Just heard on the news that Bob Keeshan died today. He was better known as Captain Kangaroo to millions of baby-boomer kids (and later ones as well)... myself included. I was 8 years old when he began his TV show and many enjoyable Saturday mornings of my childhood were spent with him.
Thanks, Captain! It was good to know ya'.

Me too, WW. One of those childhood security blankets. I loved it when be brought out that cardboard box with the crayons and scissors and other goodies and made things. Loved that! He will be missed.
"Back in the old days, when I was a child, we sat around the family table at dinner time and exchanged our daily experiences. It wasn't very organized, but everyone was recognized and all the news that had to be told was told by each family member. We listened to each other and the interest was not put on; it was real." ~~~Bob Keeshan

Those were the days ...
I, too, was a big-time Captain Kangaroo fan! Loved the Banana Man!! Anyone remember him? He endlessly pulled out stuff from under his coat ... watermelons, you name it! I wish today's children could be treated to The Captain's-type of magic.
It's a different world, you know? |

Remember that before he was Capt. Kangaroo he was Clarabell the Clown on the Howdy Doody show. It was on for years, and he never said a word until the final show. Then all he said "Goodby kids". |

He wasn't all that old.
Somehow he seemed old to me when I was a kid, but must have been in his late twenties, early thirties.
The Banana Man seems to have slipped my mind.
I came across a rather touching speech he (Keeshan) gave to the Vermont National Education Association's convention a few years ago that shows how serious he was about children's welfare:
“I’ve waited all my life for this!” |

Thanks for that link, Scott. Great story and wonderful speech.
Oh, yeah, Rich... I remember the Banana Man! He was funny, but my favorite "side-kick" on the show was Mr. Greenjeans. I really don't remember why, though. Perhaps it was his farmer get-up. Coveralls, weren't they?
Fitz, I'm not sure if I ever saw the oldest Howdy Doody shows. Keeshan stopped his run as Clarabelle in 1952... I would have been 5 and I'm not sure when we got our first TV. So I probably didn't, unless in reruns in later years.
It's funny, Scott, how little kids always think that even young adults are OLD, even when they are in their twenties. I always thought the Captain was ancient. I think it was because he was a bit portly... and the wig, perhaps. It was only many years later that I found out how young he was when he began his show. |

I know what you mean about all adults seeming old to a kid, but there were plenty of actors the same age and older who didn't seem "old" to me.
I'm not sure if it's all or partly the way he was made up, or if he's just one of those guys who looks old. |

Now you're getting back to my era. I vaguely remember Captain Kangaroo, but I sure remember Howdy Doody and Clarabelle. My kids grew up with Sesame Street and Mr. Rogers. There are some good shows for kids on today, but way too much junk too. Chris |

A truly great loss. I remember watching him as a kid, along with Mister Rogers, I could never thank him enough for all that he had given all of us.

Yes, it's a sad day to see Captain Kangaroo pass away. I used to watch him a lot too. Great show. What was the name of the cartoon character they had? Tom Terrific? Hmmmm, I think so. I know I loved that part of the show too! Donna |

I remember Mr. Moose....and of course the "Banana Man".. he used to make a train and load it with the bananas out of his coat and ride it off stage.. |

Yes, Mr. Moose! I had forgotten!
And didn't the Banana Man make funny little cooing and ahhhh-ing noises as he pulled bananas out of his coat?
My gosh... the things you can pull out of ancient memories! |

I have to admit, Mr. Moose was one of my favorites. I used to laugh so hard when he would tell those jokes and all of those ping pong balls would fall down on the Captain. I also enjoyed Tom Terrific.
