I did it. Donned most of my garb - not all [where do you put all this stuff?] - and "posed" outdoors for the camera.

Disclaimers:

-- I know all the stuff is not worn correctly!!! I need serious help with dressing! Go ahead, embarrass me!!!

-- Sorry that not all the pics came out too clearly. Found the batteries to be just about dead, and Miriam had to really hurry the shots before the camera would shut off.

-- She also failed to get a head to toe shot. Next time.

-- This s--t is hot!

-- My kids think I'm a freak. I could have told them that a long time ago, but now they have seen for themselves!!!

OK, without further ado:

All-in-all, it felt really good! I did not, as I said, wear everything ... I left off the haversack and other things ... hat had to be refitted ... but you do see my powder horn, tomahawk, possibles bag, etc.

OK, Doc ... let 'er rip!

You're looking pretty frontier-like there Richard! A handsome hunka longhunter indeed!
Great pics! Le Longue Canneloni is running the woods folks, and quite the bush loper he's looking like, eh?

Behold! Le Longue Canneloni!!

All RIGHT!!! Woooooooooo!! You look great, Rich!

One thing about it, you already had the hair! I'm curious though: are you going to part with the moustache? From what I've seen, I don't think it is historically accurate. Reenactor friends... is it accurate?? It seems to me that if a longhunter had any facial hair at all, it might be a full beard??

Anyway, Rich, tell your kids that one of the few really neat things about being an adult is that you still have the right to act like a kid at times! Reenacting is nothing more than pretend/make-believe.

Enjoy it!

PS. What does Lainey think?

Thanks, WW!!!! Got a lot to learn. I'll do better when someone is by my side telling me how to dress!

The first thing Tim Cordell said to me after hearing I had received all this stuff was: Lose the 'stache!! I don't know ... perhaps, if I seriously got into re-enacting I would ... but, at the moment, it would appear I'll only be wearing this at the Gathering for a day, or so. My first big event figures to be a Halloween party!!! [*Ducking from the rotten tomatoes I'm being pelted with!*]

For me, maybe. But there are those who would vehemently argue that ... truly, it can be a very educational experience, both for the one participating and for those who watch.

I think she sides with the kids!

All I can say is that I love this stuff - thank you friends & neighbors!

Oh, I absolutely totally agree with you!! My comment about make-believe was definitely not a put-down for reenactors. Heavens! Most of you here already know that I wish I were one!

No, I only meant that as a way of explaining your motives to your younger kids in terms they could understand. (They are most likely not going to identify with the "Love of History" theory! LOL!!)

PS> Perhaps Lainey would feel differently if she had a "striped petticoat", a shift, a gown and a pair of stays!

Hey Rich, welcome to the reenacting life! You might be surprised how much time ya start spending in libraries looking for old obscure books and documents, and five years from now you could be reenacting a completely different persona. And the things you start daydreaming about, completely different than before! Things like actually contemplating trying to hand sew a linen shirt! It's great fun, and ya meet a lot of great people. Any plans to do some trekking?

If'n yer going to an event you could always shave just before and then grow back the 'stache afterwards, I know some guys who do that.

Also, you might find it more convenient to shorten the strap on your horn and wear it higher up against your ribs, especially when traveling through the woods. And ya might want to wear the shooting bag and horn on the same side, the right side if you're right handed. Makes them easier to get at when loading. Just some suggestions.

Thanks for the suggestions, CT! I knew about the powder horn - remember Mark Baker talking of that. It all comes from experience, I guess, and I have zippo! Will keep on working on it.

Well, after picking myself up off the floor since I fell out of my chair here, My My what pics!!! A soft and fuzzy Mentor Man? (Not! If you guys all had a part in working on the Gatherings...he's a slave driver!)(Marion took great pics; let her know.)(Was the fuzzy ones due to her laughing so hard?)

WHAT DO YOU MEAN - where do you put all that stuff??? In your closet, next to the three shirts you own! Oh, wait, maybe if it's hot to wear the new get up and go - it should reside on the porch. But then, the lions, tigers and bears will get it...yeah, I can see you've got a problem with where to put them!

I can just see Lainy's face now.

Seriously, you look great in them (Ha, Ha!!!) (Where is Doc M when you need her?) There will be no doubt this will be unmistakenly a 2004 Gathering as we'll all know by your dress which one it is. Can't wait to see you running up the Chimney Rock trail path in your best new SDL rendition! (Then we can seriously talk about "down time"!)

Jo

To My Dear le Longue Cannelloni,

You, sir, look far more natural and prepared than I did in any photos taken during my first several months reenacting. That first Christmas, wearing what I thought was really cool but in reality was really bad stuff, my folks took photos of me and WOW did I look stupid! I canned EVERYTHING I was wearing for those photos. You are well on your way without having to do that!! Congratulations!!

Looks great Rich! I'm very much looking forward to having another reenactor join our ranks next June. That way there's more of us to get the crazy looks at CRP. It's a lot of fun watching the expressions on people's faces as you walk past them with a rifle taller than some of them. They simply don't know what to think or do. Strangely, most of them just get out of the way... which makes walking on the trails much easier.

BTW, I shaved my 'stache for last year's Gathering and decided to keep it off.

GREAT pictures La Longue Canneloni! Thanks so much for sharing. Hot, huh? Well, I guess it will be even hotter when you wear them on the trails next June. Better get prepared!
