your family - whatever the outcome, and let us all hope that it is a positive one, it's a long road ahead.

The news of your nephew's accident is so sad, but the improvements he's made and the good news of no spinal cord injury is amazing. Thoughts and prayers sent your way. |

Very, very much appreciated!
Regarding the spinal cord; the x-rays taken before surgery showed major damage & it was fully expected the surgery would confirm that. The surgeons said lack of obvious spinal cord injury, especially in light of the shattered & splintered bone all around it, was "unexplainable."
He's having a rough time today, though ... still too much brain swelling, no progress with respirator weaning, fluids in his chest, more lethargic, extreme pain, etc. [All things considered, I guess it's to be expected.]
Yes, Adele .... have had a lot of crises in my family as of late. And as you say, and as you experienced with your brother, a long, long road ahead ...
The staff at CRP have been thoughtful & very caring. Joseph worked there last summer & word got around quickly.
Be well & be SAFE, everyone! |

Will continue to keep Joseph in my prayers!!! A bird's eye view of the spinal cord showing mo injury is promising indeed. I do imagine in even the BEST of circumstances he will have some rough days ahead considering the trauma he experienced. I hope things improve soon so Joseph AND all your family will have less worries as soon as may be!

Lainey, I hope things go as well as possible for your nephew. I'm a firm believer that "What doesn't kill you makes you stronger". It sounds like he was already pretty amazing, I can't imagine what a grounded, well-balanced individual this will transform him into. Hopefully this can also be an opportunity for your family to strengthen its bonds. Good luck in the months/years ahead with this. |

Hi, Lainey,
I will certainly keep Joseph & his family in my thoughts & prayers, along with you & all of the Federici's. I've always heard that "God doesn't give us more than we can bear" but at times it seems as though we can't bear it all, and those times are truly a test of faith. May God be with all of you during this most difficult time. |

Lainey -- prayers and good thoughts going up for Joseph, your sister and your whole family. Sorry another blow has hit your family and I pray that he will come through this with flying colors. Two co-workers at the newspaper have had sons with similar injuries and accidents (one skiing, the other diving) in recent years and yes, it's a long, long road but miracle of miracles, both have come through with flying colors. I'll pray for his recovery and for strength for all of you. Christina |
