Bill Rooks lost his mother yesterday (23rd) morning. She had been ill for awhile but seemed to be making progress. This was unexpected. I'm sure Bill and Betty know that their Mohican Family will remember them during this time.

Oh, sorry to hear this ...
I don't think Bill frequents this place much anymore, if at all. It might be better for folks who know him to send him an E-mail - or, he may never read it. That's what I did. Try: palongrifles@charter.net
Who is Bill Rooks?
OH! Well, he was a Founding Father of Mohicanland, known around here as the Gnome and/or GnomeDome. Quite the sense of humor. I sort of miss the Old Geezer! Though he didn't attend, he was instrumental in helping to develop the aura that surrounded that first Mohican Gathering long ago. We also sold his Killdeer replica rifles here through the web site for 2 years, or so. I forget exactly, but it seems we sold perhaps 12-15 directly through this web site. At $1757 a pop, a tidy sum. He was also the constant nemesis of one Doctor Mary!!!!
Those were the good old days! |

Thanks Theresa, and Thanks Rich, for your kind private email.
My mother had suffered a stroke on March 18th this year. She was totally flacid on the left side as a result. Moreover, she had been working toward moving out here to be near us when it happened. Between March 18th and April 18th we made four trips back and forth to Pennsylvania, first comforting her and making sure she was getting adquate care, then seeing her and ensuring that she was in a rehab program and encouraging her toward getting well enough to be able to tolerate a flight out here. We drove back, Betty took her to Dulles and got her here on United (wonderful folks, very supportive and helpful as she still needed an assist of two out of her wheelchair each time) and I drove back and met them at Madison airport. She went first into UW rehab and was doing very well. She went to a step down rehab facility at Meriter Health Center and her progress continued. Last Sunday we had her into our home for the day for Mother's Day, made her stuffed lobster, catered to her and loved every minute of it. She had a wonderful time, and was able to use both arms by then, walk some with a walker, and made it a point to go down our 7 stairs on her own when we were going to take her back to Meriter. On Monday, we picked her up and took her to her doctor here in town, then took her to lunch before returning her to Meriter again for rehab. We talked to her on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and she was doing really well. Walking much more, rehabs were going extremely well, and we anticipated that she would be able to move in and live with us in only another week or two. She was really looking forward to that. On one of our trips back to Pennsylvania (our last one we thought)we had arranged for her house to be sold, her furniture moved out here into storage etc in anticipation that someday (we truly believed as did she) she would have her own apartment again. We were talking about all the things we were going to do over the summer with her, and how we so looked forward to having her living with us for holidays coming up this year.
Thursday evening Betty had taken her in some things she had wanted such as her fingernail remover and polish, a 12 pack of diet ginger ale, some munchies etc. She was in very good spirits, had had a wonderfully productive day in rehab therapy, and was very happy and content. We were just about to rearrange the house so that our computer/office room would be her bedroom and bring some of her furniture into the room so it would all be hers and familiar.
Friday morning at 6AM we got a call from her saying she was short of breath and something wasnt quite right. Betty was at work, I called her, she called my mom and questioned her and the nursing staff. ALL vital signs and stats were normal except a little elevated sugar level, but they were about to take her over to the ER just to be sure. Betty got my mother calmed down and assured that we were going to see that she was helped, and was arranging to leave work to go over to see her and get it done. In the meantime the nurses called me and informed me that had called the ambulance and were going to let my mother know. Betty called me and told me she was just going to go out the door. The next call was the nurse telling me that she had gone in to tell my mother the ambulance was on the way, and that she was gone. My question was "where the hell could she have gone? Go find her!" You see, my mother was well enough, and determined enough at that point, to have decided on her own to just get up and go call a cab or something. The nurse told me, no, I didnt understand, she was gone. She was in heaven. When the nurse called Betty to tell her, Betty had the same reaction. "Go find her! She couldnt have gone far! I know she can walk pretty fast with her walker, but she has got to be around there somewhere".
We are shocked, devastated, and completely torn up about th |

Bill, I've already probably left you a message along these lines, but please know I've been thinking of and praying for your mom, you and Betty. I just know your mom, this special and loved woman, is with God and with her beloved family members who have gone before her. She was surrounded by love here on Earth and now is surrounded by the greatest and purest Love of all. I also pray that you and Betty can find some peace in knowing she is with God and that you did your best for her here on Earth. I'm thinking of you daily. Peace, Christina |

Good to know, William, that you do still come by on occasion. Surprised me!
I could get all mushy ... but I won't. God will get you, and your family, through this, old buddy. That's why he made friends. And your Mom - well, she's where we all hope to be some day.
One other thought - that your being here reminded me of [not that I don't sometimes think of it anyway] - and I'll leave this alone: it seems such a darn shame that a group of people who created such magical moments, destroyed many a keyboard with spouting-from-the-mouth coffee, had so much fun without hardly knowing one another, came together in the flesh, in the form of the early Mohican Gatherings, and found they liked each other even more, should now exist as two separate entities. A heartbreaker. |

Bill, you don't know me, but I would just like to add my deepest sympathy for the loss of your dear mother.
I have "heard" a lot about you, and would like to extend my wish that you would consider rejoining "the fray" here on the boards.
Best wishes,
Joyce (also called Wilderness Woman) |
