You are as eloquent as ever in your rebuttal on the topic of Celibacy and the Priesthood.Christina is 19 and in college and Cassandra is 8 going into the 3rd grade special education. You know Cassy is adopted. We got her at 3 days old right from the hospital. She alone makes up for the other children we tried to have. She is definitely a hand full and has Shirley and I banging our heads against the wall, but we love her and would be lost without her.I still don't get the 6 degrees.Oh well.Tell Rich that two former S.C.T.A.'s are down by you'all in retirement somewhere in N.C.

Wow! College ... where? And Cassy; yes, I remember when you adopted her & speaking to you on the phone about it. She's quite fortunate to have you & Shirley as you're both loving, patient people. (Even if you do like to beat up on poor, poor patients!)

Hey, Jim~
I rarely, rarely write about my kids but will make an exception for you! Don't hate me for boasting, though, as I think I've got beautiful, intelligent, creative children ... & since you've asked:
~It is Jesse who got married this past October. He's working full time, going to school full time - working hard towards his degree in chemistry (chemical engineer). Very responsible, very motivated, very disciplined! Extremely patient & good natured, has a diplomatic approach to things. 21 yrs old. ~Adam is working for a small construction company & has, thus far, delayed college (to my disappointment). He plans to go, though, & will hopefully do so this January. He's intensely intelligent, has incredible talent for writing, debating, & critical analysis, and ought to do something notable in life. {He wrote an article we have posted on the Against All Odds site when he was 16. Pickett's Charge-} He'll give you a run for your money when debating politics, social issues, ethics. Wears a mental sign; New York or Bust. 19 yrs old. ~Christopher is entering his junior year at the county High School. He works a part-time job with typically full-time hours. Consistently pulls high 90's (all advanced placement classes including Latin) & I expect he will obtain scholarships for a very good college. Has no idea WHAT he wants to pursue yet ... Good kid; very responsible & very personable. 16 yrs old. ~Miriam will be entering her first year in a non-home school class setting in August. She participated in a two week ballet camp in June. A great opportunity for her since the instructors are very reputable & well known in the dance world. (Mel Tomlinson - for anyone familiar with the New York Ballet Company or the Harlem Dance Troupe. First black, male primary dancer to perform at the Met.} She'll be attending a charter school that approaches education in the traditional, classic style - well rounded scholastic academics plus ballet, violin, drama, art, etc. She's thrilled & so am I! LOVES to read. Audrey Hepburn junior ... Very sensitive & very perceptive young lady. 11 1/2 yrs old. ~Elizabeth is entering 5th grade & will continue to be home-schooled, for this year, at least. The 'pixie from Dixie' - first North Carolinian born of ours. She loves to write, read, script little plays, act out dramas, & collect things (buttons, stamps, international coins, shells - you name it!). She looks like Natalie Wood as a child (Susan from Miracle On 34th Street?) Very organized & particular about things. A shy, sweet, smart, creative girl. 9 yrs old. ~ Olivia is angelic. She made her first Holy Communion in May & was so happy about it! Entering third grade (home schooled), she's consistent in her stated intention to be a doctor. Absolutely affectionate & patient, she's got a natural appreciation for most everything. She's the little girl in the Norman Rockwell paintings. Extremely good natured, very sweet little girl. 7 1/2 yrs old. ~Daniel came along on the heels of three sisters, so that ought to give you an idea of his nature. Very artistic & intensely sensitive. He loves to draw & can't wait for Michael to get a bit older (needs his playmate/buddy for all that good boy stuff!). Very *into* animals, dinosaurs, &, lately, miniature soldiers/battles. Looks smashing in his Davy Crockett coonskin hat - A good guy! 5 yrs old. ~Isabella is a bella. She's unbelievably smart & eager to help with everything (a classic 'little momm |

Wow!That's one heck of a family report. You and Rich are really blessed from above.I remember when Jesse played little league and Rich was the manager here in Wingdale. Now Jesse is a married man.Tempus fugit! We remember Miriam when you brought her to Christina's communion party in 1991.Christina is doing well in college. She made the Dean's List this semester and we are very proud of her.She is majoring in the Health Sciences which includes:RN,OT,RT and P.T.She is going for her B.S. and then Graduate School somewhere. She is definitely a human service worker and presently works in Kent Nursing Home in Conn. The older folks just love her but it's a tough job.Christina is a very sensitive person and gets hurt when one of her elderly patients dies on her.You mentioned travel? We will be heading to Virginia the first week of August. My Great-Great Grandfather was wounded at Chancellorville in 1863 with the 134th Volunteer Infantry out of Schoharie County,N.Y.I have his tin type picture with him in his Civil War rags.He got his finger shot off in Goose Creek,Virginia and missed Gettysburg where his outfit took a beating. So I will be paying my repects to him in Chancellorsville then we will be heading to Busch Gardens on the east coast.Shirley is in private care with the elderly which she has been doing for quite some time now.I know you guys are into this mohican stuff.Any Civil War buffs?

To Anth:Thank You for the compliment. You have my respect too for living in NYC and putting up with all that city stuff!I was born in Brooklyn and raised in South Queens not too far from East New York section of Brooklyn.I am a child of the sixties like you and Rich and have great memories of the city back then when we played stickball, stoopball, slapball and called roto rooter on a neighbor who did not need the service..lol.I had my share of troubleeing with a gang of delinquents and not making my parents proud at all.I was constantly in hot water and didn't give a sh--.You stay right here on this board with us nut house vets.Rich and Elaine will never steer you wrong-Me either.I worked with Rich for quite awhile and he was the best fellow to have in a backup situation. You would know he was ready for action when he put his hair back in a ponytail then look out! You guys worked in record world, right? Did you ever run across an album titledlodwyn Pig? I think the year was 1970.Anyway,I'm a country boy now but still sound like a New Yawker.I guess you never lose the lingo.Take it slow in the Big Apple. Peace. P.S. I was in a rock band in the city around 1969-1970 and played a whole bunch of Grand Funk Railroad (you do remember Grand Funk?) over and out.

Now, you know, just like a resume, these things always look better on paper!
Thanks for the affirmation/compliments. VERY much appreciated. I know we're living contra mundi but the world's not particularly a good measure of wisdom or rationality.
Ant (exactly what we call my *baby* brother!), you are right about disoriented youth & the sad state of parenting/home life. There's a hollow confusion where once was love & nurturing, respect & guidance. It's terribly hard to be a parent today; even harder to be young. So much is working against the family. Kids ARE often disoriented, aimless, angry, ill-mannered, & scared witless.
BUT ... there's still great, committed parents in the world (Jim & Shirley among them) and ........ Adele (the Huggy Merchant from London) is the devoted mother of Connor, a sweet little boy whose life is made all the more challenging by his autism. It's hard to fully appreciate how incredibly demanding & overwhelming it must be to raise a child with autism. Adele faces, meets, & tackles those challenges day in & day out - 24/7. She does it with admirable dedication & love. I have great respect for her devotion to, & nurturing of her son. Little moments of pleasure, like sleeping in on a Sunday morning and leisurely reading the newspaper over a cup of coffee & doughnuts, are rare luxuries for her. Taking a quiet walk, window shopping, going to dinner with a friend ... hardly possible for Adele to do as few can assume the responsibility of Connor's care even for a short time. He's going to school in September, which is a great accomplishment for both mother & son! Rather than express the often heard, 'I can't wait 'til school starts & I get some peace!', Adele, despite knowing how good this is for him, frets & worries & doesn't quite want to 'give him up' to the care of others. I'll post a picture of this adorable child tomorrow (have to find it!) & I hope Adele will reply & tell you more (yesh, Adele?).
Jim, congratulations to Christina. She seeks a vocation, not just a job. Civil War buffs? Yes! On this board - & certainly my three oldest sons. Enjoy the trip to Virginia. And do we get to see the tin type of your gg grandfather?
Oh yes, Anthony! Watch this; 1. Jesse 2. Adam 3. Christopher 4. Miriam 5. Elizabeth 6. Olivia 7. Daniel 8. Isabella 9. Michael One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine ... yep! I'm sure!!! Ilse can vouch for this count, by the way, as she's met ALL my kids!

Lainey...you just made me cry...DAMMiiiiiiiiit!!
The thing I always try and remember, is the people I know who are worse off than me, and thanks to connections with the autism community...I know of MANY who don't have it as good as I. That doesn't mean to say we don't all need a little wallow in self-pity from time to time, but, for the most part...we do ok, Connor and me!
Hugzz Lainey, and thanks for such lovely words.
HM
PS...I think I have met all 9 of yours, haven't I? I even met the daughter in law!

Lainey, thank you for telling us the story of your children. I've not had the opportunity to meet them all. I remember at last year's Gathering some of the younger ones came to Chimney Rock and then to the auction. They are absolutely beautiful and very well mannered. You are so right about all things go back to the home and working in a publice school I see everyday the lack of parenting our kids are receiving. Makes me so angry (and sad).
Adele, I had the opportunity to work with a little girl (5th grade, age 10) with autism this past school year. What a delight she was. I would have loved to have known what she was thinking at times. She was very smart when it came to patterns and once you explained to her the work and got her started she could master anything. She also has this wonderful artistic talent. I'm looking forward to working with her again this coming year.

Elaine and Rich,My computer skills are not too swift-but anyway,my brother is the one that does all the scanning, etc. He took the tin type and spruced up old gg grandpa by trimming his hair and beard. He was a little bit more fuzzy in this picture. He copied the original tin type and placed it on the net.Real cool. You can see it at this site:www.axworthy.com/134th/frmphoto.htm Click on Thomas Mann first name on the top left. And gaze at gg grandpops. He looks like my brother Pat who did all the work. This site is close to my heart because my kin folk came from Schoharie County and Thomas'homestead is still there in Fultonham. My cousin lives in it.It goes back to 1850-Indians and all!

Mann, I enjoyed the Civil War photo gallery! I belong to a CW reenacting unit so I love to look at the old photos. One of my ancestors, also named Thomas, was 44 years old when he enlisted, too! That really was quite unusual. Unfortunatly mine didn't make it through the war. Thanks for sending the link to your ancestor's photo. You are lucky to have it. Just one thing, too bad he fought for the bad guys! <ducking> Stephanie :)

Here he is! Adele's son Connor ... isn't he cute?
Adele, I didn't MEAN to make you cry!!! And, yes, you did meet my children but I wasn't quite sure when I posted if you actually MET them all ... or if you saw about 75 kids & simply took my word that SOME were mine!!!
Theresa, thank you. I think I'll bring 'em back next year!
As for the lack of parenting these days ... man, oh man! Very tragic situation. Too many kids just floating about, not sure which way is up & which way is down.

Well, let me see...I met one at Gathering 3...the newest arrival of course! I think I met seven at Gathering 4, although, it may have been six...hmmm...and no, they were definitely all yours, there is no mistaking a Fed....and of course I met 1 more when I gate-crashed his wedding last year!
Having said all of that, there is one wee Fed that for some reason made the biggest impression ...and that would be little Olivia....what a doll!
