White Halloween?!?!?
As I write this, the Southern Tier of New York is receiving its first snowflakes of the Winter of 2003-2004! Most of you will recall that I love snow... and winter. However. This is just a little too early for this area!
Fortunately, it is very light and is not expected to stick, because I am just not ready for snow yet. I still have flowers blooming!
Yegads!

Oh, dear! I've heard that this winter is supposed to be a repeat of last, and maybe this is the beginning. We almost always have a white Halloween, routinely having to buy costumes large enough to go over snowsuits and boots. Last year we were lucky to have a white Christmas. This year we are still warmer than average and have only had one day of light flurries so far. I'll take your snow flurries and hope for a blizzard to follow! Chris |

I'm hoping for a repeat of the "Great Halloween Blizzard" of 1991(?). We got 33 inches in one night, I had to shovel a path for the trick or treaters, and the pumpkins look extra spooky with wind and snow howling around them. Go Winter!!! |

Yeah, but if that happened here, all the cute little trick-or-treaters would stay home... and I'd be stuck with all of those Reese's Peanut Butter Cups!
Heavens to Murgatroid! How would I ever survive that?
Chris, here's wishing you guys get your regular allotment of snow this year! Gotta keep that Iditarod running smoothly. I, too, have heard that we are going to have a repeat of last year... which means a hard, cold one for us with plenty of snow.
P.S. Do you know anything about the visually-impaired girl from my home state of Oregon who wants to race this year? Have they ruled on whether to allow her to have sighted guides? |

The Iditarod committee ruled that she can have sighted guides on dogsleds, but not snowmachines. She seemed very happy with the ruling, and will compete. It seemed like a good compromise to me. Now we just need to have enough snow to hold the race. Chris |

Oh good! I was afraid that they wouldn't allow her to have any sighted guides at all, but this seems fair. She just needs to make sure her sighted guides are mushers who are as good as she is, because they could sure slow her down.
I will be following this with interest. For anyone who is interested, here is a little information about her:
Rachel Scdoris is 18 years old and is legally blind. This means that she has limited vision but is not totally blind. She has a retinal condition called congenital achromatopsia. Her vision only allows her to vaguely see as far ahead as her lead dog. Scdoris has competed in other sled dog races - including a 536-mile Wyoming race that she completed in 2001 (at the age of 16!).
Her sighted guides, or spotters, use two-way radios to alert her to hazards such as low-hanging tree branches, snares in the dog harnesses or sharp turns in the course.
Rachel is from Oregon where her father breeds, raises and trains sled dogs. I am very impressed with this young lady. You can see her here: www.sleddogrides.com/oregontrail.htm

Wow! No White Halloween here! We're having summer!
As I write this, at nearly midday, it is 70 degrees F. outside. The sun is shining brilliantly. The fall colors are still gorgeous.
You know what this means, don't you? The little urchins will be out in droves! No leftover peanut butter cups for me.
But the fun part will be that we can sit out on the front porch and be part of the activities without freezing our you-know-whats off. Our street is so active that if you try to stay indoors, you just about have to stand at the door because they come one group right after the other.
It's a lot of fun and I really enjoy it, especially when the next door neighbors (who are so close that you can carry on a conversation in normal tones between porches) are out as well.
Happy Halloween, everyone! |

Happy Halloween!!
That's something I do miss down here in NC ... we've yet to have a SINGLE trick-or-treater knock on our door!!! Man, when I was a kid .. !!!! Only in "downtown" Marion do the kids appear.
Beautiful weather - and foliage - here, too! |

Well they started arriving here at about 5:30 pm... and at 7:30 pm we ran out of candy (a big basketful!)and turned off the porch light.
It was a lovely evening, about 20 degrees warmer than the average. The neighbors were all out, and at times it was like watching a parade of costumed kids walking up and down both sides of the street.
I took the opportunity to dress up, which I don't do if the weather is cold and we stay indoors. Being the sweet, motherly person that I am, I don't do scary. I dressed as "Old Mother Hubbard": long skirt, old-fashioned blouse, crocheted shawl pinned with a cameo brooch, mob cap, glasses perched on end of nose, cane, and sat in my Boston rocker. Mandy, our little dog, was out with me to fill in for Mother Hubbard's boneless dog.
We had a great time. Let's see... what shall I be next year?

I'll send you some of mine. They bus kids in here from outside the neighborhood. It's extremely annoying.
Used to love Halloween.

...Anymore, it seems like the more candy you buy, the fewer trick-or-treaters show up. If you don't buy much, zillions come around from parts unknown. Hint for next year: Don't buy any kind of candy that you wouldn't eat yourself. What do you think I do with the industrial-sized bags of Reeses Peanut Butter Cups ?!
I think it was too cold for the kids this year. Highs here (this week, anyway) are in the 40's, lows in the upper 20's.

I'm with you, Rich. I miss the Halloweens of our youth! Living up on a hill in the middle of nowhere, we don't even expect to see any trick or treaters. Cherie, I'll be all those kids came to see your cool decorations! Bet they kept you busy!
