Let me preface this post by saying that I do not watch this show.
However, it appears that we have a showdown between Ruben (Alabama) and Clay (North Carolina...hey Rich, Steph, and Diana). I don't know how it is in N.C. but here in Alabama it's madness! Ruben is everywhere! He's on the morning, midday, evening, and late night news. He's on the radio. He's in the newspaper. He's at the watercooler. He's in the neighborhood. It's Ruben-mania no matter where you go or who you talk to. I have heard him sing and I must say that he is a very gifted young man. I would like to know if anyone watches this and how he's perceived in your neck of the woods.

RUBIN???? Who's that?
Now the Clay-niacs - as they're called here - are everywhere it seems. Fans carry signs saying "Aiken for Clay" (His last name is Aiken). Word is Clay is Paula Abdul's favorite, and "NO" I haven't a clue as to all this - just read a bit in the paper about the Clay craze yesterday. I knew there was a Raleigh guy in American Idol finals, but have not seen it - perhaps I'll have to see what all the buzz is about.
Hey Theresa - how 'bout Alabama vs. NC - winner sponsors a pitcher of Margaritas at the Tiki Bar in June? Of course, that's if we can still lift a glass after our fling over the cliffs!
Now regarding watching the likes of Survivor - I have to admit..."GUILTY"

The only reason why I know about this stuff is because my wife is addicted to the show.I try to sneak off and head to the computer when it comes on but you know women. All I get is the guilt trip like:"Hey come on in here and join your wife and watch this with me." Oh well,I got interested towards the end and it's real interesting now. Both guys are great even though they "don't" look the part.Anyway, they are gentleman and I hope they don't get swallowed up by the jet set life style.I can't make a choice right now.Like I said, they are both good. |

Don't feel bad, Rich. I probably wouldn't know about it either if it weren't for the "Rubenization" of this state. We are saturated with it....Ruben this, Ruben that, there's Ruben commercials, and even Ruben pep rallies! Gees! Why watch this when I can watch J.A.G.!!
Your little guy (and I DO mean little compared to Ruben) is from Raleigh, I think. |

Ok, Rich. I'm going to take pity on you here and attempt to clue you in... try anyway, because I don't watch it either. However, I do have an 18 year old daughter!
"American Idol" (the title of this thread) is a TV show... a contest, really... in which a number of young singer-hopefuls, who are nobodys, try to make it to the end... and stardom. Picture: "Survivor of The Pop Music World" and you will pretty much have it, except it doesn't take place in a jungle. They perform before 3 judges who can be extremely ruthless.
This season's group has been pared down to the final two: apparently the two young men mentioned above. Next week will be the final contest, and the winner will be chosen.
Last year's winner, a young lady with a very nice voice, has had at least one hit song, that I know of. So it may pay off for her.
Hope this helps.

Well, W.W., I think you pretty much went nutshell on it. The winner receives a recording contract. Let me do some scouting to see if I can find information to post here. Be back in a minute...... |

And now I know! Thanks ...
It rings a bell now ... that's the show with that super obnoxious, Englishman I think he is, guy as one of the judges? Seems he relishes putting folks down ... never saw the show, but have seen him. Once on "The Factor," I believe. |

That's the one, Rich! I think the judge's name is Simon. I'll probably tune in for the last few minutes of the final show to see who wins. Of course, I have to pull for "205 Ruben!" |

Now Theresa...I never heard if you were gonna take me up on that wager above!! Appears even the lawmakers are getting in on the support the home team wagon.
From WRAL website...
Lawmakers are placing bets on their hometown favorites. U.S. Rep. David Price has entered into a friendly wager with Birmingham Congressman Spencer Bachus.. Bachus is putting Alabama barbeque on the line; Price is offering ice cream from Chapel Hill's own Maple View Farm, which has created a special "Croonin' Clay's Carolina Crunch" flavor in his honor.
And no one will complain if you lug some of that Alabama BBQ with you in June to go along with the Margarita pitcher. |

Missed that wager my Dear.
You're on!! I heard a prediction from some dude on Fox News this morning and he says Clay will win. I probably won't watch tonight (is it one or two hours?). I have to watch the season finale of J.A.G. I'll catch the results on the news, though. GO RUBEN! GO RUBEN! GO RUBEN! Tiki Bar here we come....purchase of the Margaritas yet to be determined! |

Simon Cowell... please can you keep him, we dont want him back in the UK haha. The UK version of Pop Idol was incredibly popular and the singer who won, Will Young, has had an amazing success here with sell out tours, number one singles and a hugely popular album. He is a wonderful singer, his voice just gets inside of you and makes you smile, he really knows how to make a song his own and his phraseing and timing are beyond his years. He has sung live on every tv appearance which is something not many established singers can boast of. (he aint half bad looking either). |

Secureman,
That's the take from many of today's commentators. On talk radio this morning, many felt Ruben held back on the final night and didn't perform up to his potential. Oh well...I reckon we'll know tonight. Geees, where' Anthony when you need him? |

Wow,was that close! Ruben looks so tired and worn out.I hope the layed-back easy going Alabama singer will be able to keep up with the quick pace famous life that is now thrusted upon him. Clay seems to take the fast pace life fairly well. Both are good guys. |

Geeeezzzz.... I guess I'm going to have to confess. OK... so I watched it!! Well, I couldn't help it, after listening to you guys going on about it... how wonderful Clay was and how great Ruben was... Geesh!
LOL! Actually, I really enjoyed last night's show, even though they kept the suspense up for a very long time. It was nicely filled with hearing and watching the guys sing. And that was a joy! They are both wonderful! My favorite was Clay. Just personal preference for the type of voice he has. But it would have been horrible to have to choose between the two of them. I was so completely impressed with both the guys... as well as the girl Kimberly Lock, was it? She has a great voice too.
So, I will look forward to watching the last show of next season. I don't think I will allow myself to get hooked for the whole year. Can't take that much of Simon... or the awful singers who think they are the best! |

Well....I have to admit that I watched the last half hour. FOX milked it for as long as they could, didn't they? Both of these guys have a bright future. Clay will be phenomonal on stage, broadway, or something along those lines. He has a lot of personality and energy and a great voice. Ruben is more "Luther Vandross-like" and will probably stick to that style. Our local news went from 9-10 with nothing but Ruben...past and present...with a sprinkling of weather and sports...and even sports had a Ruben flavor because he signed a collegiate scholarship out of high school.
Ruben is extremely shy. I hope he can handle the pace that is ahead of him. He said last night post "American Idol" program he couldn't wait to get home. He said he found a woman from Andalusia, AL that has a restaurant there in California and she made him up some chicken wings and cornbread.
His home church was packed during the show with people from all walks of life. One thing struck me when interviewing his pastor. He said he was, of course, happy for Ruben but that he was so glad to have something positive for Birmingham, Alabama. There was also a lady there, who was white, who said she was happy to have the nation see something like this shown about how our city and state have come together to support him and also to show Birmingham in a different light from what so many often think of the city. It's a shame good things are not so readily reported because there are good things happening here.
Anyway, while I didn't watch this show at all until last night, and I probably won't watch the next one either, it was fun to see a big ol' teddy bear of a guy from "Sweet Home Alabama" have good fortune shine upon him. Good luck, Ruben!
Now, about that pitcher..... |

In a pathetic attempt to up my postings rate; I did watch the middle part of the last show as I was curious as to what this Clay/Rueben thingy was about and I had a ton of laundry to fold. In my one word: boring. Although, I must admit, their way of stretching out the outcome to a winner was impressive. I didn't have too much trouble identifying the Kebler elf as Clay and the NFL linebacker as Rueben. I did figure out Simon, and Paula I knew. The rest are a mystery. I don't think I'd ever watch it again. I do know they do do things differently in North Carolina, and I had heard that Clay was from there, so had to see if he had that accent. Being from there does make one unique. Now, to see if I was ever in Murphy.....let me find my map.

Hey Jo! Good to hear from you. As it happens, Ruben is from my neck of the woods. In fact, he is back in Birmingham this weekend shooting his video for his winning song, "Flying Without Wings". And, like you, I found the show somewhat boring (especially when J.A.G. is on the other channel) and I probably won't watch again. In fact, I didn't watch at all until the final night and only the last half hour at that. It was just real exciting and fun to have someone from here to root for. Now, as for Murphy, N.C., I've never been there but, oddly enough, Eric Rudolph is back in Birmingham, too, awaiting trial. Is it me or do I have a definite N.C./Alabama connection?? |

Hey Di! Thought I would update you on this lawmakers wager. In yesterday's Birmingham News there was this along with a photo:
Alabamians continued to celebrate Ruben Studdard's "American Idol" victory Thursday when runner-up Clay Aiken's congressman made good on his bet with Studdard's man in Washington Spencer Bachus. David Price, D-N.C., delivered enough of the special Croonin' Clay's Carolina Crunch ice cream to feed Bachus and his staff as they dined in from of a "Go Ruben" banner signed by all of the members of Alabama's congressional delegation. The vanilla-based treat with the caramet-Heath Bar-like crunch, came from Maple View Farm in Hillsborough, N.C.
Now, if you'd like to bring any of that along with you when we get together in a couple of weeks, that'd be fine with me. |
