Today's "This Day in History" link brings back vivid memories! Son of Sam's "stomping" grounds were pretty much mine, as well. I was away, traveling out west, for much of his spree, but returned home to find the area in the grips of terror ... literally.
Later on, after he was arrested, one of his victims - and I forget her name now, but she was paralyzed from the waist down & confined to a wheel chair - became a frequent sight at many of the gigs my old band, Cottonwood Sage, would play at, particularly in the Floral Park/Elmont area of New York, just outside the city limits ... a constant reminder of this man's lunacy!
Seems like yesterday ...

I remember some of the guys that I worked with showing me the area where son of sam was held.It was an isolation area behind the solitary confinement section. This section, three years later, would also house Mark David Chapman. They were kept there until deemed competent then shipped back to court. They were never in population from my understanding. |

Zodiac Killer??? YIKES!! I just saw a special about him not too long ago. I always watch A&E's Cold Case Files and American Justice.Pretty scary stuff though and I find it amazing how many sick people walk around in our cities- undiagnosed..We only find out when there is a trail of bodies.. This question is sort of OT but I am wondering if you guys ever heard of the Karla Homolka and Paul Bernardo?? They received plenty publicity for their heinous crimes. |

Wow, that is simply amazing . On the other hand I read in a book about Ms Homolka that things were being kept quiet south of the border about this awful couple.. Karla and Paul are very sick people who should be locked up forever. They kidnapped teenage girls in the 90's,drugged them, raped them and later on killed them and cut up their bodies. The worst of it was that they filmed most of it. Also Karla didn't hesitate to provide her husband with her teenage sister. She had taken some drugs from the veterinarian office she was working at and used way too much of them.. Tammy Homolka died..Karla didn't feel any remorse but once the trial approached she made a deal with the prosecution to testify against Paul.her lawyer then portrayed her as the a battered wife and now she can look forward to be released in 2005.YUCK!!! Truth be told it makes lots of Canadians wish that those two should have been sentenced to death in a US court.. |

I thought that the 'Zodiac Killer', was to have commited a string of homicides during the mid 1960's through 1975 in the San Francisco (CA) area. He just sort of "dropped off the scope", after 1975. Even though the string of expected copycats crawled out from under rocks, the forensic evidence never did match the original actor.

They committed the crimes in the St.Catherines region which is not too far away from the border. I was more or less referring to the harsher justice system in the States as many Canadians don't feel that ours is dealing with hardcore criminals the proper way. The sentences seem to mild. Although Paul and Karla didn't commit their heinous crimes in the US, we'd love to see them punished in a state where the death penalty still exists..

The zodiac killer I'm referring to is Heriberto Seda who is already serving 83 years to life for 3 murders in Queens and 3 attempted murders in Brooklyn. This all took place in the early 90's.He used zodiac signs as his trademark when corresponding with police.I guess he would attack under a certain zodiac sign. |

You know what amazed me beyond belief? It was having some high profile criminal who commited the most heinous, grizzly, beyond belief crime stand right in front of you and act so polite and normal in which you actually like the guy.Believe it or not, these guys gave you less hassle on the unit and complied with the rules very well.It was the little punks who did minor stuff that gave us all the problems. This was when I was in Maximum Security many years ago. |

One of my first jobs in the legal system was acting as in-house counsel to Death Row inmates at Forida State Prison. I found the majority of inmates to be quiet, courteous and very appreciative of services rendered. Daily I would sit across, with no screens, barriers or guards to "protect" me, from men who had committed abominable, hideous crimes...but I never felt like a target, or even a potential target. As Agent Starling said about Dr. Lector, "it would have been rude". On the other hand, I GREATLY feared the guards...they went out of their way to harrass and intimidate legal counsel coming into the prison. One time, coming into the prison complex, I was trapped by guards between the "dog" fence (the narrow run surrounding the prison populated by vicious Alsatians)and an electric fence for about 2 hours while they "checked" my identification (this after coming to the prison daily for nearly a year). As for the daily searches of my person and property, to make sure I wasn't bringing in contraband goods, well let's just say it was an ordeal. It was a relief to finally be in the relatively safe, pleasant company of ax murderers... |

It was a hard job that's for sure.Even before I worked with Rich I was trained in one of the worst places in New York State for the criminally insane. You needed to be tough or leave.Yeah,we had one of those polite guys who chopped up a woman and stored her parts in his refrigerator. He was so nice that they let him go.He was wonderful to all the counselors, etc.Guess what? He chopped up another woman and is back. But at least he's nice to everyone. In high security you can't be a nice guy.I guess I would have been classified as a guard who "harasses".Actually I was broken in to act like a drill sgt.to keep those fellows off balance so to speak. Was I scared? Darn right. But I wouldn't dare show it and let the maniacs detect it. |
