Poll Question:
Okay so it's not strictly Mohican-related (yet) but I wanted to see how much interest there would be among the Gatherers in spending some time in Cherokee, NC. We could do a full day, half day, or just one event depending on the level of interest. I am thinking that this might be something a little different (and MUCH less strenuous) for Gathering Veterans.
For those of you unfamiliar with Cherokee, it is a reservation located about an hour west of Asheville. The museum has recently been overhauled and is excellent. The Oconaluftee Village is a walk-through exhibit where you will see tribe members making baskets, canoes, weaving, and other crafts. They also have a replica cabin and a tribal round-house. Overall it is very educational and enjoyable. "Unto These Hills" is a fantastic outdoor drama currently in its 53rd season which depicts the history of the Cherokee from the arrival of Spanish explorers through their removal on the Trail of Tears and beyond. The performance is highlighted by the famous Eagle dance. Personally if I had to pick one thing to see, this would be it! I have seen it many times and it has never failed to move me.
So, all this is very preliminary, but I wanted to see if there was any interest at all, so please take time to fill out the poll.
Please consider that.

Stephanie,

This sounds like a very good outing. As I stated, Claude and I chose to drive through Cherokee on our way home from the Gathering. We both said that we would love to come back someday when we could stop and visit.

And...what do you mean it has no connection to Mohican? Wes Studi is Cherokee isn't he? There ya go!! Six degrees!!

Is this a Pre- or Post-Gathering Option Package you speak of Steph? I've done all the Cherokee "stuff" and loved it!!! Would do it again for sure. I always kind of thought a (Pre-Gathering Option Package B) neat thing to do would be an overnight trek in the gorge lead by Clabert or William Brown OR BOTH ( I promise not to cry "I want my Mommy")!!!! And I promise "NO GADGETS" and....and...and to be in shape enough not to be accused of using oxygen on my hikes! An eastern tribute maybe to The 200 year anniversary of the Lewis and Clark expedition. After reading about the planned celebrations out west, I dreamed that RICH was leading a re-enactment of the expedition, and a few of us were racing to catch up with him (like usual) in our "helicopter"! Quite a re-enactment, huh? Geez!

***And Steph, let me know about the Games this weekend. No Cecelia, but Christina will be there Sunday!

Hey Gadget Girl!
Unfortunately I will not be able to make the Highland games this weekend :( Maybe some day I'll make it there, every year I want to go and never seem to be able to.
About Cherokee, I was thinking of it not so much as pre- or post-Gathering but as an actual part of the Gathering. I thought it might appeal to those who are looking for a less-strenuous option.
Now about these dreams you're having.....

Hi Stephanie! I, for one, would welcome the chance to go to
Cherokee. Especially if my knees are not any better and I still
can't hike a lot!! Jayne and I have made the trip there after the
first 2 Gatherings we attended, but there never seems to be enough
time! I think this would be a great option. Sure did enjoy getting
to spend more time with you this year. How odd that Jules would know
Jim~what a small world it can truly be!! Can't wait to see you again.

Theresa,
I forgot to mention that there is actually a scene from Horseshoe Bend in the drama "Unto These Hills." It depicts the battle and one of the Cherokee ( I think Junaluska) who saves Andrew Jackson's life, an action he later regrets. The actor who has played Andy Jackson the past couple of years is the best I've ever seen, hopefully he'll stick around for next year!

Stephanie,
Stan and I love Cherokee and think the idea is a good one. Certainly worth considering. It would be a less strenuous activity for those of us who need a day of that!

Hey Stephanie! This is really interesting. I believe they do a reenactment of the battle sometime in the fall. I'll keep my eyes open for that because I would like to go down there to see it. It's only about a 40 minute drive from here. Claude and I may just drive down one day soon just for the heck of it. We will definitetly look forward to "Unto These Hills" should it be on the agenda next year. If not, then we can always go on our own at another time. Go with the flow!!

Count me in for Cherokee. I have been to Cherokee 2 times and loved it. Have not attended any of the programs. I went down for one of the anual pow wows. Usually around the July 4th weekend.

On one trip, I hiked up to Mengus (sp?) Falls. "a 1/4 mile straight up" was what a gentleman at the beginning of the hike said. I think he saw my Reubinese figure and was trying to be helpful. Well it took a while but I made it up and more importantly back down. It really was worth the trip.

If Cherokee does end up being an option, might I suggest a drive into Great Smokie Mountain National Park, it is at one end of the reservation. The corn meal that I bought from the grist mill there was wonderful.

Hi Stephanie,
Looks like there is a lot of interest.
I went there the one time just to see "Unto these Hills."
I'd like to go back and see everything else.
Being in a group would make it more enjoyable.
I hope we could do it one way or another.
I'd be willing to go before or after the official
gathering. I know how much work it is for Rich and
Elaine to do as much as they do.
Maybe the other folks who want to go would be
willing to do the same.
